Just got PS3, hard drive question

I just caved and picked up a PS3. I noticed that the hard drive space used is 10GB. Can I format the drive and save some space? Does anyone know where I can see the actual content of my drive?

Any info is appreciated.

It's the same thing with the 360.....space is reserved for system files, firmware updates....you just deal with it or replace it with a larger HDD.
