Goro Miyazaki to direct Summer 2011 anime about high school girl in 1963
The film journalist Hiroo Otaka reported on his Twitter account that Studio Ghibli announced its newest work, Goro Miyazaki's anime adaptation of Chizuru Takahashi and Tetsurō Sayama's Kokuriko-Saka Kara manga, on Wednesday. The story is set in Showa 38 (1963, before the Tokyo Olympics) and follows a high school girl's coming of age. The anime will open in Japan next summer.
The original manga ran in Kodansha's Nakayoshi shōjo magazine in 1980. Studio Ghibli's publishing department re-issued the manga this past July with a new wraparound jacket band that says that "Hayao Miyazaki recommends this!" Ghibli's sales blurb added that the studio is currently looking into whether the shōjo manga can be made into a movie.

Re: Studio Ghibli Adapts Kokuriko-Saka Kara Shōjo Manga
(Seriously, though, if this is half as good as two earlier, similarly-themed Ghibli releases, OCEAN WAVES, 1993, and WHISPER OF THE HEART, 1995, then I'm on board. But with Miyazaki the Lesser directing, there may not be much chance of that. We'll see.)

It had me up until Goro Miyazaki. I just don't see the guy being the future face of Ghibli.
Earthsea was an earth-shattering disappointment.

I'm surprised he's allowed to touch another project from Ghibli (regardless if he's Hayao's son) - considering 'Earthsea' was a walking abortion of a film.
