DVD Player w/Built in Decoder ?
I am a newbie to this site. Trying to reconfigure a low end home theater system which goes back a few years. I have an apex ad-800 dvd player w/built in Dolby Digital and Dts decoder. If I hook this up to a receiver that only has 5.1 DD & Dolby Pro Logic capabilites, can I play a newer dts DVD and get full range surround sound w/o the dts processor?
Any help would be great! Not much around in the way of forums for the Apex player I have. Can't even find a .pdf of the manual!

There are two ways to get DTS sound, it doesnt sound like your receiver will do either of them.
1. Send a digital signal from DVD to Receiver via optical or digital coax cable. Receiver MUST support DTS decoding.
2. Send a decoded from the DVD player a 5.1 analog signal via 5.1 analog outputs to 5.1 analog inputs on receiver. I doubt your Apex or your receiver support 5.1 analog, these connections are typically found on higher end SACD/DVD-Audio players and newer Receivers.

If the player has decoders, odds are good it has the 6-channel analog output. But check the receiver, it's usually called Multichannel Input. If you have these, you can play DTS with your current equipment. If not, you can't.

And 6-channel inputs on receivers have been around since the beginning of HT; "Dolby Digital Ready" receivers with analog inputs were widely available for some time even before DVD players were introduced, and it was common for players to have their own decoders and analog outputs specifically because most people didn't have receivers with decoders yet.
