Format-neutral for VG: 360 or PS3 games?

Sorry if this has been asked before but I didn't see anything...

I went format-neutral in high-def with the PS3 and 360 add-on. But for games that are available in both formats, which to get? I'm sure RROD is a factor, but what else? I'm assuming price and gameplay are pretty standard.

If you plan to go online, 360.

For any games that are cross-platform, the 360 will get my purchase 100% of the time.

Achievements, bigger online pool to draw from in multiplayer games, and bigger install base to trade game if necessary.

Seeing as it's a personal preference. I go 360. Why?

I like the feel of the controller better.
Online is MUCH better and easier to do.
The achievements are a nice touch.

RROD is not a factor - as there is a good 3 year warranty.

I think when you add a poll, it creates the thread and then once you finish the poll, that is added. So it is possible that someone responded before you finished posting completely.

My feelings exactly. The only PS3 games I own are exclusives, except for Virtua Fighter 5 (which was exclusively on the PS3 until a few days ago).

Thanks, that makes sense. I literally submitted the post and already found a response.

Forgot to mention that I'm a longtime XBox player and like the feel of the controller better so that's probably how I'd lean.

Agreed 100%

While everyone mentions online, friends and achievements first, I'd have to agree that the controller is a big factor. I hate the 10 year fresh Dual Shok layout. Very uncomfortable.

Also agree that RROD is not a factor. Does it suck? Sure, but as evidenced by this poll I have other systems to play during the 360 downtime, including the Wii.

I chose 360 for the same reasons as everyone previous to me.

My girlfriend and I were actually talking about this last night. Her friend bought COD4 for PS3 even though he also has 360. I told her I don't know anybody that would choose to buy a game for PS3 over 360 if they had both systems. Her friend's reasoning was that he only buys games rated 9.0 or higher on 360 because he's afraid his 360 will RROD. First of all, COD4 got high scores, so that already disqualifies one of his reasons. As far as RROD, I feel that if your system is going to RROD, it doesn't matter what game you play.

Unified, easily accessible friends list
Achievements
Better online
Guaranteed that I can use custom soundtracks
DLC more likely (if at all)
Better controller

There would need to be a MAJOR difference between the versions for me to go PS3.

Now, Oblivion:GOTY I might re-buy on the PS3 just to try it out on there.

I was thinking like Michael Corvin, that if you get RROD you can't play XB for a while, but there are other ways to occupy my time, like sleeping and watching DVDs, lol

XBL is superb, I love the 360blog and similar stuff you can get from it. Also, achievements, for me, are one of the biggest draws to games I've seen. As a completionist, nothing gives me more pleasure than getting achievements and trying to get the 1000/1000 or 200/200

If it's a game I'm going to play on-line, then 360 is the way to go. Other than that, I'll usually chose the PS3 version (assuming the game performance on both is the same). I like how light the sixaxis is, and the PS3 starts up quicker so I'm in the game faster.

Nobody's mentioned improved framerates for some crossplatform games (like NCAA football and Madden) on 360, but that's a big reason for me, along with the fact that I hardly know anyone that has a PS3, so online gaming via LIVE is much, much better.

I did buy VF5 on the PS3 because it was cheap and exclusive at the time, but the 360 with online added is tempting. I think I'll in general buy fighting games for the PS3 first because I invested in a PS3 stick, and because my x-arcade works via a PS2 adapter well enough. Other than that, I bought Darkness for the PS3 basically because at the time I desperately wanted to play SOMETHING on it...

360 for all the reasons listed above unless there's some other advantage to the PS3 version. For example, I heard Unreal Tournament III would allow user mods on the PS3, something the 360 would never allow. That, to me, would raise the value of the game immensely, making the PS3 version the one to purchase, even though I'd know more people I could play with on the 360.

once you buy a microphone for the PS3 cant you play in a 'team' on the online games? If everyone agrees to 'play game X at X time on tuesday' then you can all join a game together right? At that point shouldnt the multiplayer experience be the same as the 360?

In theory yes. But it's no where near as user friendly as Live is. As I said above (i think) why should I need to quit the game I am playing to look at my friends list or send someone a message? Especially when the processing of the friends list stuff could easily be handled by one SPU on its own thread.

Last night's update to the PS3 now let's you access the menu without qutting the game, so now that functionality should work.

Should work or does work? I don't see it listed in the release notes.

I don't care about achievements, but the online experience on the 360 is tons better. The controller is better too, mostly, and I never liked the original xbox controllers much (exception: the 360's d-pad sucks ass).

I'd likely get fighting games and the like on the PS3 since the 360's d-pad sucks and it isn't BC with xbox controllers... but if it's an online fighter most of my messageboard gamerfolk are normally on XBL.

And the PS3 d-pad sucks ass for games like Street Fighter, but my SF anniversary stick and other PS1/PS2 hardware work via USB adapter.

Also, I think game resale value is going to be higher on the 360 as well due to its market lead and tendency of dual-formatters to go with the 360 version (as the poll shows).

So I'd almost always chose 360, despite the headache-inducing volume of the system.
