Happy Birthday DVD!!! 10 years ago this month...
Yes, hard to believe but true, DVD's and DVD players made their debut in Japan in November 1996. Arriving in March 1997 in U.S.A., ahh the good ol' days.
So let's take a stroll down memory lane and reminisce about your very first DVD and DVD player you purchased. Also do you still own either of the two?
I myself waited for the dust to settle (tech glitches, prices to fall, studios coming on board, etc.) I finally broke down to the greatness that is the 'DVD' and bought my first player and DVD in the winter of 1998.
Player: Sony DVP-S550D, still own and use (in my home office).
DVD: Casino, still own, haven't double-dipped yet.

Got my first player for Christmas in '99. It was some shitty Zenith that broke in less than a year and was replaced with a Sony DVP-S360D. First DVD was American History X, still have it.

Our family got a player (I forget the type) in early '99. However my dad recieved a free copy of Metropolis randomly a month or so before that. When we got the player, it came with 12 free rentals at Hollywood Video, and 5 free movies (Michael, Jumanji, The Fugitive, Basic Instinct, ?). We still have that player.
My first DVD was The Truman Show, double dipped last spring. Also, when Matrix came out, that was a grand old time, I remember seeing the lobby scene countless times as we showed off the home theater.

First DVD player was the Sony Dvp360. Still my primary player to this day. I got it on May 14, 2000 (same day I joined the forums), along with The Sixth Sense.

I got my first player May of 99. A Sony DVP-S550D bought at Circuit City (which I still own and works great as a back-up player!). I wanted a DVD Player since the moment I saw one in action at the Virgin Megastore in Burbank in 97 but wanted to wait and make sure the format stuck around. After two years and more commercials saying "Also available on DVD," I decided to finally jump in. My first DVD was A Bug's Life. By the end of that month, I had 15 DVDs
My addiction is still strong.

I bought a Toshiba player in 97 when there was only like 10 models to choose from. I paid $400 for it. I bought Boogie Nights a few days before I bought the player. This is when Best Buy had a small section of dvds on one side of a shelf.

My first DVD player was a Playstation 2 I got in 2001. Still works fine... I'm about to fire up RE 4 in a few minutes! I believe my first DVD was Contact, though I'm not 100% sure. Yes, I still own and watch it.

I bought my first player (a Panasonic A300 for $750) in March of 1997, and drove 200 miles (each way) to buy my first batch of 6 DVDs, including Batman, The Fugitive, The Mask, Space Jam, Twister and The Wizard of Oz.
Ironically, all but one of those titles have been replaced by newer, better versions over the years.

Pioneer DV500 on March 28 1997 - and no, I don't have it anymore. It was probably the worst of the first run of players. $698 with sales tax and the extended warranty... which was a good purchase since it died completely a few months later and they had to swap it out. It got replaced with a DVL-909 which was a real workhorse of a player and lasted me until earlier this year.
I wound up replacing our TV the next day as well, since ours only had RF inputs and unlike laserdisc I couldn't just run it through the VCR. The joys of Macrovision.
I still do have both discs I bought at the same time - The Fugitive and Mortal Kombat.
I spent several minutes turning the Fugitive over and nearly took it back as defective because I couldn't figure out why the side labeled "widescreen" didn't play letterboxed. Eventually I figured out that I needed to tell the player that I didn't have a widescreen TV. I still think it was dreadfully optimistic of pioneer to make that the default setting.

oddly enough I saw a "death of VHS obiturary" story on one of the news networks today...they printed it somewhere, but I don't see it on the net.
my first player was an open box special at Best Buy in January 2000. I took some of my student loan money and picked it up for right around a hundred bucks. I also bought the Matrix, and The Shining that day. Over a year later I sold this to another person in my dorm for a crisp 100 bill.
The Oritron DVD-100

Notice the fake row of buttons. Oddly enough I bought 2 of these players a few years later for Xmas gifts under the new name "Questar". This has been my parents only dvd player and has served them well for 5 years. My older sister still uses hers in the kids room, but has upgraded.

Player: Toshiba SD-2109, bought some time in 1998, I can't really remember. I still have it to this day, and ironically, it plays all the shitty DVD-18's that my newer player freezes on. I have never put anything in it that wouldn't play.
I vaguely remember seeing DVD and DIVX side by side at Circuit City and thinking "who the hell would buy something that you then have to pay to watch?", so I went with DVD. My first one was Event Horizon, which I only recently upgraded to the 2 disc set.

My first player was an Apex AD-1200, one of those $50 jobs from Circuit City. 4 years later, it's still working fine.
First day I had the player I bought Jason X, Insomnia, Scream, National Lampoon's Van Wilder and Clerks.

I bought a Toshiba Player in March '98 for $649.00! That was still of the days when Divx was a threat to DVD, so I was taking a risk not buying a Divx player.
My first titles were Lethal Weapon, The Doors, and Dumb & Dumber, and had no idea what Anamorphic meant either. There was nothing better for the first 5 years of going on DVD webpages everyday and reading some new release of a classic movie on DVD for the first time. The good ol' days.

My first player was a Pioneer 5-disc changer.
Can't distinctly remember my first DVD.... might've been Poltergeist.

Bought my first DVD player in June 2000, replaced it in October 2003 wih a Philips 747 (for its multi-region capabilities) and that player is still going strong despite 20-40 hours a week of use.
My first DVD purchase was actually a few weeks before getting the player, and was for 3 titles (total cost about $24.00): Millenium, Ladyhawke, Capricorn One.
I didn't find DVD TALK until January 2001, and this place has definitely helped me save a lot of money and go broke at the same time!

My first player was bought in 1999 I think and it was an RCA player. Lasted about 6 months. Then I moved to the Toshiba 1200 which was a great great player. One of the options I love about Toshibas is you can turn off the time display on the front. But I don't have it anymore.
Rush Hour was the first movie I bought. I still have it.

I got my first player as soon as they launched here. It was an RCA if I recall and cost about 400.00. The store I went to first was out of stock so I bought my first 5 titles there before we headed off to the next location to pick up the actual player. My first 4 DVDs were, Grumpy Old Men, Grumpier Old Men, Spawn and My Best Friend's Wedding. I still own all of those. The player Was sold two years later to my boss. I used the hell out of the player and was able to sell it for almost 3/4 what I paid for it two years earlier.

I got my first DVD player in 2000 I think. I know it was in February, as it was a birthday present. I'm pretty sure my first DVD was Mallrats, although I might have gotten that before I even had a DVD player, as we had a DVD-ROM on our computer that we got in I think 1999. That player died on me a couple years ago, but I still have the Mallrats DVD, even though I also have the 10th Anniversary one.
Oh, and the player was a Toshiba, as was my second one. I sold the second and replaced it with my HTPC that I built.

Bought my first three DVD's at The Wiz on 3/24/1997, Glimmer Man, A Time To Kill and Space Jam. No players were available till a few weeks later when I picked up a Toshiba 2006 (or some model # along those lines) for $700. Brought it back the next day, since it didn't have an optical output and picked up the RCA 5200 for around the same price, which I still have somewhere in storage. Can't believe it's almost ten years already.
