Digital vs. Hand-Painted Animation

My latest blog post addresses the contrast between hand-painted cel animation and digital animation, with the focus on background art in anime. I offer examples from the last two decades of the 20th century and, with the emergence of digital as the dominant mode of anime production, the first two decades of the 21st century. While my heart will always be with hand-drawn, I do point out some of the virtues of digital animation.

For me, it is not what you use as a tool to create art, it is what the end result is.

The bigger issue very soon will be AI-driven animation, which is already seeping into the production chain. AI can already credibly animate motion from 2D drawings.
