1st Viewing = first time viewing [152 total, 85%]
Theme = theme day item [130 movies, 73%, watched according to theme]
Subset = subset film [100% subset films watched]

September 30 [Criterion Challenge Crossover theme night] (2 hours, 31 minutes watched)
01. Carnival of Souls [Theatrical cut] (1962, 78 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ Despite some slow pacing I love the creepy imagery and 'twist' in Carnival of Souls the organ score is perfect and helps maintain a sense of ethereal paranoia. Format: Streaming [Hulu]. Theme Subset
02. Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (1970, 73 minutes) ★★★★½✰✰✰✰✰ I enjoyed Valerie before so maybe I just wasn't in the mood for something so surreal but this time it seemed to drag despite some cool imagery and tone. Format: Streaming [Hulu]. Theme

October 1 [Bigfoot or Small Creatures theme night] (4 hours, 35 minutes watched)
03. Night of the Demon [uncut] (1980, 92 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ There's a lot happening in this film - campfire stories, slasher staples, bigfoot, cults, etc and despite some zaniness and dated music it never gets past 'mediocre.' I did like the last third more. Format: Streaming [Youtube]. 1st Viewing Theme Subset
04. Blood Beach (1980, 92 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ much better than I expected with a great concept that makes good use of Burt Young and John Saxon and has an ironic beach horror theme with good 80s vibe. Format: Streaming [Youtube]. 1st Viewing
05. Killer Fish (1979, 101 minutes) ★★★½✰✰✰✰✰✰ An ambitious heist movie that ultimately feels too over long and slow with a disappointing under use of killer fish. Format: Blu-ray. Theme
06. Houses That October Built (2014, 91 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Obnoxious characters and shaky cam haunted house emulation provide an interesting context for meta horror that tries to mystify 'haunted house' attractions in a clever way, it feels like there's more substance than the thin characters of attempts at visceral 'scares' immediately show. Format: Blu-ray. First time

October 2 [Hotel theme night] (6 hours, 21 minutes watched)
07. Hotel Fear [aka Pensione Paura] (1977, 96 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ Moody and dramatic for much of it's run time with some over the top characters making the film feel like a dark comedy at times and a giallo others; things come together in the last third and it successfully balances a hodge podge of different genres to surreal effect. Format: Streaming [Youtube]. 1st Viewing Theme
08. The Strange Hostel of Naked Pleasures [aka A Estranha Hospedaria dos Prazeres] (1976, 81 minutes) ★✰✰✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ Oddly psychadelic fluff fills much of the playtime, with the first third being unstructured pretentious philosophy musings and the rest being barely an idea stretched way too thin and blandly executed... Format: Streaming [Youtube]. 1st Viewing Theme
09. Hotel Transylvania (2012, 91 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ A spirited family film with lots of monster action and a nice party vibe. Format: Streaming [Ultraviolet]. Theme
10. The Happiness of the Katakuris (2001, 113 minutes) ★★★★★★★½✰✰ Relentlessly creativity, aimless in parts and at times too over the top but the kinetic antics kept things moving nicely. Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing Theme Subset

October 3 [RIP Christopher Lee theme night] (9 hours, 33 minutes watched)
11. The Wicker Man [The Final Cut] (1975, 91 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ Maintains an eerie cult atmosphere and has a nice twist - some of the religious commentary seems played for shocks and pagan stuff over blow, it works but seems over-rated as a cult classic. Format: Blu-ray. Theme Subset
12. Horror Express (1973, 91 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ Better than I expected with an awesomely cheesy monster and cool train setting, horror legends Lee and Crushing seem more subdued but a lot of fun with unexpected gore. Format: Blu-ray. Theme Subset
13. Hotel Transylvania 2 (2015, 89 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ Better than the first with less kinetic musical flow and more musings about how classic horror tropes fail in modern settings including a fun vampire showdown. Format: Theatrical. 1st Viewing
14. Dr Terror's House of Horrors (1965, 98 minutes) ★★★★½✰✰✰✰✰ Varied anthology series with bleak vibe but some stories feel abrupt and some ironic twists pail compared to other 'tales from the crypt' style stuff Format: Streaming [Amazon]. 1st Viewing Theme Subset
15. Dark Shadows (2012, 113 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Not familiar with the soap opera I enjoyed the gothic horror and humor mix but it stumbled biting off more than it could digest including a corporate takeover that seems to go nowhere and a villian showdown that feels too matter of fact. Epic Alice Cooper cameo still doesn't justify some of the loose ends. Format: Streaming [Ultraviolet]. 1st Viewing Theme
16. Howling II (1986, 91 minutes) ★½✰✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ Despite some cool ideas poor production values and sporadic editing make it a pain to sit through Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing Theme

October 4 [Television Movie / Mini-series theme night] (5 hours, 48 minutes watched)
17. Creature [Night 1] (1988, 90 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ Mostly build-up setting up a far fetched premise but hit some nostalgic notes with me with it's 1990s style flare. Slower paced, but most TV miniseries come with some fluff. Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing Theme
18. Creature [Night 2] (1988, 88 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ Part 2 hits the ground running with more action and better showcasing the epic practical effects creature; some of the plot reveals seem abrupt but otherwise I enjoyed it. Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing Theme
19. Cast a Deadly Spell (1991, 96 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ Zany with enjoyable special effects and a fun 'noir' feel but the elsewheres magic filled 1940s and instance on somehow claiming the lead IS Lovecraft feels odd. Format: Streaming [Youtube]. 1st Viewing Theme
20. Bad Ronald (1974, 74 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ The general premise is really creepy but there's so much set-up maneuvering to get there that it feels awkward. They did a good job of making a sympathetic villain pulling in low key humor and horror elements. Format: Streaming [Daily Motion]. 1st Viewing Theme Subset

October 5 [Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, or Transgender theme night] (8 hours, 23 minutes watched)
21. Zombies of Mass Destruction (2010, 89 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ Some awkward commentary, especially early on, I can't tell if I appreciate it's attempt to be more relevent or found it preachy and slightly dated. Ultimately there was liberal amounts of fake blood and the film seemed to get funnier as it progressed. Format: Streaming [Ultraviolet HDX]. 1st Viewing Theme Subset
22. Sleepaway Camp II (1988, 80 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Credit for following a wild twist from the first and handles things with some humor, much more transparent that typical slashers. Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing Theme
23. The Last Horror Show (1982, 87 minutes) ★★★★★★★★✰✰ Brilliant meta horror with sharp commentary on celebrity glitz and some fun humor that works well. Format: Streaming [Youtube]. 1st Viewing
24. Creep (2014, 82 minutes) ★★★½✰✰✰✰✰✰ An ambitious premise staggering between awkward social comedy and malicious taunts feels too inconsistent with some baffling plot that targets dark humor more than horror and falls a little flat. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing
25. The Pit and The Pendulum (1961, 80 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ Great gothic 'victorian' feel with atmospheric setting and a suspenseful mystery. Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing
26. Parasite (1982, 85 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ Randomly picked this off Youtube but found it really enjoyable, out there enough to be fun despite a lot of cheesiness. Format: Streaming [Youtube]. 1st Viewing

October 6 [Snow theme night] (6 hours, 22 minutes watched)
27. Cold Prey [aka Fritt Vilt] (2006, 97 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ Once the necessary setup gets over with Cold Prey is nicely suspenseful with good character development and a mysterious adversary set in an atmospheric snowscape. Format: Streaming [Youtube]. Theme Subset
28. Dead Snow 2: Red Vs Dead (2014, 100 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ An absurd comedy filled with over the top kinetic gags to the point of near collapse; much better than the over rated crap that the first installment was (1 gave too little to late). I enjoyed Dead Snow 2 more than I expected. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing Theme
29. Seizure (1974, 94 minutes) ★★★½✰✰✰✰✰✰ Despite some potentially cool surreal villains the execution didn't feel suspenseful and while I wanted to like some of the plot it didn't hold together well, it seemed to adventure oriented without enough thrills or intensity. Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing
30. Wendingo (2002, 91 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ Different than I expected, more subtle. I liked the native american vibe and odd unstructured paranoia plot. Filled with too much stop motion and too little plot it might not be for everyone but what moodiness. Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing Theme

October 7 [Based On a Book theme night] (11 hours, 49 minutes watched)
31. The Mist (2007, 126 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰ Over rated but still an atmospheric movie with strange imagery and good tension. The religious extremism subplot drags the film because it pushes too far and I think the ending is inconsistent to the point of blunting the film. Format: Blu-ray. Theme Subset
32. The Slayer (1982, 80 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ Like an amped up episode of Twilight Zone combining a surreal sci fi style plot with slasher tropes, lulls a little in the middle but overall good. Format: Streaming [Youtube]. 1st Viewing
33. The Curse (1987, 92 minutes) ★★★★★★★★✰✰ A stand out so far this challenge with an abstract plot and bizzare imagery. Format: Streaming [Youtube]. 1st Viewing Theme
34. Lord of Illusion [Director's Cut] (1995, 121 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ A personal favorite of mine; the fantasy tale of 'magicians, etc' is ethereal with nice noir elements and an unconventional plot. Format: Blu-ray. Theme
35. The Squad (2011, 102 minutes) ★★✰✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ Argentinian soldiers run around an empty building arguing with one another feels like a poor man's Dog Soldiers, Outpost, etc with less of a hook. The plot is ambitious trying to balance paranoia but it too subtle with such limited basis it falls flat; it could have benefited from a shorter tighter run time.Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing
36. Whisperer In Darkness (2011, 103 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ Some questionable acting and not as good as Call of Cthulhu but has a nice sense of mystery with early technology man looking into on the otherworldly. Does a good job showing Lovecraft imagery on a low budget without looking cheesy. Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing Theme
37. The Shrine (2011, 85 minutes) ★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ Some scary imagery breaks up the poor acting and questionable character motivation; the ending is interesting if you are looking for a b indie film with all it's low budget flaws. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing Theme

October 8 [Featuring Eyes theme night] (11 hours, 48 minutes watched)
38. Starry Eyes (2014, 98 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰ Depends too much on a histrionic and flawed main character that is hard to sympathize with, and some of the implied criticism of 'hollywood' seems strange since seemingly most people can't relate - there's some nice gore and the premise hints at something cooler than is shown here. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing Theme
39. The Editor (2014, 95 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ Amped up hyper stylized giallo with meta awareness interweaving plot and 'film within the film' elements; sometimes over the top, occasionally poorly acted, and some humor is hit/miss but overall fun. Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing Theme
40. Morituris: Legions of the Dead (2011, 86 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Weirdly mean spirited in a sort of torture porn backwoods slasher way, I liked that some of it pushed the envelope more even if it was too bleak at times. Feels like two movies because it shifts focus mid-film, but that happens in a way I think questions some genre conventions by showing degrees of 'evil' - not sure if that's reading too much into it. Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing
41. Lost After Dark (2014, 85 minutes) ★★★★½✰✰✰✰✰ Too straight forward to be as interesting with a villain that feels more like a shadow of better slasher staples; cute in it's homage to 80s horror with some cool cartoonish imagery (stranded schoolbus) but doesn't like up to it's predecessor in part because it seems too self aware to be convincingly thrilling and because it takes a while to get to the 'good stuff'. Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing
42. The Ruins (2008, 90 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ Follows with the book well (but changed the ending) to present a novel plot in a relentless and tight manner. I wanted a film that wasn't as visually dark and this delivers some great scenes.Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing
43. V/H/S Viral (2014, 81 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰ It's like they just discovered video filters and had to try them all - otherwise not as strong as prior entries but still fun... nothing really excels and several segments feel subpar relaying too much on unlikeable characters or twists that aren't chilling. Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing
44. Eyes Without a Face (1962, 90 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Offer some interesting themes with an unconventional plot and some ghastly surgical scenes but otherwise falls flat when it tries to be a more conventional thriller. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. Theme Subset
45. Scarecrows (1988, 83 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ Much better than one would expect with some gruesome twists on slasher tropes and a go for broke bank heist paramilitary paranoia thriller that doesn't pull any punches - schlocky fun. Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing

October 9 [Zombie theme night] (13 hours, 36 minutes watched)
46. Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead (2014, 98 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ Filled with morbid zaniness and some silly over the top plot points that work in such a kinetic environment. There's a lot of spaghetti western style eye/face closeups and a lot of staged action choreography and it's so absurd and high spirited everything works. Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing Theme Subset
47.. Zombeavers (2015, 77 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰ Slow and corny for much of it's run time the epic last third makes it worth seeing. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing Theme
48. Raw Force [aka Kung Fu Cannibals] (1982, 86 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ A fantasy adventure winner filled with all assortments of creepy mons, kung fu, boobs, firefights, zombies, pirates, etc; an unbelievable but effective hodge podge of stuff. Format: Blu-ray 1st Viewing Theme
49. Burying the Ex (2014, 89 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ Fun horror comedy that's got less 'frat humor' and more retro horror references with more romantic comedy elements. Format: Blu-ray 1st Viewing Theme
50. The Battery (2012, 101 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ Unconventional zombie film with aimless moodiness that goes on for perhaps too long but has some interesting twists and well developed characters with a dramatic tone. Format: Blu-ray 1st Viewing Subset
51. Unfriended (2014, 83 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰ Ultimately more straight forward than I expected despite occurring entirely in a chat/skype setting, a cute idea with interesting focus on social dynamics but not as scary as it could have been. Format: Streaming [Ultraviolet HDX] 1st Viewing
52. Under the Bed (2013, 87 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Atmospheric playing on childhood fears with an action adventure vibe that works despite some awkward 'family drama' subplots. Format: Blu-ray 1st Viewing
53. Sugar Hill (1974, 91 minutes) ★★✰✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ Disappointing given it's reputation, it seemed uninteresting and despite zombies too matter a fact in being a revenge movie without as much style as I'd hoped for... mostly camp. Format: Blu-ray 1st Viewing Theme
54. The Harvest (2013, 104 minutes) ★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ Predictable with uneven acting and some unbelievable over the top elements. Format: Blu-ray 1st Viewing Theme

October 10 [European theme night] (4 hours, 34 minutes watched)
55. House By the Cemetery (1984, 87 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰ Slow paced saved only by some effective gore, not one of Fulchi's best. Format: Streaming [Hulu] Theme Subset
56. Black Sunday (1960, 87 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Atmospheric and moody Format: Bu-ray Theme
57. Daughters of Darkness (1971, 100 minutes) ★★★★★★★★✰✰ A personal favorite, slow burn vampire film with some complexity. Format: Blu-ray Theme Subset

October 11 [Wes Craven theme night] (6 hours, 59 minutes watched)
58. Last House on the Left (1974, 84 minutes) ★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ Mean spirited with odd comedy elements and few scenes that really feel intense; ultimately falls flat, it doesn't seem that ironic or interesting and seems to miss opportunities at subtext. Format: Streaming [Youtube] 1st Viewing Theme
59. The Mummy's Hand (1940, 67 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Effective character actors help this one along, possibly better than the first - which didn't strike me. Format: DVD 1st Viewing
60. Vampire In Brooklyn (1995, 100 minutes) ★★★½✰✰✰✰✰✰ Eddie Murphy walks around with a horribly fake accent trying to be scary, credit for trying to update the Vampire mytho but it doesn't really work here (Dracula 2000 was better). Format: Streaming [Netflix] 1st Viewing Theme
61. House of Frankenstein (1944, 71 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ All over the place and feels like it tries to cram too much into a short run time. Format: DVD
62. Cursed [Theatrical] (2005, 97minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ One of Craven's better more recent films despite spotty CGI and some cringeworthy scenes. It's got some clever homages and nice action scenes. Format: Blu-ray Theme

October 12 [1990/1965 Anniversary theme night] (13 hours, 24 minutes watched)
63. Housebound (2014, 107 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ Zany film that moves from one premise to another with a subtle british comedy. Format: Streaming [Netflix] 1st Viewing
64. The Canal (2014, 92 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ Gritty movie with nice hallucinatory imagery and several twists; surprisingly good. Format: Streaming [Netflix] 1st Viewing
65. Shocker (1989, 110 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ Fast paced but sometimes hammy and too over the top with a great villain and some cool imagery. Dumb fun.Format: Blu-ray 1st Viewing
66. Nightbreed [Director's Cut] (1990, 120 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ Nice mix of fantasy and horror with some great action scenes, some of the flaws were more obvious in my second viewing. Format: Blu-ray Theme Subset
67. Living Doll (1990, 94 minutes) ★★★½✰✰✰✰✰✰ Bleak and moody with a dated 90s style and some weirdness (random old lady landlords), creepy but illogical and I've seem better similar films. Format: DVD 1st Viewing Theme
68. Them [aka Ils] (2006, 77 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰ Not as tense as I'd hoped (maybe I'm jaded), I liked the ending but otherwise average. Format: Streaming [Hulu] 1st Viewing Theme
69. Repulsion (1965, 105 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ A classic with great imagery and subtle tension. Format: Blu-ray Theme
70. The First Power (1990, 99 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ Good blend of noir police procedural and mystical satanic antics that was better than I expected with a fast pacing and over the top plot. Format: Blu-ray 1st Viewing Theme

October 12 [Attics/Basements theme night] (10 hours, 28 minutes watched)
71. Superstition (1982, 85 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ The trailer is a letdown but Superstition is a 'go for broke' witch film with slasher elements and some amusing historical footage; just the right amount of cheesy and gorey.Format: Streaming [Youtube] 1st Viewing Theme
72. As Above So Below (2014, 93 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰ I'd hear mixed things about it but really enjoyed it myself, it felt fresh and while some moments were too 'tomb raider' adventure game-y it had likeable characters, good twists, an epic setting, and nice imagery... also I really liked the ending. Format: Streaming [Ultraviolet HDX] 1st Viewing
73. The Babdook (2014, 93 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰ Compelling acting with an unusual premise and great stagings sell this well. Format: Blu-ray 1st Viewing Theme Subset
74. Nomads (1986, 93 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ Horrible fake accents and random musical flashbacks be damned, Nomads has a clever concept that works despite the unusual editing and story structure. Format: Blu-ray 1st Viewing
75. Catacombs (1988, 84 minutes) ★★✰✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ Horribly boring filled with odd debate on fake monastary practices then fumbles delivering too little too late. Format: Blu-ray 1st Viewing
76. The Drownsman (2014, 88 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ Creative premise allowing for unusual staging and tension; some efforts to over explain things are awkward and it's got overly dark scenes that are distracting but pretty great for a lower budget horror film even if it occasionally seems like the musical cues are overselling scenes let down by lower production values. Format: Blu-ray 1st Viewing
77. Idle Hands (1999, 92 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Cartoonish comedy that takes horror to outlandish levels with hit and miss results; has some cool cartoonish cinematography but the 'stoner comedy' feels pretentious and drags the films down some. Format: Blu-ray Subset

October 14 [Police theme night] (5 hours, 39 minutes watched)
78. Psycho Cop (1989, 87 minutes) ★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ Aimless slasher film salvaged some by a cool villain with creepy acting, has a nostalgic late night 90s tv feel but otherwise not great. Format: Streaming [Youtube] 1st Viewing Theme
79. Psycho Cop Returns (1993, 85 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰ More interesting setting than the first with better pacing even if Psycho Cop doesn't seem as creepy here; really cheesy with dated sexism, all the female characters are literally strippers, and there are more awful one liners. Format: Streaming [Youtube] 1st Viewing Theme
80. Wolf Cop (2014, 79 minutes) ★✰✰✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ Lacking bravado action or witty homage that you would expect from a title like this it slumps into an awkward invented mythology and seems to bask in the most shallow representation of having a werewolf cop (which is not necessarily any funnier than a werewolf in any other profession). Format: Blu-ray 1st Viewing Theme
81. Hospital of Terror [aka Nurse Sherri] (1978, 88 minutes) ★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ Surreal low grade production mixing possession and light exploitation elements with awful effects and inconsistent acting; a 70s time capsule but all the actors seem zonked out and they sure do spend a lot of time talking in hallways - Nurse Sherri does good crazy eyes. Format: Streaming [Youtube] 1st Viewing

October 15 [Anthology theme night] (6 hours, 6 minutes watched)
82. Screamtime (1986, 89 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Anthology series with sly British humor mixed with traditional horror gags to surprisingly good effect resulting in some stuff that's simultaneously cheesy and effectively creepy. Format: Streaming [Youtube] 1st Viewing Theme Subset
83. Dead Girls (2014, 91 minutes) ★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ Has a indie feel to it and while segments are lukewarm at best it gets points for feeling more surreal in it's low budget charm. Format: Streaming [Youtube] 1st Viewing Theme
84. The Vault of Horror [Uncut] (1973, 87 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ Nicely varied stories with devious twists, this variety of moral tale schlock needs to make a comeback. By today's standards it feels more muted (especially given how relatively amped up the HBO Tales From the Crypt stuff was] but it hit the right notes with me. Format: Blu-ray 1st Viewing Theme
85. From a Whisper To a Scream [aka The Offspring] (1987, 99 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ Weaker wraparound segment but some nicely intense scenes with unexpectedly gory imagery. Format: Blu-ray 1st Viewing Theme

October 16 [Crazy Love theme night] (7 hours, 26 minutes watched)
86. Don't Panic (1988, 90 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰ Ackward adult child actor contributes to some 'so bad it's good' moments and the makers seem set on embeding religious parallels into their plot; not horrible but unoriginal and needed better actors. Format: Streaming [Youtube] 1st Viewing Theme
87. Next of Kin (1982, 89 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ Slow burn with a surreal atmosphere that doesn't have much of a "hook" early on but has a rewarding payoff, conducted with some artsy style that works. Format: Streaming [Youtube] 1st Viewing
88. Honeymoon (2014, 87 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Really slow with characters that don't seem to have much chemistry and a strangely horny one dimensional male lead that redeems itself with a masterful ending although some might find it too little too late. Format: Streaming [Netflix] 1st Viewing Theme
89. The Taking of Deborah Logan (2014, 90 minutes) ★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ Overly ambitious trying really hard to throw a bunch of stuff at the viewer; some moments are killed by characters awkwardly trying to cuss out threats - mediocre. Format: Streaming [Netflix] 1st Viewing Theme
90. Last Shift (2014, 90 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰ Lead actor could use better acting and this film seems to just throw mid-grade production 'scary' images one after another to a fault. Format: DVD [Redbox] 1st Viewing

October 17 [Vestron Video theme night] (4 hours, 14 minutes watched)
91. Rocktober Blood (1988, 90 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰ Filled with a musical soundtrack and some nicely dated 80s scenery it lulls in the middle and has an ending that doesn't make a lot of sense; I found better than it deserves to be thanks to some nostalgic appreciation for it's cheesiness. Format: Streaming [Youtube] 1st Viewing Theme
92. Manos: The Hands of Fate (1966, 74 minutes) ★★✰✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ An odd mix of incompetence and stage presence with an overly wordy script that I can see the 'so bad it's good' cult appear for but other than as a party movie not great. Format: Blu-ray 1st Viewing
93. Sweet Sixteen (1983, 90 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰ A hillbilly whodunnit that explores prejudice with a telegraphed ending. Format: Blu-ray Theme

October 18 [Church Setting theme night] (7 hours, 52 minutes watched)
94. Don't Deliver Us From Evil (1971, 102 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Mean spirited but artistic that seems to push viewers into exploring the dark wild fantasies of needy young girls who push the limits of plausibility, overlong in parts. Format: Streaming [Youtube] 1st Viewing Theme
95. Scooby-Doo! and Kiss: Rock and Roll Mystery (2015, 72 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ I'm not a fan of Kiss' odd self promotion but this was a lot of fun with zany cartoon antics some of which were surprisingly psychadelic and amped up the expected Scooby Doo format nicely. Format: DVD [Redbox] 1st Viewing Theme
96. Rawhead Rex (1986, 89 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ Despite the dated effects there's enough of the unexpected and a unique enough villain that it comes together nicely at the conclusion. Format: Streaming [Youtube] 1st Viewing Theme
97. Omen IV: The Awakening (1991, 100 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰ Plays to immediately into the 'this kid is just so evil because of other movies' business that it doesn't set things up well enough and just piles on the body count in an oddly subdued manner focusing more on just death as being scary without building suspense enough until near the middle, probably better than any 4th sequel deserves to be if still not great. Format: DVD Theme
98. Stigmata (1999, 109 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Preachy to a fault but with some nice gore effects and a music video style stage setting that is sometimes unintentionally funny - works on some levels but that defies explanation. Format: Blu-ray Theme

October 19 [School Setting theme night] (7 hours, 35 minutes watched)
99. Death Bell (2008, 88 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ Odd mix of supernatural and mild torture porn about kids locked in a school with an adversary, nicely executed but confusing in spots. Format: Streaming [Youtube] 1st Viewing Theme
100. Death Bell 2: Bloody Camp (2010, 90 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ More streamlined than the original with darker settings, despite some plot holes it's fun and seems to exist mostly to justify different scenarios. Format: Streaming [Youtube] 1st Viewing Theme
101. Murderlust (1985, 88 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Killer's perspective thriller with an interesting mix of mundane and murder from a charismatic lead and a some amusingly stereotypical killer tropes that, paired with the ironic self awareness of knowing the killer, give it a slight comedic familiar vibe (windowless van, garbage cans, unassuming public persona, etc). There's some amateurish acting in spots and many killings are off camera but that gives it a strange dated 'made for tv' type of feel. Format: Streaming [Youtube] 1st Viewing
102. Ring of Curse (2011, 94 minutes) ★★★½✰✰✰✰✰✰ 'Japanese pop' is the perfect way to describe it; it's a slightly bloodier Goosebumps style teenie bopper horror spin on 'The Ring' - not good, but not horrible. It doesn't add much new to the 'ringu' sub-genre (if there is such a thing) but does have an unusual plot structure.. Format: Streaming [Netflix] Theme
103. Dance of the Dead (2008, 95 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ Fun character centered horror comedy with energetic zombies and some over the top hit or miss sight gags, some of the effects look cheaper than I remember. Format: Streaming [Ultraviolet HDX] Theme Subset

October 20 [Vampire theme night] (5 hours, 10 minutes watched)
104. A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night (2014, 107 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ Slow and aimless but with good visual artistry infused with musical score, occasionally borders on pretentious but uniquely surreal. Format: Streaming [Netflix] 1st Viewing Theme Subset
105. Byzantium (2012, 118 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ Moody mix of historical epic and action that sometimes feels overlong in historical aspects and sometimes feels like a poor man's Interview With A Vampire but comes together for a nicely tense conclusion. Format: Streaming [Netflix] 1st Viewing Theme
106. Hannah, Quest of Vampires [aka Crypt of the Living Dead] (1973, 85 minutes) ★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ Tries really hard to convince the viewed that a sleeping woman is some horrific fiend focusing too much on establishing a lore background that falls flat. Format: Blu-ray 1st Viewing Theme

October 21 [Library/Book theme night] (7 hours, 27 minutes watched)
107. Djinn (2013, 82 minutes) ★★✰✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ Filled with cringeworthy awkward set up so even some of it's more average scenes suffer for it; a good portion of the introduction goes into explaining some 'logic' of how the characters end up in an laughable isolated middle desert skyscraper. The Djinn and middle eastern themes are ripe with potential but this movie falls flat with plot holes, lame design, and predictable ending. Format: Streaming [Netflix] 1st Viewing
108. Stones of Death [aka Kadaicha] (1988, 88 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰ Played straight forward enough the aboriginal horror isn't scary and it dances with some promising themes but the script feels overly familiar from other movies reaching beyond it's means so ends up more a cheesy ripoff maybe more interesting for it's cloning of other films that on it's own merits. Everything seems so Australian.Format: Streaming [Youtube] 1st Viewing Theme
109. The Incubus (1982, 93 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ Surprisingly good supernatural thriller with a nicely mysterious killer that maintains mystery for much of it's run time, have brutal kills (albeit some off screen), and Cassavates really sells it. Format: Straming [Youtube] Theme Subset
110. In the Mouth of Madness (1994, 95 minutes) ★★★★★★★½✰✰ A near masterpiece with far out otherworldly elements and a very surreal dark tone. Format: Blu-ray Theme Subset
111. I Madman (1989, 89 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ Much better than I expected with a nicely morbid cartoonish style and the killer is a standout so far this challenge. Format: Blu-ray 1st Viewing Theme

October 22 [Theater theme night] (4 hours, 27 minutes watched)
112. Ruby (1977, 85 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ Atmospheric movie drive-in on the edge of a swap serves as the backdrop for this mobster supernatural thriller; there's a lot going on here and it's zany yet subtle enough that it works with some morbid slasher elements and a quacky parapsychologist Format: Streaming [Youtube] 1st Viewing Theme
113. Terror In the Aisles (1977, 82 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Better than I'd expect a clip show to be thanks in part to Donald Pleasence overly dramatic narration, many scenes don't make a lot of sense out of context but works as a braindead cultural slideshow. Format: Blu-ray 1st Viewing Theme Subset
114. Invaders From Mars (1986, 100 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Nicely over the top effects with a kids' fantasy angle and fun military siege imagery; I liked it better than expected. Format: Blu-ray

October 23 [Sideshow/Carnival theme night] (6 hours, 23 minutes watched)
[Baby face masked killer double feature]
115. Dark Ride (2006, 94 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Better than I expected stealing elements from more popular movies with a too slow middle section but slowly builds intensity. Format: Streaming [Ultraviolet HDX] 1st Viewing Theme
116. Hills Run Red (2009, 82 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ Dark slasher that's self aware in a good way and maintains intensity throughout with an unusual plot and enough twists to keep people hooked. Format: Streaming [Ultraviolet HDX] Theme
117. Crimson Peak (2015, 119 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Pretentiously decorated with predictable elements but enough of it comes together to be good delivering some irony combined with some of the imagery that is effective to compel an interesting conclusion; if Del Toro could be more subtle this could have been better. Format: Theatrical 1st Viewing Theme
118. House of Wax (1953, 88 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ Vincent Price sells the movie well supported by cavernous settings and a morbid premise, I like this remake better than the original. Format: Streaming [Daily Motion] 1st Viewing Theme Subset

October 24 [Double Feature theme night] (3 hours, 58 minutes watched)
119. Frankenstein 1970 (1958, 83 minutes) ★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ Uneventful with some promising ideas that never go anywhere; Karloff is good here. Format: Streaming [Thanks to Alyxstar] 1st Viewing Theme Subset
120. The Terror (1963, 81 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰ Jumps the shark with stretched gimmicks and while it's nicely mysterious for much of it's timeframe it over explains in an attempts to give an ironic ending but that's too forced. Format: Streaming [Youtube] 1st Viewing Theme Subset
121. Scooby Doo! Frankencreepy (2014, 74 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰ Filled with homages to classic Scooby Door but stumbles with awkwardly positioning each character into overly detailed references that don't quit work despite lending silly imagery.Format: Streaming [Ultraviolet HDX]

October 25 [Vs/Internet/Tree/Detective/Whatever theme night] (9 hours, 47 minutes watched)
122. Dead Within (2014, 91 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ A gem that blends psychological and zombie tropes effectively playing out in a claustrophobic setting with a paranoid and otherworldly feel. Format: Streaming [Netflix] 1st Viewing
123. Circle (2015, 87 minutes) ★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰ More preachy than it is socially conscious forcing a social metaphor thought experiment with some tension but also a whole lot of talking debate. Format: Streaming [Netflix] 1st Viewing
124. Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948, 83 minutes) ★★★★½✰✰✰✰✰ Not much of a Costello or slapstick fan, the monsters are played with nice seriousness and Lon Chaney excels here but it's more silly than I'd prefer Format: Streaming [Netflix] Theme Subset
125. Jaws (1975, 130 minutes) ★★★★★★★½✰✰ A classic, one of the few that lives up to it's reputation. Format: Streaming [Ultraviolet HDX]
126. Little Shop of Horrors [Director's Cut] (1986, 102 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ A personal favorite, the evil plant is wild and comedy far out enough that the musical makes it all work. The director's cut ending is much superior. Format: Blu-ray 1st Viewing Theme
127. Nightmare Weekend (1986, 94 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰ Slow despite being crammed with 80s style and generous nudity, tries too hard in parts to be weird with sparse intensity until near the end... not a 'so bad it's good' film but just a braindead flop. Format: Blu-ray Theme

October 26 [Slasher/Giallo/Killer theme night] (13 hours, 31 minutes watched)
128. Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil (2010, 89 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ Effective character actors carry this, mostly played for gags with some romantic comedy thrown in. Format: Streaming [Netflix] Theme
129. The Cottage (2008, 92 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ Gory slapstick dark comedy slasher that blends genres well with macabre humor.Format: Streaming [Ultraviolet HDX] Theme
130. Lady Stay Dead (1981, 92 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ More visual than wordy often accompanied by dated brooding elevator music to surreal effect giving a voyeuristic feel (the limited dialogue adds a 'third person' vibe and interspersed nudity/torture a strange leering quality). Format: Blu-ray 1st Viewing Theme
131. Stripped to Kill (1987, 88 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ More dramatic than expected with an odd commitment to stripper footage/routines, predictable killer. Format: Blu-ray 1st Viewing Theme
132. High Lane [aka Vertige] (2009, 90 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ Fantastic setting and camera work give a tense feeling of being stuck at high elevations with some unique tactics (audio only scenes) that work well. Much better than I expected. Format: Streaming [Netflix] 1st Viewing Theme
[Moral Rage double feature]
133. Candle of the Devil [aka It Happened At Nightmare Inn] (1973, 90 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ Interesting killers with good pacing and the setting is nicely subdued with occasional standout imagery. Handles explaining the motivation well without being too extreme and has a really great unusual ending. Format: Blu-ray 1st Viewing Theme
134. Prom Night IV: Delivery Us From Evil (1992, 92 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Epic killer with nice gore despite some slow segments and inferior/dark picture quality on DVD. Occasionally over the top in selling the victims but that helps establish the bad guy. Format: DVD 1st Viewing Theme
135. The Midnight Hour (1985, 94 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ Much better than expected with a wholesome family Halloween feel that's focused more on having fun than providing much substance. Format: Streaming [Youtube] 1st Viewing
136. We Are Still Here (2015, 84 minutes) ★★★★½✰✰✰✰✰ Inventive looking specters with chilling moments but skirts the line between effective and corny too often. Format: Blu-ray 1st Viewing

October 27 [Werewolf/Werecreature theme night] (14 hours, 9 minutes watched)
137. Late Phases (2014, 95 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ Better than I expected with well staged scenes and decent acting, one of the better modern werewolf movies I've seen but not without it's unintentionally funny flaws (some of the 'old people' stuff seems forced, guy casually walks around in bloody shirt for a day). Format: Streaming [Netflix] 1st Viewing Theme
[Ginger Snaps trilogy marathon]
138. Ginger Snaps (2000, 108 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ The menstrual parallels are clever but feel over the top... still a modern masterpiece with an excellent finale. Format: Blu-ray Theme
139. Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed (2004, 94 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ A decline in quality that ruins some of what was good about Ginger Snaps with some silly devices (like how the guidance counselor is too distracted smoking cigarettes) flirting with conventional, like 'troubled youth' subplot - especially weaker in the first third but gets better. Maintains a good focus on werewolf as a metaphor for sexuality but is less playful than the original with more jump scares and some inconsistent acting. Format: DVD 1st Viewing Theme
140. Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning (2004, 94 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰ Odd film recasting the actresses from the series in an not really connected frontier setting 1800s prequel, handles werewolves with less transparency and focuses more on overt paranoia and a fort under siege with some good imagery. Lacks the edge of the earlier films and dips too far into mysticism. Format: DVD 1st Viewing Theme
141. Black Sheep (2006, 87 minutes) ★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ Clever idea with some excellent practical effects but it's constant humor gets stale playing gags out for too long and yielding the stupidest ending ever. Format: DVD Theme Subset
142. Howling VII: New Moon Rising [with Joe Bob Briggs Monstervision interludes, 21 minutes] (1995, 90 minutes) ★✰✰✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ People sit around a country bar drinking and line dancing for 3/4ths of the movie then the werewolf part is butchered with odd fast forwarding, really horrible. Format: Streaming [Youtube] 1st Viewing Theme
143. In Fear (2013, 85 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Good indie film with a nice mysterious buildup and a creepy payoff, there are times it's obvious their budget wasn't ideal but overall very good considering. Format: Streaming [Netflix] 1st Viewing Theme
144. Curse of the Demon (1957, 83 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ Great special effects with a slow investigative approach that works. Format: Streaming [Ultraviolet HDX] 1st Viewing Theme
145. Mosquito (1995, 92 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Brain dead creature film with excellent effects and wild over exaggerated mosquitos, a fun movie. Format: Blu-ray 1st Viewing Theme

October 27 [Supernatural theme night] (12 hours, 12 minutes watched)
146. Let Us Prey (2014, 92 minutes) ★★★★★★★★✰✰ Might be my favorite first time viewing this month; it's a really great film with good imagery, an eerie vibe, and even some tense action style scenes. Often when films get so transparent over explaining or selling their twist it can be annoying, almost 'talking down' to the viewer but Let Us Prey rolls around in it full embracing it's reveal and kicking it up into a surreal frenzy that works beautifully. Format: Blu-ray 1st Viewing Theme
147. +1 (2013, 95 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ Energetic and colorful party based supernatural thriller that hit the spot with an abstract plot that gets brutal but stays intelligent. Format: Streaming [Netflix] 1st Viewing Theme
148. Insidious 3 (2015, 98 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Serviceable ghost/possession movie, I'm not sure I understand all the odd mythos building with Insidious - the older woman psychic doesn't seem like that interesting of a character and the "old woman" ghost has become really campy and lame; still the conventions worked well enough here as a standalone. Format: Streaming [Ultraviolet HDX] 1st Viewing Theme
149. The Den (2013, 81 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Potentially great online video themed horror movie with some intense scenes, some of the thrills didn't seem plausible but this was something different and much better than I expected. Format: Streaming [Netflix]
150. The Night Child (1975, 90 minutes) ★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ Disappointingly slow and slightly confusing, I think there's a lot of build up and dramatization but not much going on. Format: Blu-ray Theme
151. Stir of Echoes (1999, 99 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ Kevin Bacon leads with a nicely paranoid compulsive personality that helps this better than average ghost movie across it's blue collar setting in a tense and mysterious way. Format: Blu-ray Theme Subset
152. Neverlake (2013, 86 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Overly familiar at times with stale acting but eventually pulls things together with some interesting twists, predictable in places but at the end I liked it better than I expected to. Underwater ghosts sound ripe with possibility but this is short of ghastly events despite some interesting imagery. Format: Streaming [Netflix] Theme
153. Mortuary (1983, 91 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ Fun slasher with a cool... mortuary theme; wicked masked killer. Format: Blu-ray 1st Viewing

October 29 [Bats/Cats/Rats theme night] (12 hours, 50 minutes watched)
154. Call Girl of Cthulhu (2014, 92 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ In your face mix of low budget design, gore splatter, and Lovecraft antics; better than I expected with a good mix of low brow nudity and sex jokes combined with tentacle horror with really weird body horror splatter. This feels like vintage Henelotter. Format: Blu-ray 1st Viewing
155. Call Girl of Cthulhu[Commentary with Producers] (2014, 92 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰ Later in a marathon vegging out with a commentary sounded good and since Call Girl of Cthulhu is an indie Kickstarter funded project I wondered if the commentary would be rich - this is filled with production trivia much of which is very specific to the film but filled with design tidbits (sugar plates, producer engaged to actress, etc). I'm not a big fan of commentaries and while this one was lively it didn't convert me but the producers seem passionate. Format: Blu-ray 1st Viewing
156. [Rec]4: Apocalypse (2014, 95 minutes) ★★★★½✰✰✰✰✰ It's sad to see the [Rec] franchise decline into lacking horror action video game style antics, this feels more like something out of Resident Evil than the brilliantly intense found footage origins and while it nicely pulls from the mythos those also get twisted into some much more mundane and uninteresting. For a conventional zombie action film it's mediocre, but it should have been so much more. Format: Streaming [Netflix] 1st Viewing Subset
157. Cat People (1982, 118 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ Awkwardly creates "rules" to compel a plot but if you can buy into it gets nicely brooding with conflicted characters and a satisfying overall film. Format: Blu-ray 1st Viewing Theme
158. Pet Sematary (1989, 103 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰ Exhausting film with dramatic punches and one of the creepiest kids every; effective casting helps sell thing. Format: Blu-ray Theme Subset
159. Curse II: The Bite (1989, 98 minutes) ★★★★½✰✰✰✰✰ One of the weirdest things I've seen all month, mind blowing with good practical effects tat makes this worth it despite an aimless plot filled with corny antics. Format: Streaming [Youtube] 1st Viewing
160. Deadly Eyes[aka Night Eyes (1982, 87 minutes) ★★★½✰✰✰✰✰✰ Awful movie with 'so bad it's good' (only it's not good) effects Format: Blu-ray 1st Viewing Theme
161. Dark House (2009, 85 minutes) ★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ People run around obvious stage sets from cartoonish Goosebumps looking effects; I've heard good things about this but am not sure why now. Format: DVD 1st Viewing

October 30 [Devil theme night] (13 hours, 43 minutes watched)
162. Tales From the Crypt: Demon Knight (1995, 92 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ A personal favorite - Billy Zane sells the movie and it's the right mix of pulp, comedy, and terror. The strangers trapped in a building plot might not be very original but it's executed stylishly. Format: Blu-ray 1st Viewing Theme
163. At the Devil's Door (2014, 91 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Confusing at times intersecting tales about several women across different times but comes together towards the last half in a way that's cliche but 'never gets old.' Format: Streaming [Netflix] 1st Viewing Theme
164. Freaks of Nature (2015, 92 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Decent if you go in expecting a comedy first and a 'horror' movie last, the vampires/zombies/etc are just sort of randomly inserted without obvious relevance (other than maybe exaggerated social metaphor) but it's far out enough that it ends up being energetic and fun. There's some odd crude humor but it also has a level of intelligence that makes it worth seeing if nothing to get excited about. It effectively pulls in high school drama elements. Format: Theatrical 1st Viewing
165. A Scout's Guide to Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse (2015, 93 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰ Rarely more than cute and it was overly dedicated to the 'scout' joke. It's like an inferior version of Zombieland... overall forgettable with occasional moments of that stood-out... if you're hard up for another modern zombie rom com then maybe give it a try just brace yourself for iffy joke and a thin plot. Format: Theatrical 1st Viewing
166. Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension (2015, 95 minutes) ★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ A letdown, it's disappointing to see them resort to inferior effects and doesn't offer much to standout within the lackluster later series installments. If you've invested time into the series so far it's probably worth a rental to see but otherwise a continuity heavy retread that at least shows a dedication to mythos. Format: Theatrical 1st Viewing Theme
167. Bloody April Fools [aka Los Inocentes (2015, 70 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ A great modern slasher that's more fun than I expected; nothing too original but gory enough with good pacing. Format: Streaming [Netflix] 1st Viewing
168. The Gift (2015, 108 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ A tense thriller but some characters seem to just be over reacting and at least one 'twist' is predictable; not really horror (maybe borderline) so using a wild card - worth seeing but not as good as I'd hoped. Format: Streaming [Ultraviolet HDX] 1st Viewing [Wild Card #1]
169. Book of Life (2014, 95 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Stylized cartoon fantasy about the Day of the Dead; was fun to watch with the kids. Format: Streaming [Ultraviolet HDX] [Wild Card #2]
170. The Damned (2013, 87 minutes) ★★★★½✰✰✰✰✰ Average with some conventional tropes. Format: Streaming [Netflix] 1st Viewing [Wild Card #1]

October 31 [Devil theme night] (11 hours, 7 minutes watched)
171. Thale (2012, 77 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ Far out fantasy horror with a great indie feel and a very original feel. Format: Streaming [Netflix] 1st Viewing
172. Trick or Treats (1982, 91 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰ Silly film that seems more focused on fluff diversion than horror elements but eventually pulls things together and seems more focused on fun that chills. Format: Blu-ray 1st Viewing Theme
173. From the Dark (2014, 90 minutes) ★★★★★★★½✰✰ Hit the spot with it's creepy mysterious extended chase antics, an unexpected sleeper hit this challenge. Format: Streaming [Netflix] 1st Viewing Theme
174. Paranorman (2012, 93 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ I really like the animated style and the vulnerable nature of may characters, despite it's unassuming nature it pulls some unexpected twists. Format: Streaming [Ultraviolet HDX] Theme
175. Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet Frankenstein (1999, 78 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Has a nice classic cartoon feel and was fun watching with the kids while waiting to go trick or treating - running around a theme park and teaching Frankenstein to make friends. Format: Streaming [Netflix] Theme
176. Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet the Wolfman (2000, 77 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Slightly darker than A&C Meet Frankenstein with the female chipmunks and more going on. Format: Streaming [Netflix] Theme
177. The Invisible Man (1933, 71 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ Nice first half but then seems to slow and try to be more scientific, Invisible Man is one of my favorite Universal monsters second to the Creature. Format: Blu-ray 1st Viewing
178. The Strangers (2008, 90 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ My wife likes The Strangers so we traditionally watch it every year; it's good but this time the flaws seemed more obvious - I like the tension between characters and menacing nature of the stalkers. Format: Blu-ray

November 1 [before dusk] [Comedy theme night] (? hours, ?? minutes watched)
179. What We Do In the Shadows (2014, 87 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Much more scattered than I expected with a full on dedication to it's documentary premise with good character driven comedy but too anchored by awkward personalities, I'd prefer more typical plot basis. Not bad but over hyped. Format: Blu-ray 1st Viewing Theme Subset
