The Dark Knight (Batman Begins 2) Discussion - Part 2

Part 1:
http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread.php?t=473244

Commenting on what chris_sc77 posted:
"MPAA RATING: PG-13 (14A Canada) for intense sequences of action violence, disturbing images and frightening scenes.

RUNNING TIME: 152mins"
That is one long movie! Not complaining, but it is longer than BB (IIRC).

To compare, Superman Returns was 154 minutes.

Would have been cool to see this one just go all out and get an R-rating, but I'm sure the studio didn't want to alienate 13-16 year olds. Maybe an unrated cut on DVD.

Why? For an entirely randomly estimated 98% of his thousands and thousands of comics appearances, Batman has been PG or "PG-13" at the very most. This ain't Saw IV by any means, and no need to turn the Joker into a gory slasher villain when subtlety can be a lot more effective for horror.

BTW, it seems you can get away with quite a bit with a PG-13 and since I highly doubt any f-bombs will be dropped in the movie, the violence can go pretty far...

Seriously. And I think I spent half of that running time trying to get those stupid 3D glasses to work.

Totally fine with 2+ hrs of Batman though. Nolan will treat us right.

Closed for extremely excessive length.
That's what she said.

If this movie is actually that long, then I'm very happy. I can just tell that it's going to be the type of flick that I just don't want to end, for more than one reason.

Sometimes the PG-13 rating can be dreadful (*cough* Live Free or Die Hard *cough*), but Dark Knight is exactly the type of movie that can push the limits of the rating, much like how a lot of movies when the rating was first established could be considered R-rated now.

And I haven't been stoked for a movie this year more than this one. It's starting to rival the Kill Bill films and Sin City and Grindhouse in terms of anticipation for me, and has already eclipsed my Begins anticipation.

What about the comment regarding Bale being too skinny in a promotional picture?

That was the last thing mentioned in the first thread.

152 minutes? I figured it would be over 2 hours, but not THAT long. I wonder if a certain other villain not named The Joker(hint: his action figure was posted in the previous thread) will get a sizable amount of screentime.

I always figured he'd appear in a cameo at the end setting up the 3rd film. But maybe he'll have a more substantial role(ala Venom in Spider-Man 3).

Yeah, I had asked what picture that was being referred to.

As far as the running time goes, hopefully the pace of the movie keeps up. With all the rumors of what they're putting in this movie though, at least they'll be giving it all plenty of time and not packing it into a 90 minute movie like Fantastic Four or X3 or something.

I really hope we just see him at the end as a setup for the next, Joker deserves a whole movie to himself.

Not sure why 152 minutes seems too long, seeing as the first one clocked in at 140 and I don't think that it seemed overly long.

BTW, can't wait!

It was a close-up of the same scene from one of the first official pics... him in the purple shirt.

Yeah, I expected at least 2:20 for running time... Nolan will keep it moving at a good pace too.

Nolan seems to be a pro at keeping the plot moving along while maintaining interesting characters. I usually hate long movies, but the 2.5 hour runtime has me stoked this time around.

The best movies are never long enough and the worst ones are never short enough. Runtime has little effect on how good a movie is, it's all in the pacing.

I totally agree, but I'm almost thinking the Joker was meant to be a recurring character in the series instead of how he was used in Batman '89 (which would be totally cool with me). Unfortunately everything was determined before Heath left us, so who knows how things are going to work now.

I really don't want the Joker to die in this one, but I have doubts anyone will be able to duplicate Heath's performance in any sequels.
