Burnout: Revenge = Awesome!

Kinda surprised no threads on this one yet. Got my copy earlier today and only had a chance to play it for 20 minutes or so.

I told myself after the last Burnout that I would wait til the price lowered but after playing the demo I had to pick it up...and I am glad I did.

Everything seems to have been improved in my little bit of playtime so far. The graphics are excellent and the new gameplay of smashing into traffic is a great improvement.

I haven't taken it on LIVE yet so I don't know how that is. Hopefully they enhanced the lobby since the last one. I also haven't been able to get very deep into the single player mode but it appears they have made many changes on advancing & unlocking stuff.

By the way...the 5.1 DD is smoking so crank it up loud. Lots of fun!

For some reason they decided to make selecting new races and seeing which races you have unlocked overly cumbersome. Overall I am enjoying it though.

... and I'll be damned if the Burning Lap races don't get tough real quick.

Yeah it does seem a little cluttered all the different things to do. But I am very happy so far.

I'll definitely be getting this one... hopefully the difficulty curve has been tweaked to be a bit fairer.

On Burnout 3, it seemed like most of the races were relatively easy until the last 20 or so. The last 5 or so are insane. Haven't been able to beat them after entire weekends of playing.

I'm hesitant about the changes after reading IGNs review. Where's the challenge if you can't wreck into the car in front of you? I guess I would have to play it, but it definitely doesn't sound as challenging.

I can't say I'm digging the whole "traffic-checking" thing. The challenges where you have 20 seconds and time gets added when you check cars is pretty fun, but it seems kind of stupid in regular races or road rage events. Other than that, I too could do without the cumbersome menus, but the game overall is great. It definitely doesn't feel like it's as revolutionary as 3 was, but I'm loving it so far anyway.

Yeah, Burnout Revenge is GREAT. The traffic checking is ok..not the best, but not bad either. Fun fun game. Also picked up the PSP version....GREAT (posted a mini-review in the PSP thread)

i agree the menus are confusing, the traffic check thing i love, plus its so cool to see a car shoot forward and do a "Micheal Bay" car flip (liek what you see in Bad Boys 2)

I agree. After playing it at E3, and then giving it another chance on
the demo they released a bit back I found it lacking when compared
with part 3. Are there any modes in the full version that make it play
more like before?

I spent more time with it last night. Seems challenging to me just in different ways. Yes you can hit the traffic in front of you but 18 Wheelers, Buses & oncoming traffic cannot be "checked". Its fun smashing into the traffic in front of you and sending them into other cars you are racing. It also makes the game a little easier I guess just riding in the right lane...but who does that? It also slows you down to check the traffic so it will hinder you in time trials, which puts you back to avoiding all traffic as usual. But it is definitely refreshing to not have to go thru a crash screen & then the resetting of a car everytime you hit any car like the games in the past.

The menus are a little cumbersome at first but once you get used to them, they are no problem. I know exactly how to get where I wanted to go if I wanted to check what I had done on past tracks. I do think there should be a replay option no matter what your score is on every track though.

I also wish that there was more camera control on the "crash" sections. It appears they got rid of the custom soundtracks option that the last one had (I remember many people complaining about it crashing their games). The music on the game is pretty good & they got rid of that anoying DJ talking to you in the beginning & middle of races thank god.

A change I really like: on the last game, if you smashed someone into a brick wall & you were heading that way as well, you would crash as well. As long as you smash them first, they set you back on the track unharmed. I definitely prefer this as it speeds the game up & saves your life quite a bit with a game as fast paced as this is.

The optional fast starts on the crash modes is a nice touch but stalling out or exploding your engine can be a bitch. I also like that they have given various short cuts thru the tracks, many which are pretty long (short cuts that is). They help keep the tracks a little fresher & seem to give you a little better time on time trials.

Speaking of time trials...guess they decided not to lighten up on them. Once again you have to have the perfect run using boost all the way to even attempt for gold. I was hoping they would ease up on those a little since they could be the most frustrating part on the last Burnout.

Haven't picked the game up yet, but I've got a quickie question...

Can you configure the controls? I found it pretty uncomfortable to move my thumb up to hit the brake button in the demo, and would rather have had the brake and gas switched, or even have the option of putting the brake on one of the shoulder buttons.

I played the demo (awesome!), but my friend picked up the official release on Tuesday. We usually hang out on Sundays...sounds like fun, though!

Does it still have the rubber band gameplay? That's what I hated about part 3.

I too wanted them to lighten up on the time trials because a few of those in the last game I still have not finished (like 97%).

time trials are pretty easy this time...after about 15 of them, i'd say I got gold on over 1/2 on the first try...and always at least a silver. It's a great game but I'm already pretty much done with it..just unlocked level 10 a few mins ago. Oh, and to fix a previous post, yes there are custom soundtracks.

This must be the first thread in history to have the word "cumbersome" three times.

I've found a few time trials where even that isn't enough (perfect run with boost all the way). It seems that hitting the right shortcuts are key now as well.

Yeah, shortcuts are a must for some of the time trials. And they can be a cumbersome bitch Some shortcuts are not shortcuts at all. Just obstacle courses where you crash your car into a wall or dumpster. Game is great, just like 3, but I find the grittyness of the levels to be a hinderance. There's been plenty of times when I crash right into a wall because the wall looked like the street.

This time they made the time trials pretty difficult right off the bat instead of gradually getting harder. They're not impossible, but it'll probably take more than a few tries to get gold.

Crash modes are kinda cool because of the quick start, and when you fly off a ramp it goes into a turbulence type mode. I miss the bonus point icons though.

Jesus, my thumb hurts. Pressing the damn A button the entire time of a playing session for constant boost can really wear on you. I also had to switch back to "The Duke" to play this game. My hands start to cramp with the "S" for most racing games...especially this one.

Anyone else have pain in the thumb?

Yeah, that and pain in the other fingers from keeping the trigger pressed in, mostly.

Yeah. I'm seriously worried about messing up the X button on my PSP from constantly holding it down while playing Burnout Legends. A new controller I can always buy, but a new PSP would really hurt.
