Re: The One & Only DOCTOR WHO DVD Thread (8th Incarnation)

New Nu-Who is dropping tonight on Disney+ and midnight Saturday across the pond. I'm not sure if qualifies and better or worse when episodes broadcast on BBC America, except that it's probably easier/cheaper to get Disney+ (especially if you wait for all the eps to drop and then sign up for a month) and I already subscribe to Disney+, so I'm good to go. I think it's supposed to be two eps tonight, so the real question is do I binge them or watch one tonight and the other tomorrow (not likely to last any longer).

"73 Yards" is new nu Who's first horror episode. Davies' influences for the episode seem to be "Whistle and I'll Come to You" (1968)/Whistle and I'll Come to You (2010) and It Follows (2014), though more the former than the latter probably. Most people in the States will have never heard of much less seen either version or read the story (Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Lad (1904)). Also, no opening titles, just the episode name and writer credit. After you watch the episode you can ponder if they just needed the time or if it meant something more. This season is chugging along nicely.

I have a friend that would find the episodes online through sketchy means after they aired in England, but before they aired on BBC America. Keep in mind that they were airing in the same 24 hour period. I told him that was a lot of trouble to go through instead of waiting a few hours, and it wasn't like the earlier seasons where there were months between the airings. But he was worried about spoilers, which the Doctor Who social media pages are bad about posting as soon as the episodes aired in England.

Looks like we'll bet getting an announcement about recovered episodes soon!

Thanks. As mentioned by Sue Malden at our RECOVERED event in May, we are aware of several missing episodes of Doctor Who (Sue stated one or two, but there are more than this) in private film collections in the U.K. We are liaising with the individuals about cataloguing and preserving their entire collection, including the missing Doctor Who episodes, and ensuring that copies are returned to the BBC. We expect to make a detailed announcement shortly.

Long story short, a private charity called Film is Fabulous has been working with private film collectors to get film copies of old tv shows returned to the BBC archive.

I know we've gotten our hopes up before, but folks in the know seem to see FiF's statements as being very promising.

I still think that big announcement a few years back about them finding over 90 episodes actually had a grain of truth to it. But they must have announced it too soon and some of the collector's got cold feet and pulled back.

Whatever the case, let's hope for something fun.

Re: The One & Only DOCTOR WHO DVD Thread (8th Incarnation)

I was looking through my collection and I realized I had Spearhead from Space (Jon Pertwee's debut) twice; I have the original DVD set and then also the Blu-ray. Does anyone know if there are any extras that didn't get brought over from the DVD to the Blu so I can let go of the DVD for space?

According to this reddit, the blu-ray doesn't port over the DVD features, but the season 7 blu-ray set does. Not sure if they're referring to the US or UK releases, though.

Hmm. Would have been nice to downsize one of them, maybe I'll get a multi disc case and combine them one way or the other.

thanks

Seems to be some kind of sale going on at Amazon. Bunch of Limited Time Deals, but most of these have been on sale previously. Some are at a new low for me.

HOLY SHIT!

"Daleks Master Plan" episodes 1 and 3 have been recovered!

(I'd rather they have recovered eps 4 and 12, with Katarina and Sara Kingdom's death scenes and the Time Destructor, but it's still great to have two more from this story back. Gotta take what we can. Maybe more will turn up!)

Great news. Hopefully more collectors come forward with their hidden treasures.
