It'll need more than 20 games for me to buy it... but if I play it twice, it'll have been used 1 more time than my Vita.

Yes, but that was because the system used cartridges that were designed for arcade systems and could deliver authentic arcade graphics and sounds. I think the Neo Geo was a system that was extremely popular in Japan, but did nothing when it hit North America (kind of like the Turbo-Graphx).
I like these sorts of things, but I don't see myself (or many others) spending $120 on the handheld or $200 on the entire package. The same basic concept could have been accomplished with a Android or iOS app at a fraction of the price.

This looks interesting, but I don't know about that circular control thing on the portable. Is it going to click like the NG Pocket? I think I'd rather have a D-pad.
Also, I noticed that all of the images show the games stretched to widescreen. That can be disabled, right? I guess they couldn't even get 4:3 screens from a supplier now, but even then I don't want the games stretched.

Nice...if I remember correctly, I have a cd with all of the roms for NeoGeo on it around here somewhere. Now if the cd-r hasn't corrupted from age is another question. I guess I'll dig it out, but if I have that....this system might be pretty awesome on my plasma. (and I've missed Baseball Stars, 3 Count Bout and Magician Lord among others)

For a pick up and play baseball game, absolo freaking lutely. Good looking graphics, great playability. One of the last great baseball games before realism shattered everything.

Yep. Growing up I remember a bunch of kids having a Genesis, a bunch having SNES, some having both, but you knew a kid was rich when they had a Neo Geo. $649 at launch.
Interestingly enough, the Neo Geo console had a lifespan longer than both of the other consoles.

I'm guessing that if it's able to play games not on the system itself, they would probably be special protected versions instead of the rips you downloaded somewhere.

Probably so...but we have seen odder things. Just depends on how powerful the system and how free they want to make things (or rather what length they want to go to for copy protection). I'm guessing you are right, but we might get surprised.
