Since reviews are written before the games' servers have truly been battletested, they have to be scored on assumptions that the servers will behave as well at launch as they do during the review period. If that assumption proves to be false, it makes sense that the score would be adjusted accordingly. Short of delaying reviews until after launch, posting the review but delaying the score, or reviewing/scoring multiplayer separately, I'm not sure there's a better way to handle this.

I don't have a problem with that as the game is largely unplayable, at least as it was conceived and marketed. I don't know what else you would do. I just think they should revise the score back if it gets fixed to the point of functionality that the original review score indicated.
Either way, DriveClub has bigger problems than its Metacritic score.

Yeah I don't have a problem with review scores changing either. Video games are no longer fixed points in time.

I love when I get a faceoff where I'm supposed to beat a score of 7,000 MPH or something. Apparently there are some gaffes where the faceoffs will say "mph" and be based on speed but list a drifting score. Still getting disconnected three weeks after launch. It's crazy how not-ready-for-prime time this sucker is.

Not-so-great update from Shuhei Yoshida:
Hi everyone,
I wanted to provide you with the latest update on DRIVECLUB. Unfortunately, the road to launch has been a little rocky, and we are truly sorry that so many of you have not been able to enjoy everything that we had hoped DRIVECLUB would deliver.
We have been listening to your feedback and realize that patience understandably is running out. Evo is working around the clock to close the gap, and we have deployed additional engineering resources to help resolve the remaining issues as soon as possible. Unfortunately, the time frames required to roll out the fully connected experience will be longer than anticipated and we do not have an exact time frame for when they will be resolved. We will continue to update you on progress and you can find the latest info on the DRIVECLUB Facebook page.
We are also very conscious that we have disappointed so many of you who were looking forward to playing the promised PS Plus Edition. Our first priority is to provide you with the best possible experience while playing DRIVECLUB. With the high volume of new players and additional server load the PS Plus Edition is anticipated to bring, we are currently not confident that we can guarantee the best online experience. Until we can ensure that everyone can enjoy the full social connected online experience, we will be postponing the release of the PS Plus Edition until further notice.
On behalf of WWS we are enormously grateful for your patience and we thank you for the continued support and encouragement. Again, we sincerely apologize for the delay. We are committed to giving you the best racing experience on PS4 – it’s taking a little longer than we hoped.
Thanks,
Shu

At this point, they need to cut their losses and release the full version as a PS+ game and issue refunds for anyone who bought the retail or digital versions. That is the only shot this game has of being successful. At least people would be more inclined to buy DLC down the line. As of now, no one is going to go near this game with the reputation it has, even if they would fix it next week.

It hard to imagine a high-profile console gmae screwing things up more than this one did. And it's not even the standard launch screw-up of DRM or MMO hiccups -- this is a game that clearly wasn't ready to work as advertised. And it's Sony's only Next gen console exclusive of the season. Amazing.
They're SO lucky that they didn't bundle that game with the console in NA. That would ahve been a PR disaster for Sony in a way this game by itself doesn't appear to be (it's just a failure instead). I wonder if the Euros are more forgiving, as they got the bundle.

I got my refund. Curiously I still seem to have access to the game. Of course online is still fucked though.

The new DLC location is going to be Japan. I was really hoping the pre-release buzz that it'd be Antigua would pan out, just because I just went there for my honeymoon a little over a month ago.

To be fair, the folks designing assets and stuff for the DLC probably have little-to-nothing to do with the netcode side of things. We didn't get the free track for October, though, so who knows?
Japan was accidentally revealed in a video showcasing weather / photo mode.

They have a DLC schedule and they should follow it. The people involved with DLC and the people involved with networking should not be the same people. Although, in this case, maybe they are, and that may explain some of their issues.

I'm not saying "all hands on the network deck!". I know the DLC designers have nothing to do with netcode.
I just remember SimCity trying to release DLC while that game was still broken and they were crucified for it.

So what about those poor suckers who bought a season pass then? They should get further screwed?

#update
hi everyone,
the team at evolution continues to work diligently to resolve all of the server issues. We know you have all been extremely patient and understandably frustrated during driveclub’s launch, and to show our appreciation for the support during this challenging time, we will be offering the premium dlc packs for november (25th november-scea/26th november-scee/27th november-scej) free to those who purchased the full game.
these premium dlc packs – the ignition expansion pack and photo-finish tour pack along with two livery packs – will give you a total of five new cars, 22 new tour events, 10 new trophies and 10 new livery items to play with online and offline.
The season pass will be extended to include four extra packs in july 2015 to ensure players who purchased the pass get everything that was promised. So on top of the free dlc in november, the season pass will still include 38 cars, 176 tour events and 80 unique liveries.
On tuesday we will also be releasing our next game update which includes our first round of player requested feature updates.
In addition to photo mode, which will allow you to share your most thrilling moments with your friends, we will be adding:
• improved multiplayer collision physics to reduce frustrating spin-outs
• adjustments to soften the corner cutting penalty system
• options in the club menu to view everything your club has unlocked
• a fix to allow all club owners to update their club badges
this update also includes the first new tracks, which we announced back in september as part of our plans to keep supporting and expanding the game as you play. These include the following free new tracks for online and offline play (also playable in reverse):
• india – yedepalli
• scotland – wester ross
• chile – los pelambres
although currently we do not have an update regarding the timing for the launch of the ps plus edition, we are continually working on improving the server capacity to enable us to launch the ps plus edition as quickly as possible.
once again, thank you for your support. We are truly sorry that the road to delivering the full driveclub racing experience on ps4 has been such a rocky one.

I really feel bad for everyone working on the DLC for this game. They are dumping soooo many hours into stuff that no one is going to touch.

I'm sure a handful of the 650,000 or so owners of the game will buy the DLC. So like, 15 people.

Well, I rented this game from Redbox today -- partly out of morbid curiosity and partly to have a game save file that would allow me to get the free DLC when it launches.
Don't really like the game much. It looks beautiful but it's so punitive docking you for every perceived mistake you might make even if you improve your position. It's not much fun getting constantly scolded. I agree it's a way better experience with the hood view rather than the in-car view. If I had gotten PS Plus version, I certainly wouldn't have bought the full version based on my experience so far.

There's a lot of DRIVECLUB stuff that just went free, as their humble apology for the mess so far. Don't need to currently own the game to get the freebies. Check it out at the website here.

It's probably too late for this game to be anything but the butt of jokes even if it's only one of many broken games released this year, but damn, those weather effects are stunning.

One might say it's like rain... on your wedding day. Since it's the free ride, that none of us got to take. Because we already paid. Or something.
