Update to the Crunchyroll x Funimation Partnership

Dear CR users,

As many of you know, we have had an ongoing partnership with Funimation the last two years, sharing anime between users. Unfortunately, Funimation has decided to go their separate way, and this partnership will be winding down on Friday, November 9th.

For our Crunchyroll community, this means that you’ll still be able to access the biggest anime library in the world. However, a list of select catalog titles licensed via Funimation will be leaving Crunchyroll - likewise, the Funimation catalog will also be impacted. That list is currently being finalized between both parties, and we will share impacted titles with you as available. Currently-airing simulcasts and series that premiered during the partnership will continue to be available on Crunchyroll, including favorites like Attack on Titan and My Hero Academia. Additionally, all home video releases will be released as scheduled and all pre-orders will be fulfilled.

As demonstrated by our record year of anime announcements, Crunchyroll is more committed than ever to bringing you the best and latest series from Japan, as well as expanding our catalog of classics. We’ve just launched a strong fall season -- with the likes of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, and Sword Art Online Alicization -- and plan to bring much more anime to you in the future.

What’s next?

At Funimation, we strive to continually improve the fan experience and expand the reach of anime. In the last two years, we have established ourselves as the anime industry’s most advanced streaming platform, expanded our global footprint, and accelerated our dub speed to market for new episodes coming out of Japan.

While our partnership with Crunchyroll is ending, we are excited about the future, the support of Sony Pictures Television and their commitment alongside ours, to build the best experience for anime fans globally.


Will there be a change in content on FunimationNow effective immediately or at a future date?

Funimation and Crunchyroll have mutually agreed to transition content on November 9, 2018. At this time, FunimationNow subscribers will have access to the several hundred subbed shows, previously unavailable. In addition, a handful of dubbed shows will no longer be available on FunimationNow.


Will Funimation continue to be available on VRV or will that change as well?

Funimation’s channel will be leaving VRV on November 9, 2018.


Will shows currently available on FunimationNow be affected?

As mentioned above, a handful of dubbed shows will come off FunimationNow and several hundred subbed shows will soon be available on FunimationNow.

Fan-favorite shows like Attack on Titan, Dragon Ball Super, Fairy Tail, My Hero Academia, and Tokyo Ghoul among many other great titles will be available in both subbed and dubbed episodes on FunimationNow. Similarly, shows that were acquired during the partnership will continue to available as dubbed episodes on FunimationNow.


Will my shows in the coming Fall season be affected?

We do not anticipate any disruptions in show availability during the coming fall 2018 season. You can continue to enjoy watching the new dubbed episodes.


Will Funimation continue to offer the same number of new shows in future seasons?

It is our mission to bring the best anime to the most people possible and we plan to continue providing the quality and quantity fans are used to seeing from Funimation.


Does this change affect Funimation’s normal release schedule for new Simuldub episodes?

We currently do not anticipate this change to affect the accelerated dubbing capabilities of our in-house production studios. We plan on bringing new dubbed episodes at the same rate and frequency as in previous seasons, subject as always, to the availability of materials from Japan.


Will newly-acquired shows be available in both subbed and dubbed episodes on FunimationNow?

Beginning as early as this January, during our winter 2019 season, our intent is to make a selection of newly-acquired titles available in both subbed and dubbed episodes on FunimationNow.


I love my home video collection. Does this change affect the availability of current Funimation home video titles?

Does this change affect current and/or future pre-orders of any Funimation home video titles?

Does the change affect availability or support of any FunimationNow apps?

We plan to maintain all FunimationNow apps available on manufacturer-supported OS, devices, consoles and platforms. FunimationNow is currently available on iOS, Android, Windows 10, Roku, AndroidTV, AppleTV, FireTV, Chromecast, Kindle and Samsung SmartTVs as well as the Xbox One and PS4 consoles.


Will I still have the option to watch content for free?

We will continue to offer a free viewing option on FunimationNow, and like our premium subscribers, free users will also enjoy access to several hundred additional subbed shows on the service.


Will you offer a sub-only subscription again?

We don’t plan on offering a sub-only subscription option. Funimation currently offers both sub and dub fans with the best priced option for the legal streaming of anime.


Social Media

Will there be a change in the official show-specific social media accounts that I currently follow?

We don’t anticipate any changes to show-specific accounts on social media. If you are ever unsure if a show page or profile is “official,” we recommend that you only follow verified accounts, which are always authentic.


International Customers

Will Funimation’s catalog of subbed shows be available on FunimationNow outside the U.S. and Canada?

Subject to final licensor approval, we expect several hundred subbed shows to soon be available on FunimationNow in the U.K., Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.


Will future Funimation shows be available in both subbed and dubbed episodes on FunimationNow outside the U.S. and Canada?

Whenever available, we will acquire the international rights to new shows so that we can distribute these shows in both subbed and dubbed episodes on FunimationNow in the U.K., Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.


Does this change affect the availability of any current or future home video releases?

All currently announced home video titles will be released as scheduled in the U.K., Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.


Will FunimationNow be offered in non-English languages now?

Our goal is to offer the best anime experience available to fans around the world and we expect to offer FunimationNow in non-English languages in the future.

Sony’s Funimation Ends Anime Licensing Pact With Crunchyroll

Funimation channel also will leave VRV, operated by AT&T's Otter Media

Anime distributor Funimation has ended its cross-licensing deal with Crunchyroll after two years, as Sony-owned Funimation looks to expand globally.

The decision to not renew the 2016 pact with Crunchyroll — now fully owned by AT&T after it acquired Chernin Group’s stake in Otter Media — stems from Funimation’s own acquisition by Sony Pictures Television a year ago.

Sony is making additional investments in the Funimation to make it “a global sub[titled] and dub anime brand,” Gen Fukunaga, Funimation’s president and CEO, wrote in an Oct. 18 internal memo obtained by Variety.

According to Fukunaga, the deal with Crunchyroll “ended amicably this month.”

With the end of the pact, as of Nov. 9, 2018, FunimationNow streaming subscribers will have access to several hundred subbed anime titles when the catalog reverts to Funimation, while “a handful” of dubbed titles will no longer be available on FunimationNow, according to Fukunaga’s memo. All the titles licensed during the partnership will continue to be shared with Crunchyroll and available to FunimationNow subscribers.

According to Funimation, the list of Crunchyroll titles that will roll off FunimationNow has not been finalized yet so. Some top titles that will now be available on FuninamtionNow in subbed episodes include: “My Hero Academia,” “Cowboy Bebop,” “Space Dandy,” “Yu Yu Hakusho,” “Assassination Classroom,” “Snow White with the Red Hair” and “Death Parade.”

In addition, with the end of the Crunchyroll deal, on Nov. 9, Funimation’s channel will no longer be available on VRV, the digital-subscription aggregation platform run by Otter Media’s Ellation.

FunimationNow costs $5.99 per month (or $59.99 for a one-year subscription). The service is currently available in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. In addition to the titles listed above, Funimation’s catalog includes “Dragon Ball Z,” “One Piece,” “Attack on Titan,” “Shin Godzilla” and romantic-fantasy smash hit “Your Name.” Funimation Films’ latest theatrical release is Toho Co. Ltd.’s “My Hero Academia: Two Heroes” (pictured above), which the company said is its second-highest box-office release garnering $5.7 million during its Sept. 25-Oct. 11 release.

Under their now-expired pact, Crunchyroll and Funimation each shared anime titles across streaming, home-video and electronic sell-through channels. Crunchyroll focused on subtitled content while Funimation specialized in English-dubbed programming of Japanese anime (“broadcast dubs”).

In July 2017, Sony Pictures Television Networks acquired a 95% majority stake in Funimation for about $143 million. Funimation is housed in SPT’s new direct-to-consumer unit headed by chief digital officer Eric Berger. Formed as part of a reorg this summer, the unit consolidates Sony Crackle along with Funimation, Film1 and Animax services.

Founded in 1994 as Funimation Productions, the company is now based in Flower Mound, Texas, near Fort Worth.
