Re: The 5th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***LISTS GO HERE!*

2005 October Horror Movie Challenge List 79 movies
2006 October Horror Movie Challenge List 105 movies
2007 October Horror Movie Challenge List 159 movies
2008 October Horror Movie Challenge List 164 movies

10/1/09 -The Laserdisc player was still hooked up after watching Time Bandits for last month's Criterion challenge, so I watched some unwatched LDs

1) Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight (1995) - The Crypt Keeper tells a longer-than-usual tale of demons and a guy who fights them.
2) Death Becomes Her (1992) - Sort of like a long episode of Tales from the Crypt: Two women want eternal youth, and what happens to them after they get it.
3) Arachnophobia (1990) - A jungle spider on the loose in a small town mates with local spiders, and their mutant offspring go out and kill local residents. John Goodman steals the show.

10/2/09 - Couldn't make up my mind what to watch and finally settled on the movie-of-the-day

4) The Night of the Doomed (Nightmare Castle) (1965) - Barbara Steele cheats on her husband. She gets caught and is tortured and killed by him. Then he marries her sister, Barbara Steele. Not a bad film, but it took me a few tries to get through it. Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood.

10/3/09 - Nature goes nuts

5) The Worm Eaters (1977) - People eat worms, then turn into worm-people. A few laughs (some intentional).
6) Squirm (1976) - Worms eat people. As slow as I remember from when I first saw it thirty-some years ago. Stick with the MST3K version.
7) Something Is Out There (Day of the Animals) (1977) - In this "fact-based" film I learned that "ozone radiation" can make animals (and Leslie Nielsen) go nuts and attack people.

10/4/09 - Zombie Sunday

8) Zombie Campout (2002) - Meteor storm wakes the dead in nearby cemetery, spoiling two young couples' weekend camping trip. A few laughs (many intentional).
9) Zombiegeddon (2006) - A couple of cops fight some zombies. It was crap. Absolute crap.
10) I Zombie: The Chronicles of Pain (1998) - Guy gets bitten by zombie, then chronicles the pain of his new zombie existence.
11) The Zombie Chronicles (2001) - Old guy tells a woman some stories. Boring, but had halfway decent special effects.
12) The Zombie Diaries (2007) - Zombie apocalypse as videotaped by a couple of groups of survivors.

10/5/09 - Monday sucks

13) Vampire Diary (2006) - Another videotaped diary. This time with a lesbian vampire.
14) Barely Legal Lesbian Vampires: The Curse of Ed Wood! (1999) - Unfortunately they weren't lipstick lesbians. And I can only assume "barely legal" was in reference to their immigration status or something. Worse than Zombiegeddon.
15) Lesbian Vampire Killers (2008) - Two fellas go on holiday and end up in a village cursed by lesbian vampires. Tries to be Shaun of the Dead with lesbian vampires in place of zombies, but comes up short. Still worth a look.
16) Vampire Assassin (2004) - A low-rent Blade wannabe stumbles through a few dozen crappy fight scenes, then the movie mercifully ends. Has a few unintentionally hilarious moments, but not enough to make it worthwhile.
17) I Bought a Vampire Motorcycle (1990) - A "vampire demon" possesses a motorcycle which is subsequently purchased by a bike messenger. The vampire motorcycle goes on a killing spree, C-3PO performs an exorcism, then some other stuff happens. Could've been worse.
18) Gothic Vampires from Hell: Battle of the Bands (2006) - And yet another shot-on-video suckfest to round out the day. Three female vampire record execs feed on the participants in a battle of the bands, then decide to make the scrawny lead singer of the titular band their "master" so he can lead them "toward the enslavement of humans."

10/6/09 - Hellzapoppin'

19) Ikenie (Doll from Hell) (1995) - A rather clean-cut gang of young people kill one of their own, then kill a young woman they think saw the first murder. Her father, who had been building a life-size doll of her, kills himself, pouring his lifeblood onto the doll in a ritual designed to bring his daughter back to life inside the doll.
20) Black Devil Doll from Hell (1984) - Woman buys ventriloquist dummy. Hilarity ensues.
21) Hellmaster (1992) - John Saxon plays a mad scientist who created a drug that he uses to turn homeless people into murderous "soulless freaks," and the helicopter pilot from Dawn of the Dead wants to put a stop to it.
22) The Other Hell (1980) - After some nuns are killed at a convent, Father Valerio, "ecclesiastical detective," is sent to investigate the mysterious deaths.
23) Invitation to Hell (1984) - Wes Craven made-for-TV movie has Robert Urich moving to a new town and going to work for Kevin McCarthy on a project to build a spacesuit for the first manned mission to Venus. Soon his new neighbors and people at his new job start pressuring him to join the local country club.
24) Jigoku (Japanese Hell) (1999) - Japanese girl follows in Dante's footsteps; sees people tortured in hell.

10/7/09 - Road trip!

25) Highway to Hell (1991) - After Kristy Swanson is taken to hell by a demon cop, it's up to Chad Lowe to save her from spending eternity with Ben Stiller and Gilbert Gottfried.
26) Devil's Highway (2005) - A demon possesses and kills people traveling on a bus. The movie does such an impressive job of simulating a long, boring bus trip that you'll feel like you're part of the inaction.
27) Lost Highway (1996) - It's a David Lynch film: Lots of weird shit happens, then the end credits roll.

10/8/09 - Road trip - Day 2

28) Rest Stop (2006) - Woman is terrorized at a rest stop by a guy in an old Ford pickup.
29) Wrong Turn 2: Dead End (2007) - Family of mutants hunt and kill reality show contestants.
30) Wrong Way (1972) - A couple of groovy chicks are riding along a back road when their Dodge Dart breaks down. They get raped by hippies and end up prisoners of a murderous cult or something. Then some scenes from another film appear to have been edited onto the end of this one to pad out the run time.
31) Drive Thru (2006) - Fast food spokesclown kills high school kids when he isn't stealing plot points from better movies.
32) Hitch-Hike (1978) - Italian couple on a camping trip picks up hitchhiker David Hess. I guess they didn't see The Last House on the Left.

10/9/09 - Road trip - Day 3

33) The Hitcher (1986) - Rutger Hauer and C. Thomas Howell play cat and mouse on desert highways.
34) The Hitcher II: I've Been Waiting (2003) - C. Thomas Howell drives through the desert (again) and picks up a hitchhiker (again).
35) The Hitcher (2006) - So-so remake with a few minor changes.

10/10/09 - "Little old lady got mutilated late last night..."

36) Hybrid (2006) - Blind guy gets wolf-eye transplant, which, of course, results in better night-vision, better hearing, enhanced sense of smell, and wolf-like behavior. Sucked.
37) Wolves of Wall Street (2002) - Guy starts job on Wall Street and becomes a werewolf. Not very good.
38) Horrors of War (2006) - American GIs fight a werewolf and German super soldiers.
39) Trick 'r Treat (2007) - Several interconnected stories that take place in one neighborhood one Halloween night.

40) WILDCARD #1 - Dexter: "Our Father" (Episode 3.01) / "Finding Freebo" (Episode 3.02)

10/11/09 - The Return of Zombie Sunday

41) Zombie vs Ninja (1988) - After his father is killed, a young man becomes an undertaker's apprentice. Between some more or less randomly spliced in footage of some white guys (the "ninjas") walking around, talking, or fighting in a forest, the undertaker teaches the guy Kung Fu using reanimated corpses (the "zombies") as sparring partners.
42) Zombies: The Beginning (2007) - A woman who escaped a zombie infested island joins an expedition back to the island.
43) Oasis of the Zombies (1981) - People looking for gold at an oasis find zombies instead.

44) WILDCARD #2 - Dexter: "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" (Episode 3.03) / "All in the Family" (Episode 3.04)

10/12/09 - Bride of Monday sucks

45) Night Junkies (2006) - Stripper becomes a vampire, then tries to kick the bloodsucking habit.
46) 30 Days of Night (2007) - Vampires take over a small town in Alaska.
47) Brotherhood of Blood (2007) - While a group of vampire hunters is tracking Sid Haig and his vampire clan, both groups are searching for a resurrected super-vampire.

48) WILDCARD #3 - Dexter: "Turning Biminese" (Episode 3.05) / "Si Se Puede" (Episode 3.06)

10/14/09 - "Please remain seated until the ride comes to a complete stop."

53) The Funhouse (1981) - Four teens spend the night in a funhouse.
54) Frightworld (2007) - Guy wants to reopen an old horror-themed amusement park. He takes his annoying friends to see it, and they decide to stay there overnight. Then, after what seems like hours, a reanimated dead serial killer starts to kill them off one by one. Too bad he didn't just kill them all at once and put an end to it sooner.
55) Dark Ride (2006) - Four Six teens spend the night in a funhouse dark ride.
56) Dark Carnival (1997) - Group opens a Halloween "haunted house" and a demon or something makes them want to kill each other. I should've watched Zombiegeddon again.

10/15/09 - A few houses

57) House of Blood (2006) - Following a bus crash, some escaped convicts get lost in the forest and stumble upon a house filled with monsters.
58) House of Terror (1972) - A wealthy man hires a nurse to care for his wife. After the wife appears to commit suicide, the nurse's boyfriend convinces her to marry the widower so they can kill him for his money.
59) Dr. Terror's House of Horrors (1965) - Amicus anthology film with Peter Cushing using a deck of tarot cards to tell five fellow train passengers their fortunes.
60) Dr. Moreau's House of Pain (2003) - It's the late '40s, and a guy and two women are looking for the guy's missing brother. They end up at an estate where Dr. Moreau is continuing his experiments.

10/16/09 - A few more houses

61) Horror House on Highway Five (1985) - A doofus and his idiot assistant kidnap a college girl to use in some kind of occult ritual. Meanwhile, two of the girl's classmates and some random people in the neighborhood are stalked by a killer wearing a Nixon mask.

10/17/09 - "I saw a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand..."

65) Wolfhound (2002) - American author looking for a quiet place to work on a book moves to the tiny Irish village his parents were from. He soon learns that the village is occupied by lycanthropes who turn into Wolfhounds (I guess it was either that or Irish Setters). A fair amount of nudity didn't help this dog.
66) Werewolf Woman (1976) - Woman finds out that an ancestor who looked like her was a werewolf and begins to act like a werewolf herself. A fair amount of nudity didn't help this dog either.
67) The Feeding (2005) - Two government agents and a group of campers run into a werewolf in the woods.
68) Werewolf: The Devil's Hound (2006) - After a werewolf is caught and thrown in a crate, it ends up mixed in with a fireworks shipment sent to an effects studio. There it bites an employee who starts to become a werewolf himself. Pretty much sucked.
69) Big Bad Wolf (2006) - College kids go to a cabin in the woods where they are attacked by a werewolf. The survivors have to figure out who the werewolf is so they can kill it before it kills them.
70) The Beast Must Die (1974) - Rich guy invites five people (one of whom he suspects is a werewolf) to his country estate. "Watch for the werewolf break," then make your guess which one it is.

10/18/09 - Son of Zombie Sunday

71) Zombies Gone Wild (2007) - Three nerds on spring break meet some girls who are zombies. Painfully bad.
72) Flight of the Living Dead: Outbreak on a Plane (2006) - Zombie outbreak on a plane.
73) Zombie Death House (1987) - John Saxon is in charge of a government project to create super soldiers using a mutated virus. The virus is tested on prisoners, with predictable results. Most of this film takes place at Christmas if you need something new to watch during the Holiday Challenge.
74) Zombie Night (2004) - Canadians struggle to survive the zombie apocalypse.
75) Zombiez (2005) - It's called Zombiez, so of course I knew it would suck. I just wasn't expecting that level of suck.

10/19/09 - The Ghost of Monday sucks

76) Vampires vs. Zombies (2004) - Another retelling of Le Fanu's Carmilla, but with a few random zombies thrown in for no reason. I suppose it could've been worse. At least it wasn't Vampirez vs. Zombiez.
77) Killer Barbys vs. Dracula (2002) - The titular band and the titular vampire are at an amusement park in Spain. One spends most of the movie playing music, the other spends most of it running around acting like an idiot.
78) Vamps: Deadly Dreamgirls (1995) - Vampire strippers.
79) Razor Blade Smile (1998) - Female vampire works as a killer for hire. Better than Vampire Assassin. Barely.

80) WILDCARD #4 - Dexter: "Easy as Pie" (Episode 3.07) / "The Damage a Man Can Do" (Episode 3.08)

10/20/09 - Hideshi Hino's Theater of Horror box set

81) Hino Hideshi no Za HorÔ: Kaiki Gekij˘: Jigoku Koz˘ (Hideshi Hino's "Theater of Horror": The Boy from Hell) (2004) - Surgeon's son is killed in a car accident. Old lady tells her how to bring him back from the dead. He returns, uglier and hungry for human flesh. Not very good, but the short runtime helped.
82) Hino Hideshi no Za HorÔ: Kaiki Gekij˘: Kaiki! Shinin Sh˘jo (Hideshi Hino's "Theater of Horror": Dead Girl Walking) (2004) - Girl dies but keeps walking around. Seemed to drag on for hours. Wet Paint Drying would've made a more interesting movie.
83) Hino Hideshi no Za HorÔ: Kaiki Gekij˘: Watashi no Akachan (Hideshi Hino's "Theater of Horror": Lizard Baby) (2004) - Guy whose wife is pregnant is writing a horror movie about a woman giving birth to a half-lizard/half-human baby. Easily the best of the three of these I watched today.

10/21/09 - Still going through the box set

This one was weird enough to be interesting.
87) Hino Hideshi no Za HorÔ: Kaiki Gekij˘: Ky˘fu Ressha (Hideshi Hino's "Theater of Horror": Death Train) (2004) - Three girls get on a train. There's apparently an accident, and they end up in an alternate reality with zombie-like people chasing them. Not too bad, but not too good either.

88) WILDCARD #6 - Dexter: "I Had a Dream" (Episode 3.11) / "Do You Take Dexter Morgan?" (Episode 3.12)

10/22/09 - Could only squeeze in one movie today

89) She Beast (1966) - Barbara Steele and some guy are newlyweds on their honeymoon in Transylvania. Their VW crashes into a lake where a witch was drowned 200 years earlier, and Barbara Steele is replaced by said witch for most of the movie.

10/24/09 - Saturday "of the dead"

93) Dance of the Dead (2008) - Waste from local nuclear plant reanimates the occupants of local cemetery who then attack high school kids at their prom. "Borrows" heavily from other films (most obviously The Return of the Living Dead), but worth a look.

95) Army of the Dead (2007) - People looking for gold in the desert find an army of CGI skeletons.
96) Platoon of the Dead (2009) - Soldiers with ray guns fight zombies with ray guns. This one reached new levels of suck.

10/26/09 - Monday sucks: the Final Monday

101) Underworld: Evolution (2006) - Sequel has Kate Beckinsale trying to stop the first vampire (released from his prison as a result of events in the first film) from releasing his twin (the first werewolf) from his prison.
