Historical Appreciation Challenge: The Gift of Wood Year List Thread

Believe it or not, folks, but this is the fifth year of the Historical Appreciation Challenge. I've pored over the 2013 Discussion Thread, and have made the following adjustments for this year. Any other modification suggestions are welcomed right up until the beginning of the challenge, so go ahead and toss out your ideas!

In a nutshell, here are the basics:
  • This challenge will run from dusk on 31 May until dawn on 1 July 2014.
  • Movies and TV content specifically about a historical figure, event or period are eligible.
  • Tangential content (i.e., fantasy, time travel, movies merely set in a generic "past" where the time period is not emphasized as important) is to be excluded, except...
  • The final night of the challenge, from dusk on 30 June until dawn on 1 July, you may watch Time Travel films to count double with your Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge list. However, the setting(s) must have already taken place, so you can't watch a movie set in the future that travels to a different point in the future.

Is TV Content Allowed?
Certainly! Just make sure that it's as consistent with the spirit of the challenge as the movies you might watch. We used to allow anything on The History Channel carte blanche but with the proliferation of reality TV shows there, try to remember that no matter how dangerous driving a semi across ice is, it isn't "historical"...yet!

Counting
Many of the films at the heart of this challenge have considerable run times, so even though there's always a sort of de facto goal of hitting 100 movies watched, it's not really expected here. We'd much rather you take this opportunity to finally see Lawrence of Arabia than to squeeze in two shorter films.

Since there are no prizes for this challenge, feel free to count using whichever method best suits you. The standard is that 2 TV broadcast hours or short films is equivalent to 1 movie. Some members prefer to count each episode or short as a single entry. Others tally their cumulative viewing time. Whatever floats your boat. It's your list!

Why Aren't Documentaries on the Checklist?
It's up to each participant to decide what mix of dramatizations and documentaries best suits him or her. If you want to watch documentaries exclusively, you're welcome to do that. If you don't want to watch any, that's fine, too. Some checkmarks will be easier to attain with docs, though!

Hey, What About...?
I'm the host and my BA was earned in history, but I haven't seen every movie ever made and I don't have an encyclopedic knowledge of every historical figure, event and period. Regarding specific films, I would suggest--and this goes for any questions--that you ask about a specific film in the discussion thread and see what feedback you get from others who have seen it. If you don't get anything helpful, my rule of thumb is that if you feel that you have a sufficient reason to believe that it's an appropriate selection then go ahead and watch it. If it turns out not to really fit the nature of this challenge, still count it as a viewing but please share your thoughts with us.

CHECKLIST
Spoiler:
GENERAL
WHEN

--- Movie 1 (Century)
--- Movie 2 (Century)
--- Movie 3 (Century)
--- Movie 4 (Century)
--- Movie 5 (Century)

WHERE
Watch 5 movies about historical events of different countries (Note Country of setting).
--- Movie 1 (Country)
--- Movie 2 (Country)
--- Movie 3 (Country)
--- Movie 4 (Country)
--- Movie 5 (Country)

WHO _/10
Watch at least five of the ten following subcategories:

FOLKLORE & FAITH
--- Film about prehistory
--- Film about the mythology of Antiquity (i.e., Greek gods, dramatization of Homeric poems, etc.)
--- Film about religious history (based on either recorded historical events or fables arising from Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, etc.)
--- Film about a folk hero
--- Film about either the Humanities (fine arts) or Sports figure/event

HEY, THEY WERE THERE, TOO!: A LOOK AT MARGINALIZED PEOPLES
(Focus on prominent figures from history and/or depictions of their minority group's oppression, etc.)
--- Film about Women's History
--- Film about Race Relations
--- Film about the LGBTQ Community
--- Film about Religious Minority
--- Film about Immigrants

TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY
--- Watch at least two movies about the same person/event where each movie is from a different perspective (1/2)
--- Watch at least two movies about the same person/event where each movie is from a different perspective (2/2)

WAR _/10
Watch at least five of the following ten War subcategories:

--- Resistance Movement/Civilians film
--- Submarine film
--- War Spy
--- War film that was produced *during* that war
--- Film about war criminals
--- Film about veterans after the war (framing a "flashback" film doesn't count, so no Saving Private Ryan for this one)
--- Wartime propaganda film OR a film produced by the military

WESTERN _/10
Watch at least five of these ten Western subcategories:

--- The Union Pacific story. (The plot concerns construction of a railroad, a telegraph line, or some other type of modern technology or transportation.) Wagon train stories probably fall into this category.
--- The ranch story. (The plot concerns threats to the ranch from rustlers or large landowners attempting to force out the proper owners.)
--- The empire story. (The plot might involve building up a ranch empire or an oil empire from scratch, a classic rags-to-riches plot.)
--- The revenge story. (The plot often involves an elaborate chase and pursuit, but it may also include elements of the classic mystery story.)
--- The cavalry and Indian story. (The plot revolves around taming the wilderness for white settlers.)
--- The outlaw story. (The outlaw gangs dominate the action.)
--- The marshal story. (The lawman and his challenges drive the plot.)
--- "Export Western" - a Western not actually set in America. There have been numerous Westerns set in Australia, for instance. Samurai films could count for this, too, given the relationship between the two genres.
--- Western movie with a direct connection to a TV show, since Westerns were part of TV's golden age before the Space Generation
--- Neo-Western (i.e., a Western set in more contemporary times, to demonstrate the genre is still alive)

ZEITGEIST _/10
Watch at least five of the following subcategories:

--- Watch a film about a disaster (natural or man made such as Chernobyl)
--- Watch a film about a landmark or sensational trial (i.e., "true crime")
--- Watch a film about a scientific discovery
--- Watch a film about a person or an event for which there is now a holiday
--- Watch a film about a pop culture craze
--- Watch a film about a medical condition (effects, treatment discoveries, etc.)
--- Watch a film about an invention of something that changed an industry (and/or its inventor)
--- Watch a film about colonialism
--- Watch a film about the transfer of power of a government (election, coup, or other)
--- Watch a film set in an era defined by a specific law (Prohibition, Jim Crow, etc.)

-X- Western movie with a direct connection to a TV show: River of No Return (1954) - features Rory Calhoun who starred in The Texan

--- Watch a film about the transfer of power of a government (election, coup, or other)

Re: Historical Appreciation Challenge: The Gift of Wood Year List Thread

Title in BLACK = DVD/Blu Ray from my personal collection.
Title in RED = Online viewing (Mostly Netflix).
Title in BLUE = DVD/Blu Ray rental.
* = First time viewing.

In keeping with the previous month's Make Your Own Challenge which for me was music on DVD I'll start with a few music documentaries.

June 1
1. Deep Purple: History, Hits & Highlights '68-'76
(2009) Two documentaries of the early history of the band from French and New Zealand television.
2. Inside the Tale of the Fox: The Eric Carr Story (2000) A biography of Paul Caravello AKA Eric Carr, drummer of KISS who replaced original drummer Peter Criss and who was with the band from 1980 until his death in 1991. Rare video footage and testimonials from those who knew him.

June 2 - I'm gonna get Old Testament on yo' ass!
3. King David
* (1985) Richard Gere as the Old Testament King. Sometimes a bit plodding but still pretty good. Two of my favourite actresses, Cherie Lunghi and Alice Krieg are here but sadly very briefly.
4. The Exodus Decoded* (2006) Documentary that seeks to prove historically and scientifically the story of Exodus. A compelling case is put forth, I must say.

June 3 - I'm gonna get Tudor Dynasty on yo' ass!
4. Anne of the Thousand Days
* (1969) Richard Burton and Genevieve Bujold are the definitive Henry the VIII and Anne Boleyn in this historical epic of the libidinous king and a woman who inadvertently fans power and is then destroyed by it. An absolutely stunning production and Bujold is nothing short of brilliant as Anne Boleyn.
5. Elizabeth (1998) Cathe Blanchet as the Virgin Queen. Fantastic performances all around.

June 4 - I'm gonna get Sexy on yo' ass!
6. Lovelace
* (2013) I love Amanda Seyfried in anything but here she really shines as the reluctant porn star Linda Lovelace. And it wasn't until the end movie credits that I saw that Sharon Stone plays Linda's mom, she was totally unrecognizable!
7. The Notorious Bettie Page (2005) Gretchen Moll is really good as Bettie in this bio-pic that is shot almost entirely in glorious black and white.

June 5 - I'm gonna get True Crime on yo' ass!
8. Lizzy Borden Took an Ax
* (2014) Christina Ricci stars in this true crime story of the woman who allegedly killed her parents. The murders themselves almost take a back seat to a lot of police procedure and courtroom scenes but still a pretty good movie. Ricci herself is quite good as well.
9. Zodiac (2007) Chilling account of the Zodiac killings and the investigation into the murders. One of David Fincher's best.

June 6 - I'm gonna get Wild on yo' ass!
10. Gorillas in the Mist
(1988) True life account of Dian Fossey who studied and protected the mountain gorilla. Sigourney Weaver is excellent in the role.

June 7 - I'm gonna get Airborne on yo' ass!
11. Flyboys
(2006) "Based on true events" which is code for "most of this we just made it up". James Franco is an american pilot volunteering in WWI France. The dogfights are exciting but the rest is pretty dull. There's even a totally contreived romance subplot to make things even more boring.
12. The Hindenburg* (1975) Fact is mixed with fiction as a german rebel tries to sabotage the Zeppelin in order to discredit Hitler and the Nazi party. A bit too long and talky but still pretty good.

June 8 - I'm gonna get Hired Gunmen on yo' ass!
11. The Day of the Jackal
* (1973) Not based on a true story but the milieu of the story is historical enough. The story follows a methodical hit man code name Jackal who is hired to assassinate then French president Charles De Gaulle. Such attempts were made (but never successful) on De Gaulle so there are some historically accurate circumstances. A very long film but absolutely gripping - a classic.
12. The Magnificent Seven* (1998) Episode 1: Ghosts of the Confederacy TV series based on the movie. In this pilot episode the Seven meet for the first time and are hired by an Indian tribe that needs protection from a leftover Confederate troupe.

June 9 - I'm gonna get Wild West on yo' ass!
13. The Magnificent Seven
* (1973) Episode 2: One day out west A judge arrives in town meaning to bring down the law but the residents have other plans.
14. The Magnificent Seven* (1998) Episode 3: Working Girls A group of travelling prostitutes stir things up in the small town where the Seven live.

June 10 - I'm gonna get Post Civil War on yo' ass!
13. Hatfields & McCoys
* (2012) Episode 1 In post Civil War Kentucky, the heads of two rival families continue their own war. Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton star. Pretty damn good.

June 11
14. Hatfields & McCoys
* (2012) Episode 2 A Romeo & Juliet storyline unfolds that leads to more strife among the feuding families.

June 12
15. Hatfields & McCoys
* (2012) Episode 3 Damn this mini-series was good - and based on historical events too. Reccommended.

June 13 - I'm gonna get Ancient Egypt on yo' ass!
16. Mystery of the Sphinx
* (1993) Documentary that puts forth the theory that the Sphinx lis much older than we thought. Charlton Heston narrates so it must be true.

June 13 - I'm gonna WWII on yo' ass!
17. Das Boot
* (1985) This is the longer mini-series version of this great film. Absolutely engrossing tale of a German U-Boat during WWII - a classic.

June 14-20 - On hiatus watching other non-historical stuff.

June 21 - I'm going to get 1800's on yo ass!
18. September Dawn
(2007) Movie about the Mountain Meadows Massacre in 1857 where Mormons slaughtered a caravan of pioneers headed to California because they had trespassed on their land (or so this movie says). How much of it is true is up for debate and the film portrays the Mormons as blood-thirsty zealots. There's also a tacked-on Romeo and Juliet romance in there that's pretty boring.
19. The Journey of August King* (1995) Set in the early 1800's, a travelling man comes across a runaway slave, at first he wants nothing to do with her but later after her insistence he helps her escape those that hunt her down and a bond forms between them - not a romantic one but one born of compassion for another human being. Very moving and well acted story with Thandie Newton and Jason Patric.

June 22 - I'm going to use a long-range rifle on yo ass!
20. Quigley Down Under
(1990) Very entertaining western set in Australia about an American (Tom Selleck) hired to shoot aborigines. When he refuses to do so he becomes a hunted man along with a crazy woman (Laura San Giacomo) who mistakes Selleck for her estranged husband. Gunfights and adventure ensue. Great score by Basil Poledouris as well.

June 23-26 - Another hiatus.

June 27 - I'm gonna go Beatlemania on yo' ass!
21. Good 'Ol Freda
* (2013) Freda Kelly recounts her days as the secretary of the Fab Four from the very beginning to the end. Quite moving at times and a fascinating (if rather low-key) telling of the rise of The Beatles.
22. The Linda McCartney Story (2000) Elizabeth Mitchell (Lost) portrays Linda McCartney in this bio-pic of the most famous Beatle wife.

June 28 - I'm gonna get WWII on yo ass (again)!
23. The Monuments Men
* (2014) True story of a small group of soldiers whose mission was to save and retrieve works of art stolen by the Nazis during WWII. George Clooney stars and directs an ensemble cast who do a good job but the story could have used some more excitement because it does drag on in places.

Re: Historical Appreciation Challenge: The Gift of Wood Year List Thread

“I knew that a historian (or a journalist, or anyone telling a story) was forced to choose, out of an infinite number of facts, what to present, what to omit. And that decision inevitably would reflect, whether consciously or not, the interests of the historian.”

Re: Historical Appreciation Challenge: The Gift of Wood Year List Thread

2014 Historical Film Challenge

First-Time Viewing:: 4
Blu-Ray::2
DVD:: 2
TV: 9
Netflix:: 4
YouTube:

June 1
1. The Sand Pebbles (1966). Netflix. Probably Steve McQueen's most interesting performance, as a engineer's mate on a U.S. Navy gunship in 1926 China who gets caught up in conflict between East and West. As much I want to enjoy The Sand Pebbles, I find its cloth-headed reduction of the complexities of Western colonialism in China to what is basically a cowboys and Indians picture infuriating.
2. 20 Feet from Stardom (2013). Netflix. Just a sheer joy listening to the stories from the women who made the sound we identify with the classic pop songs of the 60s and 70s. Merry Clayton's vocals on "Gimme Shelter" alone are worth the price of admission.

June 2
3. The Buccaneer (1958). TV. I suppose Paramount was trying to recapture the success of The Ten Commandments with another pairing of Charlton Heston and Yul Brynner and an introduction by Cecil B. DeMille, but it really isn't very good, and Heston is utterly miscast as Andrew Jackson.

June 3
4. Captain Phillips (2009). TV. Tom Hanks is awesome in this retelling of the 2009 hijacking of the Maersk Alabama. This is one of those movies that one can praise for its excellence, yet never need to watch again.
5. A Big Hand for the Little Lady (1966). TV. On the other hand, this is a movie I could watch over and over. Great cast and a clever story about a high stakes poker game.

June 5
6. Woodstock (1969). TV I was only 8 years old during the summer of 69, the summer of the Apollo moon landing and of a rock concert in a small town in upstate New York, so Woodstock's impact came to me second-hand from the music the big kids were listening to. So much of it is dated, but the music is immortal.

June 6
7. The Longest Day (1962). DVD. Apart from the opening of Saving Private Ryan, this is the best version of D-Day we'll ever have on film.

June 10
8. Winchester '73 (1950). DVD. An excellent film that helped revive Jimmy Stewart's career.

June 15
9. Pirates of Blood River (1962). TV. . Christopher Lee does a French accent in this cheesy Hammer pirate flick.

June 16
10. Henry V (1944). TV Olivier's florid style of declaiming Shakespeare instead of acting his words naturally doesn't translate well 70 years later. Branagh's version of the play is superior.

June 17
11. 55 Days at Peking (1963). TV Despite the yellowface racist casting of British actors as Manchus and the ridiculous soap opera plot twists, this is still a fun adventure flick.

June 19
12. Argo (2012). TV: Even though the outcome is already well known, I still hold my breath when Affleck is leading the Americans out of Tehran. Gripping film with disturbing echoes for current events.
13. Ararat (2002). TV.: Atom Egoyan's attempt to make a layered film of personal drama, behind-the-scenes film making and the Armenian Genocide of 1915 fails completely. The extermination of the Armenian population in Anatolia during WWI is an important story that needs to be told, but Egoyan robs the tragedy of its power by slapping in weak scenes of people screaming at each other about suicide and drugs. Egoyan should have followed Spielberg and just let the genocide tell its own story.

June 21
14. The 300 Spartans (1962). Netflix. More or less an historically faithful retelling of the stand of the 300 at Thermopylae, with 90% less homoeroticism than 300. Of course, like every other sword and sandals flick of the period, the conflict between the Greeks and the Persians is recast with Cold War overtones as a struggle between freedom and tyranny, which is ridiculous to anyone who knows Greek history.
15. The Message (1976). Veoh: Overly long and a bit opaque to anyone who is unfamiliar with Islamic history, but worth watching nonetheless. Given the prohibitions
on depictions of the Prophet, the decision to tell Muhammad's story took a certain amount of courage. The film never shows Muhammad; instead, characters either talk about him or talk into the camera when they are addressing him.
16. Rob Roy (1995). TV: A rousing action film with a fantastic cast. Tim Roth is excellent as the unimaginable bastard antagonist.
17. 54 (1998). TV: An oddly dull film about a glittering period of excess. Mike Myers should have gotten on Oscar nomination for his fearless portrayal of Steve Rubell, but the rest of the cast is frankly terrible.

June 24
18. Cleopatra (1963). Blu-Ray. At long last I have finally watched Cleopatra in its entirety and it is spectacular. The sets and costume design are sumptuous, and you can see where the exorbitant budget went in the battles scenes.

June 25
19. Z (1969). DVD. A political thriller so intense and so scathing an indictment of fascism that Tricky Dick had it banned in the US. Plus it has a fantastic soundtrack.
20. Alexander (2004). TV: Oliver Stone delivers a deeply flawed bio of Alexander the Great. The cast is fantastic, but Colin Farrell just doesn't create the larger-than-life figure who conquered Asia from Asia Minor to Persia, India, Afghanistan and damned close to China.

June 26
21. Grease (1978). Blu-Ray: Although nobody is going to include Grease in the Great American Songbook, but it's a fun comfort food movie. It's interesting that the 70s felt and looked so different from the 1950s, even though Grease is only 20 years removed the film's setting, and the 70s were much closer to the 50s than we are to the 70s.
22. Zulu Dawn (1979). Netflix.: Another film that de-mythologizes the aura of glory attached to the building of Britain's empire, this time showing the governmental incompetence that led to a major British defeat at Isandlwana during the Zulu War in South Africa.

June 27
23. The Night They Raided Minsky's (1968). TV: Set in 1925, trhis film purports to tell the origin of the striptease in burlesque.

June 28
24. Daddy and the Muscle Academy (1991). DVD: A documentary about the life and work of Tom of Finland, an iconic artist whose muscled nudes defined the ideal image of gay leather masculinity.

June 29
25. Cinderella Man (2005). TV: A truly terrific film about the fall and rise of boxer James J Braddock, played well by Russell Crowe.

June 30
26. On a Clear Day You Can See Forever (1970) DVD--. Barbara is fabulous as always, although casting Yves Montand as the romantic lead was a mistake IMO. Fun movie nonetheless, with Barbra playing a modern girl (for 40 years ago) and a psychic in Regency England.
