Selleck is a man of principle.

Selleck Rules Out 'Magnum' Movie Cameo
Actor Tom Selleck has ruled out a cameo role in a planned big screen version of his 1980s TV hit Magnum P.I. - because he refuses to trivialize the show. Selleck is against compromising the memory of a television show he is proud to have starred in by appearing in a big-budget movie making fun of it. He says, "I tell you what worries me - because I love Magnum and we have loyal fans - is they take these TV show titles, and they buy them and they spend $100 million on special effects, and then they make fun of them and trivialize it. Then they try and get the actor who used to be in it to do some ridiculous cameo to prove to the audience that it's OK. And I will not do that."

Good for him.
Though, a Magnum movie couldn't possibly be as bad as Miami Vice. Or could it?

I loved Miami Vice. I just hope the Magnum movies takes the serious route.

My old boss looked quite a bit like Magnum, and I haven't seen him around in a while. Maybe he'll be doing it.
Good for Tom. Unfortunately, it probably won't affect any future movies like this being made.

Good for him, I wouldn't appear in the probally going to be a shit movie either. Magnum P.I. was a great show and the movie will probally not be anything like it.
TV shows made into movies have a track record of you know, Sucking. Bewitched, Miami Vice, the dukes of hazzard-all -pretty terrible movies in my opinion althrough MV wasn't as bad as the other 2.
Can't wait to see Selleck on Las Vegas this season who will be replacing Caan, I think he'll do a great job on the show and hopefully attract more viewers to the show so it will stay on the air longer.

For Tom.
I don't mind if a stupid movie is made for an obviously lacking show :::cough:::Knight Rider:::cough::: , but Magnum? One of the few shows from the 80's that still holds up.

I'm not sure how many people know this, but several years back Tom Clancy was all ready to write a script for a MAGNUM PI movie WITH Selleck in it, and Universal nixed it, saying "nobody wants to see a Magnum feature film".
So good for Tom for saying no to appearing in this travesty.

He talked about this with Conan O'Brien a few weeks ago. Not sure why they wouldn't use him as the lead, though.

Matthew McConaughey is the last person I heard.

In January 2007, it was reported that Matthew McConaughey will play Thomas Magnum, Steve Zahn is Rick Wright, Tyrese Gibson is T.C. Calvin, and William H. Macy is Higgins. Many of the fans of the original series do not like the casting, and some fans of the original series would prefer a reunion of the original cast.

I enjoyed Miami Vice, but I applaud him for his decision not to be a part of this movie that could be just as shitty as The Dukes Of Hazzard.

I think the quote from Selleck was taken from that show, because that was exactly word for word what he said on Conan. It was funny cause they brought out the Magnum costume (that Tom endorsed, BTW) and Conan put it on.

Uh, I'm pretty positive he did. I actually have the episode still saved on my TiVo. They talked about how Conan could be his sidekick in the movie too. Selleck actually said he was Number 1 on that poll of who was the best choice to play Magnum. They were joking a lot and then Selleck got a little serious when they mentioned cameos and he said they always do these cameos so that people will see that it's o.k. with the original stars and it trivializes the original show.
