i have a somewhat older hdtv, its a sony 57 inch, i forget the model number but its this one

anyways i was watching Repo the Genetic Opera last night and noticed that alot of the comic stuff was cropped ont the sides. I was wondering if there is a way to get rid of overscan.

is there a special way to get into the service menu? ive looked for it on my remote but can't really find it.

To get to the service menu, you need to enter a certain string of key presses on your remote. You'll have to Google your TV's model number to find how to enter the service menu (or it may take some digging at AVS Forum). However, be aware that you can mess up your TV if you're not careful when you're in the service menu.

Have you used a calibration DVD like Avia to establish just how bad the overscan is?

no i8 haven't. the overscan is also bad when trying to watch football and in hd when it'll say '1st and 10' the 1 and s are usually cut off.
how would i go about finding the model number? and would the people at the avs board be able to help just based on a crappy cell phone pic?

Before you mess with anything, one of DVD Talk's reviews says that there's nothing wrong with your TV. Lionsgate cropped the transfer.

It'll be written on a label on the back of the TV, as well as the owner's manual.

Can you tell me how you were able to turn it off on your Samsung?

I also have a Samsung DLP and have had the same problem but haven't been able to figure out how to turn it off. Perhaps it would be the same thing on mine.

I have a projection CRT HD Hitachi with pretty bad overscan, but to adjust it you need to actually go inside the unit and mess with some dials and I am too scared to try. But I agree with GHackmann that you should check out that review before messing with anything, even if it's as simple as something in your service menu.

the thing is, i went into the wide zoom mode on my dvd player (where you zoom out and everything is shown) the cropping wasn't there.

I managed to get into the service menu, but i'm too scared to screw with anything. maybe i can get one of my brother's computer nerd friends to fuck with it/.

Just write down the numbers of the settings the way they already are, so if you mess something up you can just change them back.

That sounds like the type that would fry it, esp if they are Windoze nerds. Got any A/V geek friends?

This won't always help. On some of these types of adjustments you can push the circuits beyond t heir limits and blow a fuse or two. It's not really wise to go in there without at least some knowledge or guidance.
