Am I the only one that doesn't like beck?

So I got blasted by some friends and others last night, because it seems like I'm the only person that doesn't like Beck. I just don't get it...why is he so popular? I think his music is just bad, substandard muck.

I'm not trying to slam people that like it or anything, cause frankly I don't care. But does anyone else think he just sucks?

I also get blasted for not liking the Barenaked Ladies. I just think they are a weak group. anyone else?

I wouldn't say that I don't like Beck, but I don't think he's that good.

I don't like him.. i liked the "loser" song for like a week, back when it came out, but after that, i didn't listen to him, and then as the years went by, i just never bothered. Then one day someone was playing some album of his and I said "wtf is this crap?" and they said "beck"

I like him. Not everything (just couldn't get into "Mutations"), but a lot of stuff.

I was just replying to this thread because I wondered if submitting a post along the lines of "****** is great!" in what is essentially a "***** sucks!" thread is threadcrapping.... An odd form of threadcrapping, to be sure, but perhaps one nonetheless.

Any thoughts? Anybody have two turntables and a microphone they want to get rid of?

I actually like him, but I don't listen to him all the time.

FWIW, I think that "Loser" is probably the song of the 90's.

Here's a question for all: have you ever heard any of his albums?? If not, I suggest One Foot in the Grave, his indie collaboration with Calvin Johnson. If you like that then I would also recommend Mellow Gold and Odelay, two of the best albums of the 90's.

This pretty much sums up my feelings on him as well. I think he's a quirky talent, but not a major one. The singles I've heard have been fairly cool, but I never got much out of either mellow gold or odelay overall. After those, I sort of gave up on him.

I've actually tried to like him, I've listened to pretty much his entire catalogue, and I just think it's highly overrated crap. Especially Odelay.

Beck's not all that great, but the Barenaked Ladies are just horrible. If I had a million dollars, I'd invest it until I had enough money to get them to shut up.

I think I've gone the opposite route. "Loser" didn't do much for me, but over the years I've very much enjoyed Beck. I seem to keep comparing everything to what is on the radio.... and if you go by that, Beck is by far better than what's going on right now.
He's really melded different styles of music in a unique fashion.

I'm not a big fan of his recent stuff, but I liked Odelay and own that album. The only one I own.

Overrated? Possibly -- but I don't listen to critics anyway.

i don't like him much either. partly because people think he's this musical genius and i just don't see it. his 'quirkiness' feels really forced to me, like he just tries too hard to be this really eccentric character.

Actually that entire album is good, and his new one Sea Change is already getting the best reviews of his entire career.

His genius is how he can combine R n B, hip-hop, country, funk, soul, pop and rock seamlessly and sometimes within the same song.

He's one of the few artists that I pick to listen to years and years after I first heard them. I bought Mellow Gold when it first came out (1993 I think) and still listen to it all the time. Same goes for Odelay. A couple other 'perfect bands'...

Presidents of the United States of America
Weezer
Modest Mouse
Radiohead
Lou Reed
The Pixies
Husker Du
The Rentals
Blur

Their stuff just doesn't get old.

I'd also add Sonic Youth, Sleater-Kinney, My Bloody Valentine, Velvet Underground, Built to Spill, Yo La Tengo, Radiohead, Apples in Stereo, Melvins and Converge.

grunter shakes his head sadly at this thread and pops "Midnite Vultures" - one of the best albums of the last five years - back into his CD player, turning up the volume.

True, but probably not as well as Kid Rock can

I don't think that CD left my car stereo for 2-3 months, when it first came out.

I haven't listened to him since Odelay when he 'sold out'

His earlier work is good, but if you like that, check out Ween who are far superior.
