M. Night Shyamalan To Revamp "Tales from the Crypt" for TNT

It will be interesting to see this on TNT. I loved the HBO one.

M. Night Shyamalan is unlocking “Tales from the Crypt.”

A new version of the HBO late-night anthology series will lead a new two-hour block of terror and suspense-themed programming for TNT, which will be curated by the Oscar-nominated writer-director. Plots for “Tales from the Crypt” will be based on William Gaines’s original EC Comics along with new stories.

The block will also feature short and long-form storytelling executive-produced by Shyamalan and his partner at Binding Edge Pictures, Ashwin Rajan.

“This is a new genre for us in our series efforts and a great chance to partner with M. Night Shyamalan, whose blockbuster hit ‘The Visit’ reminded movie audiences and critics this past summer that he truly is a master of horror,” said Sarah Aubrey, TNT’s EVP of original programming. “This two-hour horror block demonstrates not only TNT’s commitment to working with today’s top talents, but also our strategy to stand out in today’s marketplace by challenging the conventional rules of programming and scheduling.”

Shyamalan, who is also an exec producer on the Fox mystery series “Wayward Pines,” which recently received a second season order, said “to be part of such a beloved brand like ‘Tales from the Crypt,’ something I grew up watching, and to also have the chance to push the boundaries of genre television as a whole, is an inspiring opportunity that I can’t wait to dive into,” he said.

“Tales from the Crypt” aired for seven seasons on HBO starting in June 1989. Introduced by a skeletal “crypt keeper” puppet, the series’ late-night timeslot and its position on the dial allowed it to push the violence and sexuality envelopes.

In addition to Shyamalan and Rajan, James D. Stern is executive-producing “Tales from the Crypt” with his company Endgame Entertainment, along with Aloris Entertainment’s John Santilli and Dan McKinnon.

TNT’s new horror block will premiere in fall 2016. Additional series will be added in the coming months.

Well there goes nudity and f-bombs, but at least you can get away with all sorts of gore on basic cable (and broadcast) these days.

I think the first pair of breasts I ever saw was on Tales from the Crypt. My grandma had HBO and let me stay up on Saturday nights to watch the show when I'd stay over. She usually changed the channel if things got too graphic, but sometimes she'd nod off on the couch and I'd get to see it all...

I'm interested but too bad it's on TNT rather than HBO or somewhere where it could get away with more.

Tales was one of my favorite shows and M Night could do a lot with it. Excited.

Would it be too much to complete the seven keys story that was started but never finished with the two movies?

No Crypt Keeper, and it seems like it may be one long drawn out story, as apose to a single story per episode.

Yes. I don't think anyone even realized there were connective properties to the films other than Cryptkeeper appearing.

Well that's weak. I'd prefer the series to stick with single episode stories. It basically sounds like this is going to be American Horror Story only on TNT and using the Tales From the Crypt name. No Crypt Keeper is a big disappointment too if true as that's a huge part of what made the original series. My interest in this is starting to decline.

yeah, fuck that noise. What's the point of making it a season long or whatever single story.

I can deal with the no Cryptkeeper part because of HBO owning that. But I don't like that they are making it like AHS.

TNT officially picks it up for 10 episodes: http://deadline.com/2016/04/tales-fr...ck-1201737850/

Will now premiere in 2017 when they finalize their horror block.

Honestly I'm okay with that. I didn't like the idea of the show coming back with a running arc for the seasons.

I would be fine if the show got resurrected in its previous format. But trying to turn it into American Horror Story....nawwwww

And there's still a chance for it to come back, it was apparently just taking way too long to take shape.
