this one has me baffled. The trailers make it look pretty lame. IMDB has it at a 8.5....
Huffpost calls it a damn near comedy.

Most critics seem to like it, early audience reaction was very strong. But no movie pleases everybody.

I didn't read the book, but have read dozens of King stories. I ended up giving it four stars (of five) in my review. What I found striking was the fatigue factor. I equated it to a two-hour roller coaster. It's a great ride, but just too much of a good thing.
The Stand By Me moments work to this film's benefit. It distracts you just enough to let the deeper horror moments work. However, the presentation can be easily ruined by the wrong audience. Our press screening had some freebie contest winners in it and a bunch of them laughed through parts that simply weren't funny.
The actual funny moments were extremely funny and well placed. What surprised me the most was the sheer number of hits it connected with. We do something unique with our reviews. We chart our engagement in real time and I was shocked by the number of data points at the end. It was like being in a boxing ring with a jab artist. Pop, pop, pop, pop. Breathe. Pop, pop, pop, pop. Exhausting.

I mean, it has an 89% on RT right now after 124 reviews with an average of 7.2/10, which is fantastic for a horror film. It's going to crush at the box office this weekend.

I will like to hear what Tim Curry has to say...he played "It" perfectly in the original and his mannerisms, face expressions and voice was great. They've done an outstanding job on makeup on Bill's "IT" which is creepy and sinister as ever.....looking forward to this.

Looking forward to this actually. Haven't seen a true horror movie in theater since, I think, The Conjuring. And that was like 4 years ago? (unless you consider The Visit or Split horror). Smaller fair like The Witch or It Comes at Night, I can wait till home video or digital.
Glad it's R and true to King's book. Violence and mayhem with kids always scares me. Adults not so much, but kids, yes. Trailer does look like Stranger Things with more scares and horror and stuff...

I liked this quite a bit. I didn't find it to be overly frightening but more it just has a lot of creepy aspects to it. The kids were all great and Skarsgard was great as Pennywise. As far as the comedy moments I feel like they mostly worked. If I had any complaints I'd probably say I was starting to feel it's run time a bit by the end and feel like it could have been trimmed down a bit. Also I sort of feel like Pennywise could have been explained a bit better. He just is what he is in the film and we don't really know why or what causes him to be present. Maybe if I had read the book there's more of an explanation but I felt like he could have had a short backstory or something that sets him up. Overall though I still liked it and think it's worth seeing. Generally horror films are hit and miss with me in modern times but this works (though I don't know if I'd classify it as a full blown horror film honestly).

The strength of the Stephen King brand just proved itself as the R-rated It‘s Thursday showings delightfully horrified crowds, grabbing hold of $13.5M in previews that began at 7 PM. That means it nabbed the largest horror pre-show gross ever, the largest R-rated preview as well as the largest Sept. preview and the biggest ever for a movie based on a a Stephen King book. It could run past $90M, and the box office that has been limping along is now, as expected supercharging September as it will, indeed, continue to break records.

I thought it was a good movie. The R rating gives it a lot more freedom than the tv series and this is also quite different than that series. They don't try and remake any scenes that I can recall.

I really enjoyed this last night. The theater was pretty full as well.
It did have a ton of Stand By Me comparisons with the kids, but it did echo a ton from the original mini-series as well. I dare say that this clown was more frightening than Tim Curry's version, but I liked both performances. The kid from Stranger Things, Finn Wolfhard, really stole the movie, but maybe it was because he was given the best material. One thing I really liked about this one was that it was able to focus more on the kids as characters. It wasn't just a scary clown movie. It had heart, emotion, and welded that with the ability to frighten the viewer. I'll probably purchase this one upon release and I did enjoy it overall more than the original mini-series. Looking forward to the sequel with the adult versions to see what they can do with that. Side note: the young girl who played Beverly reminded me a lot of Amy Adams and if they don't try to cast Adams for the sequel, they're missing out.

Caught this last night. Probably the best creature feature made in a long time in terms of good effects, a scary monster, and most of all , characters you cared about. Somewhat disappointed they didn't get in all of the classic monsters (wolfman, mummy, Dracula) like King intended when he wrote his book, but I guess there may have been copyright reasons. Given that this was New Line, they could have easily substituted Freddy Kruger and Jason Voorhees into roles, but then that would have shifted the focus more towards the cameos than the story. This does not require a book read to understand at all, but it does make some moments that seem weird otherwise make sense like Ed's overweight mother, and also (spoilerizing for sequel territory)
I fell they made a wise decision moving the setting from the 50s to the 80s, as it makes most of the adult audience who remember this book or original series from the childhood able to connect better with the kids.
Looking ahead to casting for the sequel, I don't really know who would work. Skarsgard will obviously reprise his role. I am kind of hoping that since they worked together on "Mama" that Muschetti might be able to land Jessica Chastain for the older Beverly.
Overall, WAY better than most King adaptations, and probably the best horror adaptation to date(say what you will about The Shining, but that was mostly a Kubrick story inspired by King).

There has been talk since the get go that Chastain would be the older Beverly. I read that they planned to film a coda with her for this, but the idea was scrapped.

I will most likely go see this in theaters soon, but as a life long SK fan I am still feeling the burn of the Dark Tower. I started those books in the late 80s and had been looking forward to the movie for a long time only to have that horror in theaters.... as we all know adaptations of his work tend to be very hit or miss...

I'll be honest, I never liked the book. I thought it was good, but as with a log of Stephen King books, he put some goofy shit in there that makes it not be as good as it could be. I did enjoy the miniseries but haven't seen it since it first came out. So I am by no means an It/King super fan.
Overall, I enjoyed this a lot but it has a lot of problems that ruin it for me and kept it from being a masterpiece.
The Good:
-I thought Muschietti was a great choice for this and I would love to see him reboot the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. The art direction is well done and it really feels like a small town.
-I thought the kids were all cast really well. No real weak link with them but I did have some issues with them(I'll get back to them later). I thought Wolfhard and the actress playing Bev were the standouts.
-I thought Skarsgard was great. Much like Jackie Earl Haley did in the Elm St. remake, his portrayal of Pennywise was different enough that it made you not want to compare him to Tim Curry and instead let both performances speak for themselves. Honestly I felt cheated by not having him in the movie more.
-Loved the scene in the house and thought it was very suspenseful.
The Bad:
-This movie had some terrible CGI in it, especially with Pennywise. There is also one shot that was repeated over and over again(a CG Pennywise coming towards the camera while the camera shakes) to the point that if you made it a drinking game, you would be drunk before the movie was over. Him showing his teeth also looked incredibly fake. The CGI when Pennywise attacks Georgie is awful as well.
-They tried too hard to make the kids funny and give them witty dialogue to the point that none of it felt natural, and it became distracting. I was also distracted by the kid who plays Bill because he literally looks like Dane Dehane.
-Sine it took place in the 80's I agree that Pennywise's other forms just being generic seemed out of place. Seeing Freddy or Jason would have been a fun nod and made sense in the context of the story.
-The finale is awful. Like really awful and doesn't feel satisfying at all. It's just bad. and the defeat of Pennywise couldn't have been more lame if they tried.
-I would have liked it to be a little shorter. By the end of the movie, it just felt somewhat overly long and it starts to drag.
Overall I would give it a 4/5. I liked it and enjoyed it but something about it makes it feel forgettable as well. It just feels very by the numbers however a strong performance by Skarsgard, and some entertaining moments make it worth a watch.
