Best Looking (and Sounding) Current TV Shows ?
After a over 3K upgrade to my home theatre over xmas, i'm really paying more attention as to what tv shows look and sound really good
Yes every tv show is in HD and just about every tv show has a 5.1 audio mix but some of the 5.1 mixes sound like they were done by a college intern.
I know action based shows lend to more dramatic audio mixes but some shows, the producers have just been lazy
What current tv shows do you think look and sound the best ?
We are talking purely about audio and video quality , not the content of the show at all
I think Hawaii Five O is very good, rich vibrant colors and good sound
Marvel Agents of Shield given it's content i think is poor
I think Flash is better than Arrow video and audiowise
but Spartacus series, now that was a masterpiece (ok not a current series)
Obviously Game of Thrones is very good
in terms of sitcoms, 2 broke girls looks very good.

I would definitely recommend Hannibal, the cinematography and sound design are IMO on par with feature films, not to mention it's just a terrific series in it's own right.

Hannibal comes to mind first and foremost, visually it's unique and audio wise it's just fantastic.
House of Cards is shot beautifully.
Game of Thrones was a given.
Fargo has excellent cinematography and audio
American Horror Story generally has solid audio mixes

I was surprised when I looked at the IMDB to see that Hannibal has had some fairly high-profile directors. The episodes of Two Broke Girls I watched look like fairly average static sitcom fare

David Slade and Bryan Fuller are the EPs of the show, I'm sure they're just getting their friends to shoot some of the episodes, Vincenzo Natali has to get paid outside of his DTV movies once in a while heh.

All good suggestions so far.
I'll add 'Sleepy Hollow' to the pile. While the quality of the show's storyline is starting to take a big dip downward the look/feel of the visuals aspect is very cinematic, imo.

I'll add Gotham. The grimy, noirish look they chose works quite well on the small screen. Surprisingly so actually.
Back in the early days of HDTV, the main reason I remember tuning into CSI: Miami was for the rich, vibrant visuals.

Visually, The Blacklist is very good looking (I believe it's shot in 4k).
Audio-wise, I really like Gotham.

If you can find Utopia on Blu-Ray - and that's Utopia the British conspiracy thriller, not the lame Fox reality show - I bet it'd look absolutely amazing. It was shot in (I think) 2.35:1, and the look of the show is really unique: odd camera angles, artsy composition, highly saturated colors. I've never seen a TV show that looked more like an avant guarde film than this. And while I can't say much about the sound mixing, the soundtrack is awesome: kind of minimalist electonica.
Have a look at the trailer here (note: minor spoilers; trailer is a bit over-the-top compared to the actual show).

Your best bet is with premium cable shows that have longer production schedules per episode. Most network fare is shot so quickly that it inevitably affects the A/V quality. Shows like Black Sails, Penny Dreadful, Ray Donovan, Game of Thrones, etc are all on nets like HBO and Starz. They all look and sound much better than average.

Guillermo Navarro has done some great work there as a director on Hannibal.

For overall look and sound though, just go with the two most expensive shows on the air, Game of Thrones and Marco Polo. The former is a far superior show though in terms of acting and writing.

I've also noticed that Hawaii 5-0 looks great in HD. The colors really standout especially in the opening and closing shots.
