DVD Player penetration rate?
Howdy! Does anybody have a recent link to any news articles which indicate the DVD Player Penetration rate in USA Homes? Or any video store workers reading this who have seen the number in a recent industry publication? And, how about VCR player penetration rate?
Friend is insisting that the only reason that video rental stores carry VHS tapes is to satisfy the GREAT NUMBER OF people who have DVD players which won't play the scratched up DVDs which they rent.
I insist that's pure BS, the reason that they carry tapes is for people who don't have DVD players, or have SUCH CHEAP DVD players that they won't play a DVD which has a fingerprint on it - like her player, which she insists won't play anything which she rents! Amazing!!

Total sales for this period: 52.6 million
December sales this month will probably be 3 million judging from this trend line.

Thanks people. I also regularly chart the CEA Numbers from Digital Bits, but what I was hoping for was a recent newspaper article with some numbers like "53% of American homes now own at least 1 DVD player" or something along those lines.
Oh well, no problem, I found some newspaper articles from January which said 50% of households, so I'm just going with that number.
Thank you!

When I'm renting, I have them open the disc while they're ringing me up so that I can examine it. If I see any scratches (which happens about 20% of the time), I'll go get a different one and repeat this process until I have one that looks scratch free. I also do this when I'm purchasing previewed DVD's from BlockBuster. By doing this, I haven't rented a DVD that had any issues with skipping (any problems at all, really) in over 2 years.

You know the number of sales of dvds is set to go down in a industry of years time. just like cds did in the mid 90s.
The theory is that once the majority of dvd player owners own all of there favorite catalog dvds there is very little room for growth in the industry and the only products being sold are new releases. The entertainmant Industry can't survive on just new artists and new recordings. the same is true for dvds once everyone or most people own all of there favorite movies there will be little sales in the market at all and so the trend of buying goes down. very few people really want to rebuy there products. that is the problem with the entertainment industry.
This is clearly what has happened to the Music industry because of lose of sales in the last 5 years the industry blames pirating for the lose of sales when infact part of that is not all true at all. but is do to the fact that people are buying less and less music. The trend is going down. I am sure copying music isn't helping the industry at all but it isn't the real problem behind the lose of sales. also the fact that there isn't as many good artists out there recording fresh music isn't helping.
sure sales of dvd players are up right now but that could go down once most mom and dad type people start buying Movies on domand, people like you and me will alwasy buy dvds but there are a lot of people who just don't really care and just want to watch a movie once and never really want to rewatch it or take it back to the vidoe store. those markets will start to grow in the next year or so and all of this will hurt dvds. what scares me and will upset me is if they start to price dvds for renting and make them 120 dollars to buy and later on sell it for 20 dollars. here in canada thats just what they do with VHS price to rent.

The market is already large enough that the characteristics of the market aren't as likely to change (i.e. regular joes are already in the market purchasing DVDs. It's not like the DVD market is still in its niche stage with only film lovers buying).
