I pre-ordered at Best Buy this weekend. They are giving a 50% trade in bonus this week towards this game.

Re: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim -- November 2011

So this may be a dumb question but I am confused as to why Bethesday would release this on a holiday (Canada)....none of the stores are open on that day so I assume this is different in the US (Veterans Day)? EB games here is having a midnight launch but that is 12:01am Nov 12.....

Guess I need to reverse my requested day off for the 11th....

If one were so inclined, one could take advantage of the Target's b2g1 to get skyrim at a nice discount with said BB promotion.

Re: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim -- November 2011

November 11 is Veteran's Day in the U.S., but I don't think I've ever heard of a store being closed in observation. Pretty much the only holidays that retailers observe (in the sense of not opening) are New Year's Day, Christmas Day, Thanksgiving Day (the U.S. version), and even for those three, more and more stores are staying open on those days.

Re: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim -- November 2011

In my old age (37) I have been more interested in passing time with RPGs. Can I jump straight into Skyrim without having played the previous encarnations of Elder Scrolls?

Probably. There are plenty of people, myself included, who have never played the first two TES games that came out in the 90s.

Re: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim -- November 2011

The TES games are all independent, similar to Zelda games. They take place in the same world but there's no real connection between them in terms of the story.

Re: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim -- November 2011

I started playing with Morrowind, but the games really don't have much to do with one another. It's just fun seeing the mythology get fleshed out with each game, but you can definitely play Skyrim fresh.

Skyrim is not a sequel to Oblivion. Just jump right into Skyrim you won't miss anything

Re: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim -- November 2011

I thought the backstory for Skyrim definitely does tie into Oblivion TES. You can enjoy it on its own but it does have a continuation of some sort for those who enjoyed the previous game.

Oblivion was the first real RPG I ever played, and I put over 100 hours into it. That's probably both the best and worst thing about good RPGs - they take up a lot of time.

Re: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim -- November 2011

yeah, you really need a strategy guide for these games. I have one for oblivion as well as fallout 3. Are there any good deals for guides for this game?

Re: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim -- November 2011

I've found that the online wikis are much more comprehensive and up-to-date than strategy guides for games like this, not to mention easier to search. Guides are strictly for the artwork and collectible factor. (I'm not knocking them -- I bought the guide for Dark Souls a few weeks ago and admire it, but I don't think I used it once for help with the actual game.)

Only problem with the wikis is that it generally takes a few days after release for accurate and thorough info to get posted.

Re: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim -- November 2011

I think the joy of these games is not to use a guide or online wiki...

Re: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim -- November 2011

Ya, I don't use it for my initial playing through generally, but I like being able to go through the artwork and atlases later, it's really more a collectable than anything.

Re: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim -- November 2011

One major advantage of the Wiki is that it will point out where a bug causes problems with a quest, and how you might be able to work around it.
