12 Monkeys SE - 5/10/05

This sounds just like the previous release. Only Universal...

http://www.dvdanswers.com/index.php?...5749&n=1&burl=

Universal has announced a re-release of the 12 Monkeys special edition which stars Bruce Willis, Brad Pitt and Madeline Stowe. The disc will be available to own from the 10th May this year, and should set you back somewhere in the region of around $14.98. The film itself will be presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen along with both English and French Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks. DVD extras will include an audio commentary with Director Terry Gilliam and Producer Charles Roven, a making of feature entitled The Hamster Factor and Other Tales of 12 Monkeys, a feature entitled 12 Monkeys Archives, production notes and the films theatrical trailer.

Didn't the previous version have a DTS track?

There were two versions: one with DTS and one without. The one with DTS didn't have the supplements, though.

The original version had a solo commentary from Terry Gilliam, and the "12 Monkeys Archives" feature is new...maybe it's a featurette made up of the deleted scenes that we've been hearing about for years.

No, the original version had a commentary by Terry Gilliam and Charles Roven.

And the "12 Monkeys Archives" are actually listed on the insert of the original version but they are not on the actual DVD.

I as well, I need to pick up some of his other films too, just wish Criterion's weren't so expensive.

I have to question (once again) the logic over at Universal...

Take a movie that has been in-print since pretty much the dawn of DVD. Take it out of print very briefly... not enough time for any sort of real demand to build up (you can still find this for 8 or 10 bucks all over eBay, etc.) Then reissue it right away, with the same features, for a dirt cheap MSRP.

How, exactly, does this make any sense?

Thanks for the news though.

If they put the documentary (90 minutes) on a second disc, use a higher bitrate for the movie and keep the entire audio commentary (instead of cutting it off like on the original) I'll double-dip.

I could not agree with you more. And they don't even try to "fool" us with a 2 disc or some meaningless extra to call some of it NEW. You would think they would add the DTS track for disc 1 and then do the supplements all on disc 2. I could market that with Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis and get it back into Costco, Sams, etc the same way Fifth Element and Leon did. But with the current setup, this latest disc is nothing.

Yeah well this is just all around weak. No DTS? WTF? Also the LEAST they could have done is aquired rights to include the French short La Jetee which inspired Gilliam to create 12 Monkeys. What a load of simian poop!

Sorta blows, but I never picked up the original, and it's a great film, so I'll bite.

I'm with SvenL...I just wonder where I'll find an online reviewer kind enough to proactively check these issues of concern for us before street date...

Who knows... Out Of Sight is also OOP now, has been for a few months. Figure that one will end up getting the same treatment.

I'll pass, already own this disc... Unless it's a new, cleaner, transfer...

Universal sucks. Wow, they suck a lot. The only way I'd buy this again would be if Criterion released it with a ton more extras.
