"The Golden Compass" : Any release news?

Can't wait to get my hands on this one. Especially if it'll be a rumored director's cut.

I agree I thought the theatrical cut felt very trunscated, either it was filmed and cut for time or the film got cut during the script writing process.

I'm in for the Blu-ray as a blind buy.

They'd better release a Director's Cut. The original cut was supposedly much closer to the book before New Line hacked it to pieces.

where'd you read that? any idea how long initial rough cuts of the film were, that would also mean alot of SFX shots/scenes that were expensive to film in the first place got scissored, or was it more character exposition related to the human characters?

There's some details here.

Essentially, the film originally followed the structure of the book more closely and apparently had about a half hour's worth of more character and plot development. Some deleted/alternate scenes including some of the deleted ending can be seen here (they were released in the movie's video game tie-in) as a testament to the studio's tampering. Beware of huge spoilers if you're not familiar with the original novel.

Additionally, key moments from the novel's original ending are seen in the film's trailers, but the entire sequence was cut before release to save it for the sequel (which will probably not happen)

fascinating read. Thanks Rizor

hand it to the studio to make mince meat of film... the movie on the whole in theatrical cut, felt like a giant tease for the next film, very unsatisfying I might add...

Grrr. I wanted to see this since I got the books for Christmas (mid-way through Amber Spyglass right now) but it was pretty much out of the theater. If there is a DC on Blu-ray, I'm there. You'd think they'd have at least posted a release date... I mean Cloverfield came out two weeks ago, and that release date has already been announced!

A director's cut would make this movie much interesting. We'll see.

What "key moments" from the novel's ending are seen in the trailers? There are none that I can think of.

None of those are in the U.S. trailers, so I'm not sure what you're talking about, unless you're referring to international trailers?

EDIT: Never mind. I realize now you're talking about the first teasers that were released, not the later full trailers.

some early details from DVDActive:

New Line Home Entertainment has announced a single ($28.98) and 2-disc special edition ($34.99) of The Golden Compass which stars Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman. Each will be available to own from the 29th April. The film itself will be presented in anamorphic widescreen, along with English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround tracks. The full details have yet to be revealed, although the 2-disc will include over 2 and a half hours of extra material that look at the novel and its journey to the screen, production and casting, and featurettes on the armored bears, daemons, and the alethiometer. A Blu-ray release will also be available for $39.98 with all of the 2-disc content, along with a visually enhanced commentary. Stay tuned for more.

My bad. Though a few things still appear in the final trailer from the film's ending.

Spoiler:
- A shot of Daniel Craig in front of the aurora during the finale
- A shot of Lyra shouting with the aurora in the background
- A shot of daemons fighting on a cliff (I don't believe this is in the movie)
- A shot of Mrs. Coulter in the snow losing something (?)

Anyway, it's been officially announced with cover art. Don't see anything about the director's cut though.

Note: this is only the relevant half of the ad to save space and keep the text readable. Click the above link and flip to Page 2 to see the other half, whihc was basically just the movie description

That quote is weird. Doesn't every movie take its place among "films of all time"?

That sheet is only half the ad you guys..

Its supposed to read "THE GOLDEN COMPASS takes it's place among the great fantasy films of all time."
New Line can go fuck themselves for charging people more for the 2-disk than the 1-disk. I might've blind bought this if the 2-disk was the price as the 1-disk. Oh, well it's not like its the first time New Line has done something to screw up this movie.

2-disc sets are always more expensive than their 1-disc counterparts.

Yeah, that's only half the ad. The other half just had the generic plot breakdown and corporate speak so I cut it out to make the pic still readable without being huge. You can see the whole ad by clicking that link and then flipping to page 2
