Re: Say Hello to the Nintendo 2DS!
I'm torn. Our 6 year old loves to play Animal Crossing on my wife's 3DS XL, and she keeps the 3D off all the time anyways. We just hate to lose being able to close it to protect the screens. If there were something that would flip over it to cover them when not in use, it would be perfect.

Exactly. Be happy : It's the very first Nintendo handheld redesign (and there have been a LOT of them) that doesn't make you at all make you jealous or want to trade your current model in for the new one. That's alright in my book.

I love how gamers go crazy over the dumbest things. Nintendo isn't holding a gun to your head forcing you to buy it. The person that said it's gonna flop i think Nintendo probably did market research/ surveys to see how many people feel the 3-D is an important feature to have and how many parents complained their younger kids can't play it. Nintendo see's a group sizeable enough to make this a profitable sku.
I know what you're saying, though... most of us ridiculed the DS and 3DS as well (and to be perfectly honest, both the 3d and to a lesser extent, the dual screen were unneeded... the software was key).
I didn't really see the point in the DSi, personally.

Curiously, the 2DS is even more of a tablet-style system than it appears at first glance, as it actually features a single large screen in its center, not two separate ones. As one of their cost-cutting design measures, Nintendo reduced the number of screens in the system from two to one, and the appearance of separate screens is merely simulated by the way the case masks out the extraneous portions. This means the entire screen is by necessity a touchscreen, with the upper screen protected by a layer of plastic that sits above it.

I think it'll sell fine. Looks durable. I'd rather have my kid play on that ugly-ass thing for $130 than have him smear up and potentially drop my $600 iPad.
Besides, this gets Nintendo out of the last generation for good without having to be in the awkward position of trying to sell games to children on a system that they think might damage their eyesight.

No, more like the covers my folks have for their iPads. It's kinda strapped to it and it has a fold over cover. For the 2DS though I was thinking of something with a harder plastic that flipped over and latched in and could latch over the back also when not in use.

I have zero interest in this, but I can see it selling really well. I think its going to be a huge Christmas gift for little kids. I'm all for it. It will lead to more street passes.

We were discussing getting a 3DS for,our daughter for Christmas. We would absolutely buy this instead due to being cheaper. If it hits the 99$ price point I might be tempted to pick up a second me so we could all play some games together.

Re: Say Hello to the Nintendo 2DS!
Darn, I missed the fun... I just found out today I do have a 3DS XL and if I have known Nintendo is going to make a 2DS, I would have waited... I've never once used the 3D mode on my 3DS XL. Of course, it would be super duper silly if Nintendo announced this at the same time as the 3DS. You know what? I think maybe because of the Nintendo reward coin questions. Of all the 3DS games I purchased, to the question "do you use 3D?" I always answer NO, strictly 2D only. I guess Nintendo listened to me, hahaha.
For the record, I'm not saying 3D is not enjoyable, it's just not enjoyable on the handheld. I've no problems watching 3D movies, love them as a matter of fact (only if the ticket prices are lower ). I also enjoy 3D movies at home as well.

I actually just ordered one of these for my son for Christmas. His old DS has seen better days, so the timing was right. Plus, he was bummed that he was missing out on a lot of games by not having a 3DS. Not being a big fan of 3D, this worked out perfectly.
