Clannad (subtitle)

I was wondering if the anime Clannad is really good? I have heard great reviews of Clannad but since it only has english subtitles I want other peoples opinions before I buy it.

All I could find out about Clannad was on Anime News Network.

Any input in much appreciated.

Re: Clannad (subtitle)

Highly, highly recommended. One of my favorite series ever.

1. Superb animation by KyoAni. (KyoAni also animated Haruhi, if you know that series)

2. The story. It's really a long arc (since you have to count Clannad After Story in the mix), but it works very, very well with nice pacing. The storyline comes from a game (it's a eroge dating sim, but any sexual element from the game is completely removed from the series) by Key. Key and KyoAni worked together on two other series, "Air" and "Kanon" (Air, Kanon, and Clannad (along with "One")) work as sort of a companion series (Air = summer, Kanon = winter, Clannad = spring, One = autumn), but you don't need to have seen one to enjoy the others.

Really, I can't say enough about this series. It's a must-watch.

Re: Clannad (subtitle)

I personally really love the series (of what I have seen so far - 3 half season sets). I have not finished watching After Story (see my countdown below). It some ways it's kind of hard to put the franchise in words. Throughout the series, you really get to know the characters and they interact with one another. It's just feels like a really balanced series with its share of emotions, comedy, and romance. If this is your cup of tea, it's something that I would recommend.

Re: Clannad (subtitle)

I really haven't watched it yet. I started the first half season a few months back but haven't gotten back to it yet. I already got the first three half season sets and I rather just wait for the next set to be released before watching it through. For me its not the type of Anime that just have to see now.

If own or watch other similar types of Anime like this then I don't see why you wouldn't like it. For me, Action, Adventure, Sci-fi and Fantasy related Anime over Romance and Comedy but that is just me.

I would say its worth buying but if your not a fan of the genre then there isn't a point in buying it unless you just like to collect everything. A lot of Anime is better Subbed IMO but there a few like Beck that is way better dubbed.

Re: Clannad (subtitle)

My copy of Clannad After Story collection 2 just shiped from RightStuf today.

Kanon 1 - 4 dub, just got put on Funimations online player today to. The animation looks just as good. I guess thats why Clannad says for Kanon and Air fans on the case.

Same animation studio (Kyoto Animation) and based on visual novels from the same studio (Key). And all are indeed incredible.

From Clannad to the fanservice festival that is ToLoveRu. Interesting combo there.

(ToLoveRu is cute in its own way, at least)

Re: Clannad (subtitle)

Just finsished reading WTK's reviews (very good btw, I also love Clannad) but I was wondering what the general opinion of the subtitles and the translation quality from the Sentai Films release was?

I've seen some comments on Amazon about some parts not being literal transaltions. An example mentioned is with the Fuko character who always referes to herself in the third person "Fuko is happy.." etc and its translated as "I'm happy", loosing the third person element.

I used to buy a lot of ADV releases, until their uk op went under without fulfiling my order, so I'm being a bit more picky now. Is it an original ADV/Sentai translation or simply them licensing the translation from another company?

Sorry I don't do reviews. The Clannad reviews are done by Todd (Dragon Fly).

Subtitles may be to par for some. There are subtitle errors (syntax and such). It depends on how picky you're with stuff like this.

I thought it's fair. Then again, it depends on who you talk to (and if you compare it to let's say fansubs).

ADV Films is dead in terms of the name/brand. More from a while back...via RACS
...UPDATE: Just got off the phone with Mike Baliff, formerly of ADV Films who is now heading up Sales and Marketing at the new company Section 23 Films. Section 23 has acquired all of ADV's former licenses and most of the staff (including Chris Oarr, Destiny, Michelle, everyone formerly at ADV that mattered), and is picking up distribution of all former ADV titles, so the DVD's will remain available and our orders will just be processed and filled by the new company. That means the changeover will be pretty much transparent to you guys. This includes pre-order items in the pipeline but not yet released. They will still be coming out, and the schedule will not change. We'll be updating our catalog over the next few days to reflect Section 23 as the new distributor of ADV's (former) titles. I also think it's worth mentioning that John Ledford is not part of the new company. Thanks very much to Mike for calling me personally to walk us through the changeover. Mike and I go back a long way, maybe 10 or 11 years, and I feel like ADV's former line of products could not have fallen into better hands.

Sorry my mistake, I assumed as you posted the links you had written them, plus you avatar.

Todd- My apologies and thanks for the great reviews.

Thanks for the info on ADV, certainly clears up a lot of uncertainly I had and it explains a lot, such as the subs only releases and the new companies. My distaste will now be redirected to Sojitz for killing ADV UK.

I may go ahead and pick the Clannad collections then, especially as it seems there wont be a dub release any time soon. I only tend to use subs really but the rest of my family like the dubs so I try to buy it with both if I can. There was some suggestion of Funimation getting it after Sentai and doing a dub, but a while off even if it happens.

I don't mind the odd syntax errors as long as it dosn't damage the meaning too much, I've picked up Japanese versions where the english subs are quite er.. unique, but there enough to follow it and its better than no dvd at all, especially for J-Dramas that don't seem to get released much.
