DVD Bonus Features: Lack of screen tests and casting sessions

Is there an unwritten rule in the movie industry that you don't divulge who missed out on roles?

I would love to hear about, or see on DVD, the casting sessions of actors that got and did not get their roles.

Sure, the info occasionally comes out, and I know that generally, big name stars don't have to try out for their roles. But still, there must be thousands of cases where name actors try out for parts and they go to someone else. I think it would be interesting to see this footage.

I'm sure they'd have to pay the actors to use the screen test footage, and depending upon who it is they could demand a lot of money for it. The studios would also risk embarrassing an actor who tried out but didn't get the role.

Anytime my friend. We'll be neighbors soon, so consider it being neighborly. Then I'll egg your house and have my dogs poop on your lawn.

This would have been awesome:

Meet the Parents
Christopher Walken turned down the role of Jack (the father).

And of course, the stupidest role turn down of all time:

Top Gun
Scott Baio confirmed on E! that he actually turned down the part of Maverick.

As far as dvd extras - there's not a lot of those, but the dvd for the original Superman movie has screen tests from a few actresses trying out for Lois Lane. And the Matchstick Men dvd has a pretty thorough making-of where they cover the different actresses trying out for the same part. I'm sure there's more out there - but yeah, not too many.

Glad to help out. That really is a great site and I like how they at least give the appearance of trying to validate the information. It's a great 10 minute time waster, I'm always finding interesting things on it.

I think Stoltz actually owns the negatives and prints.

Keeping in mind that scripts are often (drastically) rewritten when stars come onboard. The "TOp Gun" script might have sucked when Baio turned it down.

True, but I think it is much more likely that the movie would have sucked had Scott stayed on board.

Top Gun had a script that didn't suck?

Although bits and pieces of it were shown during the "Empire of Dreams" documentary, I'd love to see more of those Star Wars screentests.

Lost Season 1 DVD has a very good look into the casting process, it's would've been very interesting to see had Jorge Garcia or Dominic Monaghan been cast to play Sawyer.

I agree, it was fun seeing Michael Angarano audition for the role of young Anakin.

I'd love to see the LOTR footage of the pre-Viggo Aragorn footage.

They'd have to have all the actors sign off on it, which most wouldn't do.

"Hey, you know that movie that we didn't hire you for?"

"Um, yeah"

"Can we use your audition footage on the DVD? You know, to sell more copies of the film we didn't hire you for?"

"Um...no"

Wow, Adam Sandler backed out of the role opposite Cruise in Collateral. Foxx was very good, but I would loved to see Sandler get a shot at that. I don't know if it's worth ruining a good movie, but it certainly would have been interesting...

The Gone With The Wind DVD making-of documentary had some clips of the tests of other actresses for Scarlett O'Hara.

It's interesting to think of the impact on that film if someone else had been used in the lead role.

Isn't that basically true of any film, especially one you love? I just looked at the info at the website posted near the start of this thread about The Breakfast Club and to think of someone else in the role of Bender (funny...now that name makes me think of a certain robot!) just doesn't seem possible. Emilio Estevez apparently tried for Bender, as did Nicholas Cage and John Cusack. I can't picture either of them in that role!

Hell, Rick Moranis was supposedly lined up to be Carl the janitor but backed out of it. I can't think of anyone else in that role besides that guy! I don't even know his name (John Kapelos), but when I see him pop in the film, I always think to myself "It's Carl!" Say, wasn't he in Weird Science along with Anthony Michael Hall (as Dino..."she's into malakas Dino")...yup, according to the IMDB (an infallible source, no doubt!) he was...and also in Sixteen Candles as well.

Anyways, the point was, just picture any film you really love and then try and stick someone else in the roles. Hell, even try to just rearrange the cast around. Harrison Ford as Luke Skywalker! Kenny Baker as C3PO! Madness I say!
