Re: The 6th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Thread

This Year's Goal
The 6th Annual
"October Horror Movie Challenge"
Friday - October 1

1. Jaws (1975) - ***** (DVD - 3:45 pm)
Tagline : The terrifying motion picture from the terrifying No. 1 best seller
Comments : A great white shark terrorizes the people of Amity Island during the July 4th holiday weekend. Last year, I started the challenge with a classic (Alien) and decided to do the same this year. Loved this movie and remember seeing it at the good old age of 7 first-run in the theater. The movie is a classic and deservedly so. 35 years and it hasn't lost a thing for me!

2. Jaws 2 (1978) - **** (DVD - 6:00 pm)
Tagline : Just When You Thought It Was Safe To Go Back In The Water...
Comments : The people of Amity have to deal with another great white shark off its' coast. Not up to the standards of the original, but has its moments. Having most of the original cast boosts this film quite a bit. As a kid, I got to see the production of this film in Navarre Beach, FL and have pictures of the actual shark in prop storage as well as many of the sailboats used. Nostalgia factor plays a big part in my enjoyment of this one.

3. Jaws III (1983) - ** (DVD - 8:00 pm)
Tagline : Reaching New Depths of Terror
Comments : A great white shark and it's mother are trapped in a Florida theme park. The only real draw of this film were the 3-D effects, sadly not available on DVD. Poor visual effects and performances don't really help the silly story one bit. Universal dropped the ball with this one.

4. Jaws: The Revenge (1987) - * (DVD - 9:45 pm)
Tagline : This Time It's Personal
Comments : Ellen Brody is haunted by the memories of the shark that attacked her family and leaves Amity to visit her marine biologist son in the Bahamas where another great white has followed her. Yikes! Hard to believe this one made it through the pitching stage, much less into production. One of the worst cases of taking a classic and sinking the franchise to the lowest depths. It's easy to see why the series died after this mess of a movie.

5. From Beyond (1986) - *** (DVD - 11:15 pm) 31 Films Subset
Tagline : Humans Are Such Easy Prey
Comments : A science experiment goes wrong and brings forth something from another dimension. Pretty over-the-top but fun film has it's moments. If you liked Re-Animator, you may enjoy this one too. I watched this for the first time last year during the challenge and re-watched it for the subset films.

Saturday - October 2

6. Sisters (1973) - **** (DVD - 9:00 am) 31 Films Subset
Tagline : What the Devil Hath Joined Together Let No Man Cut Asunder
Comments : A journalist witnesses a murder in a young model's apartment and tries to prove that it actually happened. I remember seeing this movie as a kid and it freaked me out. If you like psychological thrillers, give it a try. Some people will be confused by the ending, but just enough information is given to let you decide exactly what happens. Still good and creepy!

7. The Hand (1981) - *** (DVD - 11:00 am) 1st Time Viewing
Tagline : It lives. It crawls. And suddenly, it kills.
Comments : A cartoonist loses his hand in a car accident, only to have it return with murderous intent. Silly set-up, to say the least, but well-acted by Michael Caine and an early work of director Oliver Stone. Love the music by James Horner, nicely shot with a few interesting moments throughout. If you can buy into the premise, it's actually a fun little movie.

8. The Amityville Horror (1979) - **** (DVD - 12:45 pm)
Tagline : "For God's Sake, Get Out!"
Comments : A family moves into the home where a family was murdered and begin to experience supernatural events. A pretty good haunted house movie with an excellent and creepy score. Performances are good throughout. Widely debated as to its' claims of truth, but entertaining none-the-less.

9. Amityville II: The Possession (1982) - ** (DVD - 2:45 pm)
Tagline : The night of February 5, 1976, George and Kathleen Lutz fled their home in Amityville, New York. They got out alive! Their living nightmare shocked audiences around the world in "The Amityville Horror." But before them, another family lived in this house and were caught by the original evil. They weren't so lucky... this is their story!
Comments : A prequel to the original story loosely based on the real-life events of the DeFeo murders. Some scares but takes things a little too over the top, including the incestous nature of the murderer and his sister. Shameless rip-off of "The Exorcist" by the finale.

10. Amityville 3-D (1983) - ** (DVD - 4:30 pm)
Tagline : WARNING: in this movie you are the victim.
Comments : A journalist buys the Amityville house with intentions to disprove the hauntings, only the house has other ideas. Well, a big step down to be sure and the last of the sequels to get a theatrical release until the remake. 3-D gimmick can't help this one. A young Meg Ryan appears as the daughter's friend. Too bad they didn't go for a better overall story on this one.

11. The Amityville Horror (2005) - **** (DVD - 6:15 pm)
Tagline : Based On The True Story
Comments : A family is terrorized by supernatural forces in their new home. Remake of the original is fairly effective and much better than the direct-to-video sequels. Performances are good throughout. Movie has a much meaner approach than the original.

12. Galaxy of Terror (1981) - ** (DVD - 9:45 pm) 1st Time Viewing
Tagline : Your Countdown To Hell Is About To Begin
Comments : The crew of a rescue spaceship crash land on a distant planet only to fall victim to an alien force. Ever wondered what "Alien" would look like if Roger Corman did it? Here you go. About what you'd expect. Absolute shameless rip-off doesn't come anywhere close to "Alien" but has its appeal. Worm-rape scene was supposedly handled by James Cameron.

13. Midnight Movie (2008) - **** (DVD - 11:15 pm) 1st Time Viewing
Tagline : The New Face Of Horror
Comments : During the viewing of a 70's horror film, the killer from the film attacks the audience at the midnight showing. Had no idea what to expect from this and I actually liked it. Decent mix of comedy and gore.

Sunday - October 3

14. The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) - **** (DVD - 12:30 am)
Tagline : A Different Set of Jaws
Comments : Brad and Janet are stranded in the castle of a transvestite doctor who is creating life. Home viewings can't duplicate the theater experience, but still fun to watch. Songs are good and it moves pretty quick. Tim Curry completely owns this movie.

15. The Cat and the Canary (1927) - *** (Netflix Online- 10:30 am) 1st Time Viewing / 31 Films Subset
Tagline : The Mystery Thriller of the Stage Filmed with New Effects
Comments : The relatives of a wealthy man gather 30 years after his death for the reading of the will, only to be stalked by a killer. Not bad but I have to admit, I don't really care for silent films. Also, still not crazy about streaming video. The creepy housekeeper and the aunt were fun to watch.

16. The Omen (1976) - **** (DVD - 12:45 pm)
Tagline : You Have Been Warned
Comments : An American ambassador learns to his horror that his son is actually the literal Antichrist. Very creepy movie with a haunting musical score. Not gory, although there are some memorable deaths involved. Creepy nanny is excellent.

17. Damien: Omen II (1978) - *** (DVD - 2:30 pm)
Tagline : The First Time Was Only A Warning
Comments : At a military school, Damien, now seven years older and living under the care of his wealthy uncle in Chicago, learns of his destiny as the antichrist. Decent follow-up to the original with a few unintentionally funny moments. Still, a solid entry in the series with some well-known faces and a few grisly moments.

18. Omen III: The Final Conflict (1981) - ** (DVD - 4:30 pm)
Tagline : The power of evil is no longer in the hands of a child.
Comments : Damien, now 32, continues his rise to power while a group of priests try to destroy him. Not a very good sequel but still watchable. The slaughtering of newborn babies is pretty disturbing along with a few gory deaths.

19. Omen IV: The Awakening (1991) - * (DVD - 6:15 pm)
Tagline : They said it was over. They were wrong.
Comments : A young couple adopt a baby girl and then witness strange events that happen around her. Plays more like a remake or reboot until a final connection is made near the end of the film. Made-for-TV film can't begin to hold up to the original. And what is up with the music in this one? Does not fit the tone in the slightest and very distracting!

20. The Omen (2006) - *** (DVD - 8:00 pm)
Tagline : The prophecy is clear. The signs are unmistakable. On the 6th day of the 6th month in the year 2006 his day will come.
Comments : An American ambassador learns to his horror that his son is actually the literal Antichrist. This remake is a faithful retread of the original only with modern effects. Overall, not as effective but not bad and worth a look. But if you've seen the original, you've basically seen this too. Mia Farrow gives the film its creepiest moments.
Monday - October 4

21. Horror Hotel (1960) - *** (DVD - 4:00 pm) 1st Time Viewing / 31 Films Subset
Tagline : 300 years old! Human blood keeps them alive forever!
Comments : A college student travels to a quiet New England village to research it's ties to witchcraft. Good movie with a brief appearance by a young Christopher Lee. Lots of atmosphere with the fog effects. A little too predicatable but not bad.

22. Anatomy (2000) - *** (DVD - 5:30 pm) 1st Time Viewing
Tagline : They can't wait to get their hands on you. Your end is only the beginning.
Comments : A medical student get a chance to study at a well-respected anatomy class and discovers some grisly findings. Pretty good movie with good bit of gore. Very creepy film with some terrific effects. Can't remember ever seeing it before.

Tuesday - October 5

23. The Shining (1980) - ***** (DVD - 4:30 pm)
Tagline : A Masterpiece Of Modern Horror
Comments : A writer and his family are caretakers to a hotel during the harsh winter months, isolated but not necessarily alone. Great movie that drips atmosphere. The music and camera shots are very hypnotic. Performances are great across the board in this classic.

24. Dead Snow (2009) - **** (DVD - 9:30 pm) 1st Time Viewing / 31 Films Subset
Tagline : Ein! Zwei! Die!
Comments : A group of pre-med students on Easter Break run across Nazi zombies in the mountains. I had no expectations going into this one and was pretty unimpressed in the beginning, aside from the cinematography which was excellent. Then the movie kicks into high gear and becomes pretty good and gory. Most jaw-droppingly disgusting sex scene seen so far this month!

Wednesday - October 6

25. It's Alive (1974) - ** (DVD - 5:30 pm) 31 Films Subset
Tagline : There's only ONE thing wrong with the Davis baby: it's alive.
Comments : A murderous baby is on the loose. I have tried to like this movie. It's funny but overall, I just couldn't get into it. I'm sure in the right mood it would be better but I was bored.
26. The Deadly Spawn (1983) - *** (DVD - 9:30 pm) 1st Time Viewing
Tagline : They Came To Earth To Feed On Human Flesh!
Comments : A meteorite crashes and unleashes an alien that goes on a rampage. Very low-budget gore-fest is about what you expect from the early 80's and that's not a bad thing! Pretty clever and well-done for its shoe-string budget.

Thursday - October 7

27. Octaman (1971) - No Stars (DVD - 4:30 pm) 1st Time Viewing / 31 Films Subset
Tagline : Sci-Fi...Alien or Mutation...Man or Reptile...
Comments : A team of researchers discovers a strange mutation or man and octopus who proceeds to terrorize them. The longest hour and nineteen minutes of my challenge so far. What a painful movie this was! Low budget would be a step up. So bad it's only good when drunk type of film. "Der's a nutter reever over der..."

28. The Hearse (1980) - *** (DVD - 11:00 pm)
Tagline : There is a door between life and death and now, that door is open!
Comments : A woman moves into her aunt's old house to recover from her divorce and is menaced by an old black hearse. This used to be on HBO all the time when I was little. Not bad but could have been better. Ending is more abrupt after a slow but consistent build-up.

Friday - October 8

29. Salvage (2009) - *** (DVD - 5:00 pm) 1st Time Viewing / 31 Films Subset
Tagline : Fear Cannot Be Contained
Comments : The residents of a quiet street are thrust into the middle of a battle between a murderous mutated creature and the military. Not bad but at times difficult to follow due to the thick accents. Some elements pay off better than others but overall a good film.

30. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) - **** (DVD - 7:30 pm)
Tagline : Inspired By A True Story
Comments : A group of kids returning from Mexico come across the dangerous Hewitt family in rural Texas. Decent remake ups the gore and does a good job of keeping your interest. I still like this one over most of the other remakes out there but prefer the original. Still, not a bad movie.
Saturday - October 9

31. Cannibal Ferox (1981) - * (DVD - 8:30 am) 1st Time Viewing
Tagline : They raped and killed his sister while he watched helplessly. Now it's his turn to Make Them Die Slowly
Comments : A research time and two petty criminals enrage a group of cannibals in the Amazon. Pretty dull movie with real-life animal deaths. Some decent gore effects, but nothing special.

32. Black Rainbow (1989) - *** (DVD - 10:30 am) 1st Time Viewing / 31 Films Subset
Tagline : She can see the killer's face. She knows the victim's name. The only thing she doesn't know ... is when the murder will take place.
Comments : A psychic and her father travel from town to town to con the residents, until the psychic get the gift of fortelling future deaths. Interesting low-budget film that is slow in parts. Weird ending and Tom Hulce's terrible southern accent don't help matters.

33. Scream (1996) - **** (DVD - 3:30 pm)
Tagline : Don't Answer The Phone. Don't Open The Door. Don't Try To Escape.
Comments : A girl and her friends are being stalked by a killer in a ghost-face costume. Kicked off the 90's horror craze and is pretty effective at blendiing comedy and scares. Great cast and performances in this one.

34. Scream 2 (1997) - *** (DVD - 5:30 pm)
Tagline : Someone has taken their love of sequels one step too far.
Comments : A killer is stalking the survivors of the original film on a college campus, just as a movie opens detailing the events of their first encounter. Respectable although not quite as good sequel holds your interest and keeps things moving pretty quickly.

35. Scream 3 (2000) - ** (DVD - 7:30 pm)
Tagline : The final Scream is going to be the loudest!
Comments : Someone is murdering the stars of "Stab 3" and it's up to the original survivors to end it once and for all. A letdown in the series has a few decent moments but ultimately feels too contrived to really be effective. Too bad considering the people involved.
36. Urban Legend (1998) - *** (DVD - 10:00 pm)
Tagline : It Happened To Someone Who Knows Someone You Know... You're Next.
Comments : Someone on a college campus is killing people in methods known as urban legends. Not terrible but could have been much better. Some bad acting and a few unlikeable characters prevent it from being what it should, although some try. Brad Dourif is only a cameo in this one.

Sunday - October 10

37. Urban Legends: Final Cut (2000) - ** (DVD - 10:00 am)
Tagline : It was an urban legend that started it all. Now it continues on the Alpine University campus...
Comments : Someone at a film school is killing people in methods known as urban legends. Subpar sequel with loose ties at best to the original. Looks good but not a good movie. Nice 'twist' at the end, but not enough.

38. City of the Living Dead (The Gates of Hell) (1980) - *** (DVD - 1:00 pm) 31 Films Subset
Tagline : The Dead Shall Rise And Walk The Earth
Comments : A priest commits suicide in a cemetary and opens the gates of Hell. Not much in the way of story, just a set up for gory killings and zombies. Some interesting and disturbing kills in this one. Not Fulci's best, but a good entry.

39. Children of the Corn (1984) - *** (DVD - 4:00 pm)
Tagline : And A Child Shall Lead Them
Comments : A couple traveling through Nebraska encounter a town that is populated only be children of a religious sect. Stephen King's short story is fleshed out into a full-length movie with mostly decent results. Visual effects at the end are silly but the first half is a pretty good build up. Avoid the 2009 remake at all costs!

40. Scary Movie (2000) - *** (DVD - 8:00 pm)
Tagline : A Killer Comedy
Comments : A parody of "Scream, "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and other 90's pop culture. Hit and miss spoof with some parts that were pretty lame before the movie came out. Still, funny enough in spots.
Monday - October 11

41. The Blob (1988) - *** (DVD - 4:00 pm) 31 Films Subset
Tagline : Scream now, while there's still room to breathe.
Comments : A meteor lands and unleashes a substance that kills on contact. Gory remake of the original with mostly good effects. Some humor throughout but mostly plays it straight.

42. The Blob (1958) - *** (DVD - 6:00 pm) 1st Time Viewing
Tagline : Beware of the Blob! It creeps, and leaps, and glides and slides across the floor.
Comments : A meteor lands and unleashes a substance that kills on contact. I had never seen the original and was pretty impressed overall. Squeaky clean but a fun little monster movie.

Tuesday - October 12

43. Sheitan (2006) - *** (DVD - 10:00 pm) 1st Time Viewing / 31 Films Subset
Tagline : Christmas Eve...
Comments : A group of kids go to a house in the French countryside and encounter the strange residents of the area. Definitely one of the strangest movies I have seen during this year's challenge. Some cringe-inducing moments to be sure and one that will challenge some people's patience. Overall, interesting enough but could have been better.

Thursday - October 14

44. Hellraiser (1987) - *** (DVD - 11:00 pm)
Tagline : Demon to some. Angel to others.
Comments : A strange puzzle box unleashes demons from Hell. One of the most original horror movies of the 80's and pretty gory. Inventive effects and some twisted ideas, however, it seems to push its main villains (the Cenobites) to the background - a trend that would continue on through most of the sequels.

Friday - October 15

45. Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988) - *** (DVD - 11:00 am) 31 Films Subset
Tagline : It will tear your soul apart... again.
Comments : A doctor uses his patients to unlock the secrets of the mysterious puzzle box. Interesting continuation of the original which seems to make less sense as it goes on, but still a good, gory ride. Cenobites go missing for most of the film, but there's so much going on that you don't seem to notice.
46. The Children (2008) - **** (DVD - 1:00 pm) 31 Films Subset
Tagline : You brought them into this world. Now ... They will take you out.
Comments : A holiday gathering turns to tragedy when the children begin exhibiting strange behavior. Loved how this movie just lulls you in and then hits you with some pretty wicked accidents in an unexpected way. If you have trouble seeing children as a menace, this is not for you. One of my favorite blind buy discoveries.

47. Night of the Creeps (1986) - **** (DVD - 5:00 pm) 31 Films Subset
Tagline : "The good news is your dates are here. The bad news is... they're dead."
Comments : A college prank turns deadly when a cryogenically frozen man is thawed. Lots of fun with some pretty inventive effects. Went mostly overlooked on it's original release. Only Tom Atkins begins to annoy with his 'noir' detective dialogue.

48. The Thing (1982) - **** (HD-DVD - 7:45 pm)
Tagline : What you fear most... is among you.
Comments : Antarctic research team discovers something buried in the ice that thaws and kills. Excellent 'remake' plays more like a sequel in some ways to the original. Not a hit upon release, later became a much-loved horror hit. Great cast and atmosphere and incredible effects.

49. Halloween (2007) - *** (DVD - 9:30 pm)
Tagline : Evil Has A Destiny
Comments : Rob Zombie's update on the John Carpenter classic. I didn't care for this when I first saw it, but have grown to somewhat enjoy it. The movie is best when it decides not to copy the original film. While not up to the standards of the first film, it beats some of the sequels.

50. Halloween II (2009) - ** (DVD - 11:45 pm)
Tagline : Family is Forever.
Comments : Michael Myers continues his killing spree with special intentions for Laurie Strode. I hated this on the first viewing, and although it's still not great, I was a bit more forgiving this time around due to much lower expetations. At least it had the courage to do something different and somewhat unique, successfully or not.
Saturday - October 16

51. Fear No Evil (1981) - ** (DVD - 9:00 am) 31 Films Subset
Tagline : Meet Andrew. The Road to Hell is paved with his victims.
Comments : Satan goes to high school. I saw this in the theater back in the 80's. It was awful then and it's awful now. Silly with some cheesy acting, costumes and effects. Good for an unintentional laugh or two.

52. Paranormal Activity (2007) - *** (DVD - 11:00 am)
Tagline : What Happens When You Sleep?
Comments : A couple video tape the strange events that happen in their home at night. Pretty good low budget film with likeable leads and interesting story. I kinda like the alternate ending over the theatrical.

53. The Howling (1981) - *** (DVD - 2:00 pm)
Tagline : Imagine your worst fear a reality.
Comments : A new reporter is attacked and recovers in a small village with werewolves. At times funny and serious, with good makeup effects. Probably the only one in the series I can stand to actually watch! Dee Wallace is always good.

54. Darkness Falls (2003) - * (DVD - 4:00 pm)
Tagline : Every Legend Has Its Dark Side.
Comments : The tooth fairy is real and will kill you if you sneak a peak at her. The prologue actually sounded like a pretty good movie, but then it just turns into a big old mess. Emma Caufield deserved better. Typical PG-13 CGI crapfest.

55. Hatchet (2006) - **** (DVD - 6:15 pm)
Tagline : Old school American Horror.
Comments : A swamp tour during Mardi Gras becomes a nightmare for several tourists. Lots of gore, humor, and creative kills in this one. Excellent setting with some horror vets turning up in small but memorable cameos. A fun movie!
56. Friday the 13th (1980) - **** (DVD - 7:45 pm)
Tagline : They were warned...They are doomed...And on Friday the 13th, nothing will save them.
Comments : Counselors are slaughtered while trying to reopen a summer camp. The original classic and still the best of all the others that followed it. I was going to skip this series for the challenge this year, but was in the mood for it.

57. Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981) - *** (DVD - 9:15 pm)
Tagline : The body count continues...
Comments : A new group of counselors are preparing for a summer season next to Camp Crystal Lake. Pretty good sequel moves fast and really introduces 80's horror icon Jason. Loved the bag over the head and the ending with mother.

58. Friday the 13th Part III (1982) - *** (DVD - 11:00 pm)
Tagline : A New Dimension In Terror...
Comments : A group of friends head to the country for the weekend on the outskirts of Jason's territory. Much better in 3-D at the theater but fun anyway. For me, the most gruesome kill in the entire series (Andy).

Sunday - October 17

59. Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984) - *** (DVD - 12:30 am)
Tagline : Three Times Before You Have Felt The Terror, Known The Madness, Lived The Horror. But This Is The One You've Been Screaming For..
Comments : Kids rent a house for the weekend in the woods near Crystal Lake and next to a divorced woman and her two children. Lots of gore and nudity in this one and how can you not love a F13 movie with Crispin Glover?! Gruesome send-off for Jason by Tom Savini.

60. His Name Was Jason: 30 Years of Friday the 13th (2009) - **** (DVD - 8:00 am)
Tagline : 12 films. 3 decades. Bad luck was never so bloody.
Comments : Pretty good documentary covering all 11 films, plus a bit of the remake. With so many of the survivors willing to come back for another round, I am surprised that it hasn't at least been kicked around seriously. If done right it could be alot of fun and great for the fans.
61. My Bloody Valentine (1981) - ** (DVD - 9:30 am) 31 Films Subset
Tagline : Harry's out to steal your heart.
Comments : Miner is stalking a mining town during Valentine's Day. Still can't really get into this one as much as I'd like to. Not horrible, but nothing great either.

62. My Bloody Valentine (2009) - *** (DVD - 11:30 am)
Tagline : On January 16, Get Your Heart Broken.
Comments : A man returns to his hometown where a miner is stalking and killing people connected to his past. I actually enjoyed this more than the original. Loads of gore and some funny bits spread throughout. Better in 3D but still enjoyable.

63. Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning (1985) - ** (DVD - 2:00 pm)
Tagline : If Jason still haunts you, you're not alone! .
Comments : A halfway house for troubled teens is the scene of murders and memories of Jason by a grown Tommy Jarvis. Hated upon release, it's really not THAT bad. Silly in parts and too many characters are introduced just to kill them on in the next scene.

64. Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives! (1984) - *** (DVD - 3:30 pm)
Tagline : Kill or be killed!
Comments : Jason is brought back to life and returns to the campground where a new batch of counselors are getting ready for the season. Better than it had any right to be but a pretty weak finale. Still, some inventive kills and a sense of humor.

65. Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988) - *** (DVD - 5:30 pm)
Tagline : On Friday the 13th, Jason will meet his match.
Comments : A young girl returns to Crystal Lake with her psychiatrist to deal with her telekinesis and past. Too bad that this one was the most heavily censored of the bunch. It could have been much better. Still, I enjoyed it.
66. Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989) - *** (DVD - 7:00 pm)
Tagline : I LOVE NY.
Comments : Jason hitches a ride with some graduating seniors on a cruise to New York. Silly, trashy, and I love it! Not art but always had a soft spot for the Friday films, no matter how bad they were. Ending is still a bit bizarre but considering where they took the story in the next two installments...!

Monday - October 18

67. Tourist Trap (1979) - ** (DVD - 4:00 pm) 31 Films Subset
Tagline : Every year young people disappear.
Comments : Car trouble strands a group of kids at a creepy off-road tourist attraction. Got a little bored with this one. Guess I've seen too many of this type over and over. Some good parts though.

68. Vamp (1986) - **** (DVD - 6:00 pm)
Tagline : A Frightening Comedy
Comments : Two fraternity pledges head out to hire a stripper for their initiation. They make the mistake of finding some with a taste for human blood! Loved this movie when I saw it in the theatre. Horror comedy in the same vein (pun intended) as Fright Night. Funny with a few scares here and there - and one crazy strip sequence from Grace Jones!

69. Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993) - * (DVD - 7:30 pm)
Tagline : The creator of the first returns to bring you the last
Comments : After being blown to bits by the FBI, Jason's spirit inhabits various bodies looking for a way to be reborn. Not one of the better sequels, but at least they tried for something different. Some gory moments and a few shoutouts to other horror films.

70. Jason X (2001) - ** (DVD - 9:00 am)
Tagline : Evil Gets An Upgrade
Comments : After being cryogenically frozen, Jason is revived by a group of students who take him aboard their spaceship. Just as ludicrous as it sounds. Gets worse every time I see it and really showed signs of desperation with what to do with this franchise.
71. Freddy vs. Jason (2003) - *** (DVD - 10:30 pm)
Tagline : The "Slicer"...The "Dicer"...And This Time, They're Not Any "Nicer"!
Comments : Freddy uses Jason to strike fear on Elm Street but when even he can't control him, the two face off. Didn't remember this one being as graphic - for some reason was thinking it was another watered down PG-13 film. Mainly a Freddy movie with Jason thrown in. Some groan worthy moments with the teens, but overall pretty fun. Attempt to rewrite some of the legend (Freddy and fire / Jason and water) doesn't really work but easy to overlook.

Tuesday - October 19

72. Night of the Living Dead (1968) - ***** (DVD - 4:30 pm)
Tagline : They keep coming back in a bloodthirsty lust for HUMAN FLESH!...
Comments : Several strangers band together in a farmhouse to escape zombies roaming the area. Another classic that I can't add anything that hasn't been said before. I don't watch this movie nearly enough.

73. Dawn of the Dead (1978) - **** (DVD - 6:00 am)
Tagline : When there's no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth.
Comments : Survivors take refuge in a shopping mall while the dead gather outside. Funny and gory, although very stylized gore in this one. Only complaint is that it does drag on a bit in some scenes but very well done.

74. Day of the Dead (1985) - **** (DVD - 9:00 pm)
Tagline : The Dead have waited. The day has come.
Comments : Scientists and military in an underground bunker conduct experiments on the dead and search for other survivors. This one was not as well received in theatres but I really like it. Yes, some of the characters are very unlikeable, but necessary to show the strained conditions of the circumstances. Very gory with an excellent job by Savini - more realistic than the dayglo colors of Dawn of the Dead.

Friday - October 22

75. Smash Cut (2009) - No Stars (DVD - 10:30 pm) 1st Time Viewing / 31 Films Subset
Tagline : Lights ... Camera ... Body Parts
Comments : A director snaps and results to killing and dismembering to get his masterpiece made. I didn't like this one at all - bad acting and horrible execution. Insulting.
Saturday - October 23

76. Fright Night (1985) - **** (DVD - 12:00 pm) 31 Films Subset
Tagline : There are some very good reasons to be afraid...of the dark.
Comments : When a vampire moves in next door, Charlie Brewster has to enlist the talents of a late-night TV host to help destroy him. I've always loved this movie. Funny, good makeup effects, and some good performances. Some effects are dated but it still is a fun one to watch.

77. The Seventh Victim (1943) - *** (DVD - 2:00 pm) 1st Time Viewing / 31 Films Subset
Tagline : SLAVE to SATAN!
Comments : A girl goes to New York to search for her sister and uncovers a sinister group responsible for her disappearance. Pretty good movie with good atmosphere. More a mystery than a horror movie.

78. Demons (1985) - *** (DVD - 3:30 pm) 31 Films Subset
Tagline : They will make cemeteries their cathedrals and the cities will be your tomb
Comments : During a special screening at a movie theater, audience members are attacked and turned into demons. Good, not great, Italian gore movie. Some unintentionally funny dubbing adds to the fun.

79. Demons 2 (1986) - ** (DVD - 5:00 pm)
Tagline : The Nightmare Returns
Comments : A group of tenants and visitors are trapped in a 10-story high-rise apartment building infested with demons who proceed to hunt the dwindling humans down. If you liked the first, then it's more of the same.

80. Ginger Snaps (2000) - **** (DVD - 6:30 pm) 31 Films Subset
Tagline : She's got the curse
Comments : Sisters are attacked by a werewolf in a small Canadian town. I usually don't like werewolf movies, but I really enjoyed this one. Funny, gory, and very well done low-budget film.
81. Ginger Snaps II: Unleashed (2004) - **** (DVD - 8:00 pm)
Tagline : It only dies if you do.
Comments : Bridgette tries to resist the werewolf curse when she is locked up in rehab. Very dark sequel does not go where you expect from the original - and that's a good thing. Ginger appears only in a few brief cameos.

82. Ginger Snaps Back (2004) - *** (DVD - 10:30 pm)
Tagline : The Beginning
Comments : Ginger and Bridgette arrive at a military fort in the 1800's that is under attack by a horde of werewolves. Not as impressed with this one, mainly the story. It sounds like it involves time travel, but it does not. A let down from the previous two stories.

Sunday - October 24

83. Hellbent (2004) - *** (DVD - 12:30 pm)
Tagline : When The Night Belongs To The Devil, The Party Goes To Hell.
Comments : 4 guys are stalked during a Halloween parade/party in West Hollywood. Billed as the first gay slasher film, it's actually not that bad. Plenty of gore and some funny bits, good killer, and a likeable cast.

84. Flowers in the Attic (1987) - *** (DVD - 8:30 am) 31 Films Subset
Tagline : The one truth they have yet to face is the terror no one could imagine.
Comments : A widow and her four children go to live with her strict religious wealthy parents. Some events depicted in the book have been watered down a bit, but not too bad. Very claustrophobic setting and the movie mostly falls on the shoulders of the two oldest kids. Louise Fletcher is great as the cruel grandmother.

85. Arachnophobia (1990) - **** (DVD - 10:00 am)
Tagline : Eight legs, two fangs and an attitude.
Comments : A doctor moves with his family to the country where a new species of spider is causing mysterious deaths. Funny with some genuinely creepy moments. Good cst and production make this a fun movie that's not too scary for the younger kids.
86. Jeepers Creepers (2001) - **** (DVD - 12:00 pm)
Tagline : Fear takes a road trip.
Comments : A brother and sister encounter a vicious creature on their way home from college. THe first hour is the best in this movie. Some creepy moments and pretty sick settings. Loved the underground lair.

87. Jeepers Creepers 2 (2003) - *** (DVD - 1:30 pm)
Tagline : He can taste your fear.
Comments : A bus of kids is terrorized by the creeper on the same remote highway as in the original film. Pretty good sequel goes over the top on the gore effects. Some of it works well, but other parts are just ok. Nice setup for another sequel.

88. I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) - *** (DVD - 3:00 pm)
Tagline : He's got a hook on them...
Comments : Four seniors try to cover up a tragic accident until someone comes back to remind them of their actions. I actually felt that this one held up pretty well. Like it more now than when I saw it originally.

89. I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998) - ** (DVD - 5:00 pm)
Tagline : Some secrets will haunt you forever
Comments : Julie James is again terrorized by the events that she took part in covering up. Lame sequel that starts off well enough, but goes downhill pretty fast. Jack Black is just misplaced and the wrap-up really blows. Some major miscasting.

90. The Faculty (1998) - **** (DVD - 6:30 pm)
Tagline : Six students are about to find out their teachers really are from another planet.
Comments : Students begin to suspect that the teachers and staff at the school are far from normal. Very fun spin on the body snatchers theme. Excellent cast and pretty good job of building up the paranoia. Better than I remembered.
91. Ghostbusters (1984) - **** (DVD - 8:00 pm)
Tagline : They're Here To Save The World.
Comments : After losing their university positions, a team of scientists embark on a career as ghost catchers. Funny with a perfect cast, great one-liners, and nice effects (mostly still effective). It looks like everyone had fun making this one.

92. Ghostbusters II (1989) - *** (DVD - 9:45 pm)
Tagline : Be ready to believe us.
Comments : 5 years later, and the ghostbusters have gone out of business but are needed to save New York once again. Not as good as the first, but better than what I remembered. Having all the original players back is a big plus. Kinda silly but still fun enough.

Monday - October 25

93. Gojira (Godzilla) (1954) - *** (DVD - 4:30 pm) 1st Time Viewing / 31 Films Subset
Tagline : The legend begins....
Comments : A large lizard-like beast terrorizes Tokyo. I had never seen this before(!) and was mixed on it for the most part. Some good model work and B/W photography, but only comes to life when Godzilla is destroying things.

94. Leviathan (1989) - *** (DVD - 6:00 pm)
Tagline : Welcome to your worst nightmare, welcome to Leviathan
Comments : Deep sea miners uncover a sunken ship and unleash a genetic experiment gone wrong. Very good set design and some well-known faces, but the story is a huge copy of "Alien" and "The Thing" underwater. Silly, but I liked it mostly.

95. Friday the 13th (2009) - *** (DVD - 7:45 pm)
Tagline : Welcome to Crystal Lake
Comments : A group of friends and a man searching for his sister at Crystal Lake come up against Jason. Not bad, but some missed opportunities in this one. A slew of standard sterotype characters, although fast moving Jason is a nice touch.
96. The Exorcist (1973) - ***** (DVD - 9:30 pm)
Tagline : Something beyond comprehension is happening to a little girl on this street, in this house. A man has been called for as a last resort to try and save her. That man is The Exorcist.
Comments : A priest comes to the aid of a 12 year old girl who appears possessed. Nothing compares to this film. Incredible performances and a very slow build with atmosphere and scares that linger long after viewing. Many films have tried to duplicate it, but this is one that still has the power to scare.

Tuesday - October 26

97. Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982) - ** (DVD - 4:30 pm)
Tagline : The night no one comes home.
Comments : A mask maker has plans to play the ultimate deathly prank on an unsuspecting public. This was such a wasted opportunity. I understand the original thought of turning the Halloween film series into a brand, rather than a sequel machine. Still, it really fails when held up to the original and even the respectable second film. Some good actors are wasted.

98. The Devil's Backbone (2001) - **** (DVD - 6:00 pm) 31 Films Subset
Tagline : The living will always be more dangerous than the dead.
Comments : A young boy goes to live in an orphanage during the war and is given an ominous warning by a ghost. I enjoyed this move, and this was my second time to see it, but I don't think I was really in the mood to watch it. Plays more like a drama than a horror movie, but good if you know what to expect. Maybe I am just getting burn-out here at the end of the month.

99. House of 1000 Corpses (2003) - *** (DVD - 8:00 pm)
Tagline : The most shocking tale of carnage ever seen.
Comments : Four kids traveling across Texas and come across the legend of Doctor Satan and the psychotic Firefly clan. This movie gets very strange as it goes along, but I enjoy it. Not as good as the sequel, but still pretty raw and brutal.

100. The Devil's Rejects (2005) - **** (DVD - 9:30 pm)
Tagline : Hell doesn't want them. Hell doesn't need them. Hell doesn't love them. This world rejects them.
Comments : The Firefly clan are on the run with a Texas sheriff letting nothing get in his way of stopping them. Very different in tone and style from the first and all the better for it. Just as brutal and violent, but extreme dark humor along the way. Some uncomfortable moments, but worth a watch, even if you don't care for the original.
Wednesday - October 27

101. Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988) - *** (DVD - 4:30 pm)
Tagline : Ten Years Ago HE Changed The Face Of Halloween. Tonight HE'S BACK!
Comments : Michael returns to Haddonfield to kill his adolescent niece. Decent sequel has atmosphere and a pretty good beginning but drags in the middle. A nice return to the original story line after the third one.

102. Splinter (2008) - **** (DVD - 6:00 pm) 31 Films Subset
Tagline : It will get under your skin.
Comments : 2 couples are trapped by a parasite in a remote gas station. Gory film is pretty good, and very short. Leads are good and the effects are well done. Covers some familiar ground but does so in an interesting and entertaining way.

103. Poltergeist (1982) - ***** (DVD - 7:30 pm)
Tagline : It Knows What Scares You
Comments : Suburban family's home is invaded by malevolent spirits that concentrate on their youngest daughter. Now this is more like it! I love this movie and remember seeing it at the theatre back in '82. Some effects are dated but it has aged pretty well. Strong storytelling and excellent performances make this a winner all around. Hopefully, the dreaded rumored remake will vanish into the closet light!

104. Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986) - *** (DVD - 9:30 pm)
Tagline : They're Back
Comments : One year later and the family is terrorizrd again by the restless spirits. I like parts of this movie but it is extremely flawed. Would love to see the rumored extended cut, if it even exists. A shame since it has a great cast and one creepy villain played by Julien Beck. Goldsmith's score is top notch as well - it's just the story that really disappoints. Not a total loss though.

Thursday - October 28

105. Troll 2 (1990) - ** (DVD - 4:30 pm)
Tagline : The original boogeyman is back
Comments : In the town of Nilbog, the residents REALLY like the tourists, and one family is about to experience their hospitality. I HATED this movie last year, but after reading so many things about it, I decided to throw it in the mix again this year. Just as awful, but hysterical now that I know what to expect. Painfully bad in just about every sense!
106. Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989) - ** (DVD - 6:00 pm)
Tagline : Michael Lives, And This Time They're Ready!
Comments : One year after the last installment, Michael again tries to destroy his young niece. This one is a mess but nowhere near as bad as 'Resurrection'. Makers tried to do something with the 'man in black', but it never really pays off, even in the next sequel.

107. Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981) - **** (DVD - 7:45 pm) 1st Time Viewing / 31 Films Subset
Tagline : The Original Classic
Comments : After a man is killed, the ones responsible are tormented by someone or something that seems to be out for revenge. I had never seen this and was very impressed with this made-for-tv film. You won't find the graphic gore but it doesn't need it at all. Such a shock to see Charles Durning in this type of role.

108. The Evil Dead (1981) - **** (DVD - 9:15 pm)
Tagline : Can They Be Stopped?
Comments : While vacationing in a secluded cabin in the woods, five people unleash the evil dead. What else can be said about this one? I have not seen this one in a while and had forgotten how gory it is. Funny and doesn't waste any time getting going.

Friday - October 29

109. The House of the Devil (2009) - **** (DVD - 8:30 am)
Tagline : Talk on the phone. Finish your homework. Watch T.V. DIE!
Comments : When a college student answers an ad to babysit, she gets much more than she bargained for in the spooky house in the country. The first hour is pretty slow but builds tension that way. Great job of making a retro horror movie with a low budget.

110. The Monster Squad (1987) - **** (DVD - 10:45 am) 31 Films Subset
Tagline : The End of the World Starts at Midnight
Comments : Young kids are fascinated by monsters and then must battle them when they actually appear in their town. Funny movie that I missed when it was originally released. Didn't care one way or the other upon first viewing, but actually enjoy it more and more each time I see it. Add it to the neverending list of upcoming remakes.
111. Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995) - ** (DVD - 12:15 pm)
Tagline : Six times the terror... Six times the fear... Six times the thrills...
Comments : Michael returns to Haddonfield again to hunt down his final living relative, a baby, and also has to deal with a would-be victim from his past. I would love to see them release a quality version of the producer's cut of this one. So much last minute editing is apparent and the story gets more convoluted as it goes along.

112. Alien (1979) - ***** (BR - 4:30 pm)
Tagline : In Space No One Can Hear You Scream
Comments : I have seen this movie more times than I can remember and I always find something new to it. A deep space mining crew is awakened from hypersleep to investigate a strange signal from a distant planet. They bring back an unwanted creature that destroys the crew one by one. This is a true classic that never fails to impress or entertain.

113. Aliens (1986) - ***** (BR - 6:30 pm)
Tagline : There are some places in the universe you don't go alone.
Comments : A rare case when a sequel actually measures up to the original. After 57 years in suspended hypersleep, Ellen Ripley returns to the planet where the alien was first encountered. Only this time, she's part of a rescue crew of marines investigating the lack of communication with the colonists that have settled the planet. This one is hard to beat on every level and really is a roller coaster ride of a movie! Sigourney Weaver is excellent as are the effects and story. A classic that never gets old for me.

114. Alien3 (1992) - **** (BR - 9:00 pm)
Tagline : This time it's hiding in the most terrifying place of all.
Comments : Ripley crash lands on a prison planet with an alien on board her escape vehicle. As the creature grows and begins dispatching the prisoners, Ripley begins to understand a more horrifying connection with the alien. Underappreciated upon original release, this one still has a terrific performance by Sigourney Weaver and great atmosphere. Although it is flawed, I still enjoy it for the most part. The Special Edition is a definite improvement but effects are not up to the first two films.

115. Alien Resurrection (1997) - *** (BR - 11:00 pm)
Tagline : Witness the Resurrection.
Comments : 200 years later, Ellen Ripley is cloned to harvest the alien embryo inside. When the aliens prove too smart for their captors, a small group of smugglers have to find a way to escape an infested ship as well as deal with a Ripley that may not have their best interests in mind. This movie had potential but unfortunately is another step down from the others. Some over-the-top acting and a few bad one liners don't help. Has its moments, both good and bad. I can still get into it but had hoped for a bit more. Again, Weaver does her best and the effects are great.
Saturday - October 30

116. Halloween: Resurrection (2002) - * (DVD - 9:00 am)
Tagline : Evil Finds Its Way Home.
Comments : Six college students spend the evening in the Myer's house as part of a internet reality show, only Michael shows up as well. This is by far the lowest point of the franchise for me. Didn't like what they did with Jamie Lee Curtis' character and the remainder of the film is just awful. Not hard to see why it sat on the shelf for a while before getting released.

117. The Ring (2002) - **** (DVD - 12:30 pm)
Tagline : Before you die, you see the ring.
Comments : A journalist investigates a videotape that causes death seven days after watching it. I forgot how much I enjoyed this one. Watts is pretty good but the little boy is very creepy. One of the better American remakes of a Japanese horror film.

118. The Last Exorcism (2010) - ** (Theater - 4:00 pm) 1st Time Viewing / 31 Films Subset
Tagline : Believe In Him.
Comments : A reverend has a film crew follow him to a southern farm to document the exorcism of a 16 year old girl. Getting very tired of the whole documentary-crew-follows-_____ genre. Not bad but just another attempt to milk the Blair Witch style.

119. The Silence of the Lambs (1991) - ***** (DVD- 7:00 pm)
Tagline : Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Brilliant. Cunning. Psychotic. In his mind lies the clue to a ruthless killer. - Clarice Starling, FBI. Brilliant. Vulnerable. Alone. She must trust him to stop the killer.
Comments : A young FBI trainee interviews a notorious serial killer to help capture another killer. One of the best movies I've personally ever seen. Everything about this one is just so well-done. Still scary, creepy, and filled with dark humor. Performances are great.

120. Hannibal (2001) - *** (DVD- 9:00 pm)
Tagline : Break The Silence.
Comments : Disgraced FBI agent Clarice Starling is on the hunt for Dr. Lechter. Well, nowhere near as good as the first film. Would have liked to have had Jodie Foster back but Julianne Moore does the best she can. Has its moments but can't match the original.

121. Rosemary's Baby (1968) - ***** (DVD- 11:30 pm)
Tagline : Pray for Rosemary's Baby.
Comments : After moving into a new apartment building, a young woman becomes pregnant and very suspicious of the people around her. Very eerie and creepy film that holds your interest from beginning to end. Still just as good now. Excellent performances by all.
Sunday - October 31

122. Night of the Demons (1988) - ** (DVD - 10:00 am) 1st Time Viewing / 31 Films Subset
Tagline : Angela is having a party, Jason and Freddy are too scared to come. But You'll have a hell of a time.
Comments : A group of teenagers hold a Halloween party in an abandoned mortuary. Pretty bad, although some make up effects were good for the time. Pretty much straight formula with some wooden acting. At times, can't tell if this is a dark comedy or just amateurish. Best part is the animated title credits.

123. Trick 'r Treat (2007) - **** (DVD - 12:15 pm)
Tagline : Poison, Drowning, Claw, Or Knife. So Many Ways To Take A Life.
Comments : A group of interconnected tales that occur on Halloween night where each person or groups gets something more than they expected. Twisted little film was a favorite from last year's challenge and now part of the annual tradition. Enjoyed it just as much the second time around.

124. Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist (2005) - *** (DVD - 4:00 pm) 1st Time Viewing
Tagline : A new chapter of evil .
Comments : A church is discovered that was buried years ago by Father Merrin. Slow moving but interesting story is undone with bad CGI (a result of the film being abandoned and reshot). Still, more a drama than horror for the most part.

125. Halloween (1978) - ***** (DVD - 6:15 pm)
Tagline : The Night HE Came Home.
Comments : A masked killer stalks babysitters on Halloween night. After Psycho, this movie really kicked off the modern slasher film. Suspense, characters, and scares take priority over gore (which there isn't really any to speak of). None of the sequels, remakes, or knock-offs have been able to duplicate this one for me. A tradition of watching this on Halloween since it's original release, it is always a treat!

126. Halloween II (1981) - **** (DVD - 6:15 pm)
Tagline : More Of The Night He Came Home.
Comments : Michael continues his killing spree, tracking Laurie down in the local hospital. Maybe it's just me, but hospitals have always been eerie to me. The unnerving quiet is tough for me. I like this sequel as it just keeps the original story going. Although not as effective as the first, its still a good entry in the series.

127. Halloween: 20 Years Later (1998) - *** (DVD - 9:00 pm)
Tagline : 20 years ago, HE changed the face of Halloween. Tonight, he's back!
Comments : Laurie Strode changes her name and goes into hiding, trying to deal with her past, only to have Michael return to finish what he started. Some nice touches and great to have Curtis back but the film doesn't quite hold up. The movie only kicks into gear for the last 20 minutes or so, but it has its moments.
