Help 5.1 system: I'm confused

Hi there, first post.

I bought this system. Earthquake's Nova 51.

It has it's own built in amp, on the woofer box itself. I notice it has 6 RCA style imputs, but no digital input.

I'm guessing I need to buy a DVD player which has 6 rca audio channels out? Does anyone know of some which don't break the bank? Also, is there a cable I can buy, (Digital to Analogue Converter (DAC) to convert Optical (digital) to 5.1 Analogue with RCA connectors) or something I can use to convert the optical signal, to a analog one?

Here is a pic of what I'm talking about, what the input looks like on the 5.1 system.

Oh well, I just got a Toshiba SD-4960 DVD player. It was $75 shipped, under my $100 price point for a DVD player.

No, it can be used for DVD-A, but it is not limited to that. It can also be used for a 5.1 track.

That's a great price on a very versatile player (I have a better opinion of Toshiba plays\ers than some other people do, however). It will work as you expect, using its internal DTS/Dolby Digital/DVD-A/SACD decoders to send multichannel analog audio to the 6-channel input on your subwoofer/amplifier. You should be able to set up the bass management parameters, speaker delay, and other decoder settings on the player, and then use the Nova's remote to adjust overall level.

The only potential regret you may have (other than mediocre sound quality) is the lack of additional inputs on the amp. Unless I'm missing something, the 6-channel input is the only input it has, so you'll have to purchase external switching if you want to connect TV, VCR, cable box, satellite, computer, etc. to the unit.

It's used mainly for DVDA and SACD, but I guess you could use it for 5.1 tracks. anyways, unless you plan on listening to DVDA and SACD, you don't need it.

Yes, he does. There is no digital audio input on the powered 5.1 speaker system in question.

This isn't really a "system"; it's a speaker package that happens to have a built-in amp. It's best not to use it as your receiver (or at all, for that matter. Depending on what you paid, you probably could have gotten the entry level Onkyo 6.1 for not much more). Since you are using it, though, you will lose some sound quality in the resulting downconversion, although it's probably negligible with that set-up. Honestly though, I'd look into returning it (if you're able to) and spending a bit more for something that will better serve your needs (especially if you ever plan on adding additional equipment like a cable box or video game console).

If you're sticking with just DVDs, this may work out for you, but you're severly limiting yourself by using the amp as your receiver.

What downconversion? It may be a low-end set of speakers, but so are others in the same price range.
