Death Note - How is it?

I've heard good things about the anime, and watched the first three episodes, but wondering if it's worth continuing on through the 36 episodes?

I like that the show is kind of a cat and mouse story, but there have been a few times when Light or "L" discover something about each other that feels a little too far fetched and not plausible.

The reviews for the manga/anime on amazon are good, but a lot of them seem fanatical and written by teenagers.

Also a lot of anime tend to go weird on me, like the last half of Berserk, and I feel like this might with the Shinigami it might go that way.

Re: Death Note - How is it?

I watched the anime for the first time within the last year. If you've enjoyed the first 3 episodes, you should keep with it. It gets convoluted at times, but it always seemed to me to maintain a classy intelligent tone.

A couple of caveats though. About two-thirds of the way through the series, the story goes in a direction that's ... well, disappointing. At least for me and a large number of viewers. If you reach that point (and you'll know it when you hit it) and you're really not liking the direction of the show, I'd advise to skip ahead and just watch the last couple of episodes to see how things turn out.

And at a certain point (fairly early in the series), there was the introduction of a teen J-pop idol character that I just found really grating and seemed to stick out like a sore thumb from the rest of the characters. Who knows ... maybe you'll love her

Had you ever seen the live-action Death Note movies? They're not held in as high esteem as the anime, but I really liked them. Aside from the basic premise and key characters, the story goes in a completely different direction than the anime (so one doesn't spoil the other). And I greatly prefer the resolution of the movies over the anime.

Oh, be really careful about reading forum posts about the show. Many of them drop major spoilers (some of them even in the title of a topic).

The first 15-20 episodes are as compelling as anything the anime field has produced. It does go in a different direction at some point that some don't like.
