“The Boy and the Heron,” a fantastical coming-of-age story from animation maestro Hayao Miyazaki, earned $12.8 million in its opening weekend, becoming the first original anime production to top the domestic box office. The GKids release is showing in Imax and other premium large format auditoriums, which bolstered its record-breaking revenues and helped secure its first place finish. It also benefitted from a lack of big-screen offerings, with holiday blockbusters such as “Wonka” and “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” still waiting to make their debuts in the coming weeks.

The Boy and the Heron has opened at #1 at the domestic box office grossing $12.8 million in its first week and becoming the first Miyazaki film to open at number one in the US. This is a well deserved honor for Studio Ghibli and I hope this allows their audience to grow further.

In planning a blog post on the simultaneous success in the U.S. of two Japanese films, THE BOY AND THE HERON and GODZILLA MINUS ONE, I began researching my past writings on Hayao Miyazaki and found an interview I did with him in 1999 when he came to New York to promote PRINCESS MONONOKE’s showing at the New York Film Festival and its subsequent release by Miramax in the U.S. As far as I can tell, I never published this piece anywhere so I decided to post it on my blog:

I picked up the art card rerelease of Kiki's Delivery Service yesterday to replace my Disney DVD, and while I think it's lame that they all come with the same 6 cards. I had previously picked up a copy of Totoro that included a mini poster (maybe from Walmart?) that I thought was a better pack in, but whatever keeps them on store shelves is a good thing. I will probably go ahead and pick up Spirited Away and Ponyo to replace those dvds too, so I guess I will be stuck with a stack of these cards.

I think we've been lucky GKIDS has stepped into this space and surpassed expectations. Seems like a very professional outfit handling international animation. I have few complaints with how they've done things since starting out.

IMO, their growth really started once they got control over the Studio Ghibli catalog (Disney seeming didn't want release all of the new Ghibli films). They pretty much want release anything and everything related to Ghibli (especially Hayao Miyazaki). I'm definitely glad they're around. Competition in the anime/animation films space can't be easy (against the likes Crunchyroll/Sony and Netflix).
