Well, Nolan's reasoning isn't official.
The DVD of The Dark Knight maintains the 2.35:1 aspect ratio throughout the entire picture whereas the Blu-ray and digital copy do not. However, on the flip side, the DVD contains the IMAX footage in its OAR as a bonus feature whereas the Blu-ray does not.
I don't grasp why filmmakers and studios can't just use seamless branching for the IMAX footage. You can either choose to watch the film in its OAR/original theatrical presentation for the entire running time or view the IMAX "version" instead.

Looking at the IMAX footage in M:i-GP, there's enough headroom and otherwise empty space in the 2.40:1 matte to suggest that it was indeed composed with 2.40:1 in mind and that the rest of the 1.44:1 was never meant to be seen but rather perceived.
So in both cases, even if we were to use a projector and sit close, we wouldn't really get an IMAX effect.
That said, an option should have still been made available. Not necessarily via seemless branching (there some nasty compression artefacts in one scene which would probably be made worse cramming more data into the disc) but via two separate releases.

The digital version of this title is in HD. Your Vudu and UV accounts can now be linked. I had rented Shame via Vudu and noticed all of my UV titles are now available on Vudu. M:I 4 was in HDX format. The other UV titles I have are from WB and all were SD. This is the first UV title I know of that is in HD.

Prior to just a few years ago, ALL IMAX locations had screens installed for the 1.44:1 aspect ratio. Domes, stand-alone IMAX theaters, and auditoriums in existing multiplexes all carried installed screens with the same, exact aspect ratio.
When IMAX came out with the MPX projection system (specifically as IMAX was going to an all-digital system), it was the first IMAX projector specifically with a 1.89:1 aspect ratio. However, retrofitted auditoriums utilizing these projectors didn't pop up closer until a year-or-two before IMAX actually launched their digital projectors. A lot of AMC and Regal locations used these MPX projectors before the digital projectors were installed. The three Regal theaters here in town that retrofitted existing auditoriums used the MPX projectors (for only a few months) until the digital projectors were installed in early-to-mid 2009.
However, the IMAX theater I go to the most still has that original installed 1.44:1 screen. They went from using an SR projector to a digital one last year. The screen sizes are pretty apparent too:
41 x 56 feet (Brenden Palms; 1.44:1)
35 x 57 feet (Regal Red Rock; 1.78:1)
33 x 51 feet (Regal Aliante Stadium; 1.78:1)
24 x 48 feet (Regal Sunset Station; 2.1:1)
There's only one screen here in town with an installed screen of a 2.1:1 aspect ratio. But why even bother when it's almost half the size of the others in town (retrofitted or not)?
In case of the United States and Canada, these are most of the 70mm locations still left:
The reason they're the few remaining? They all have screens close to, if not larger, 70 feet tall (and all have a wonderful 1.44:1 aspect ratio). Digital projectors suck on the large screens and that's why IMAX is waiting to have laser projectors before converting those locations over.

The IMAX at Tuttleman is a dome so I never realized that was a 70 mm either but the Tropicana in the list is actually in Atlanyptic City.

The last I checked, the Jordan's IMAX in Natick, MA was still a 15/70 theater.

I just watched my Australian Triple play copy the other day, discovered horribly noticeable macroblocking in particular sequences (especially red wall panelling in Kremlin break in sequence) and jumped online to see if anyone else expereinced the same.
Some posters over at blu-ray.com have made similar observations but it doesnt seem to be a universal observation. Anyone here notice anything?
Its a bizaare thing, havent seen macroblocking this bad on any other blu ray.
