Forbidden Planet SE - Nov. 14

I have a noticeable gap in my DVD collection; my favourite SF film "Forbidden Planet". The reason I haven't bought it, is, because I'm sure I read last year, that a SE release was due in 2006.

I can not find any mention of this at all now. Does anyone know anything about it?

Thanks

Based on the recent WB chat at Home Theater Forum, this is on target for an R1 release on October 3, 2006 - a 2-disc edition. I think specific extras have yet to be announced.

and a two disc SE has already been announced for 10.03.06

You really don't want to do that. It's awful.

You've waited this long so a few more months isn't bad. Just remember that good things come to those who wait.

FrankXS at HTF says

USA Today had a short snippet in Life section that Warners would release two different versions of Forbidden Planet, one for about $28 the other for about $60. This will be mid-November.

A $60 version would obviously have to come with some nice extras to justify the added cost. Hopefully it will be something like a Robby the robot action figure/statute/etc. A reprint of the original poster would be good too (similar to the King Kong tin).

Oh, wwwwwwwwwwwow. Going to have to stock up on frames. If only "This Island Earth" could have gotten the same treatment.

Forbidden Planet will be released by Warner Bros. Nov. 14 in two DVD editions to mark its 50th anniversary. The two-disc special edition ($27) includes the restored film, three documentaries and other programs featuring Robby the Robot. A collector's edition ($60) comes with a Robby action figure and lobby cards.

Wow that collector's edition look awesome, one of a few collector's sets I might be interested in buying.

I hope they got Leslie Nielsen to do some commentary/interviews, it'll be interesting to hear what he thought on one of his few dramatic roles.

Actually Leslie Nielsen was known mostly for dramatic roles on TV and in movies before Airplane! which revealed his talent for deadpan comedy. Not that there weren't any comedy roles, but they weren't what he was known for. Same thing for Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, and Robert Stack in Airplane! - the funny part playing their serious, tough-guy types for laughs and were in on the joke.

I've always heard this film needed MAJOR restoration. Anyone know if Warners ponied up and spent some money on this? MGM could never get the OAR correct and the picture was very faded. Here's hoping for the best.

given the fact that Warner just released a spectacular DVD edition of MGM's 'Grand Prix' there is hope...
