Disney's Aladdin (2019, D: Ritchie) S: Will Smith, Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott

Disney's Live-Action 'Aladdin' Enlists Guy Ritchie to Direct
John August wrote the script for the live-action version, which sources say will keep many of the musical elements of the original.
Guy Ritchie, the stylistic director behind the Robert Downey Jr-starring Sherlock Holmes movies, is in negotiations to helm Disney’s live-action adaptation of its 1992 animated classic, Aladdin.
Dan Lin, who was a producer on the Holmes movies for Warner Bros., is producing what the studio will be an ambitious and non-traditional take on Aladdin via his Lin Pictures banner.
The 1992 movie was part of Disney’s animation renaissance and retold the classic Middle Eastern-set folk tale of a young man granted three wishes by a genie trapped in a lamp and the evil sorcerer who covets the magical object.
The genie was voiced by Robin Williams, who won audiences over with his unrestrained performance, making Aladdin the highest-grossing film of the year. The movie also won Oscars for best score and best song, the latter for A Whole New World, one of the movie’s six songs.
The movie launched a small Aladdin franchise for the studio and it was in recent years translated to the stage.
John August wrote the script for the live-action version which sources say will keep many of the musical elements of the original. Still to be determined is the approach to the Genie, which to this day remains closely associated to Williams' singular and defining performance. Also, part of the non-traditional aspect of the project is the studio's intent to make it non-linear, a move right out of the Ritchie playbook.
Ritchie made his name directing snappy crime thrillers such as Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch that used that kind of storytelling. He last directed The Man from UNCLE and is in post on King Arthur, Warners’ upcoming take on the Camelot legend.
He is repped by CAA.

And with this, Disney is creatively and artistically bankrupt. Now holding out for a live action Robin Hood.

The animated stuff they've put out in the last decade has been excellent. I don't see any issues with the live action stuff they've been doing, despite the mixed bag in quality, since it's just another retelling of stories that weren't original to begin with.

I guess I should have said their live stuff. Nothing original, they just want to bank on every animated property they've done. It's beyond dumb.

As much as I'm not a huge fan of it, is it dumb? Maybe doing a sequel off the live action (like Alice) is dumb. But just doing a one off of the stories does, in fact, make money, especially with a good cast. Hell, even with a so-so cast, Cinderella made half a billion so it isn't dumb in the slightest.

Plus since they already own the IPs, it makes a lot of financial sense as well.
Jungle Book was the only one of these I thought was any good, but they all make money.

I thought Cinderella was really good. Haven't cared for a lot of their other stuff.
It's not hard to see why Disney is going this route given the success with them though, especially since their other live action movies seem to have bombed pretty big lately.

He might have been.
My hate-to-say-it-out-loud-but-worried-I-may-be-right prediction for the Genie casting : Kevin Hart.

Shame on me for thinking Guy Ritchie had a bright future after LSATSB and Snatch.

If they can actually cast a majority Persian cast I'll be amazed. Good choice for director.

I have a hard time picturing this for some reason. I'm not sure how well a live action Genie character is going to translate. I generally like Disney but all these animated classics to live action films announcements are getting a bit old.

Robin Williams was the pulse of the animated film. Without him, Disney is left hanging. This movie is dead on arrival.

Except that they were quite open about having the exact same problem when adapting the movie to Broadway, and appeared to have succeeded. Translating to a live action movie will be a similar hurdle, but they already know a good amount about what can be tweaked.

Not to mention how loved the show was at Disney California Adventure and kept sticking around for years.

Why not use the money and create another hand drawn animation movie?
I don't think they have done one since the Princess and the Frog.
