Agree with those about the ice world...pain in the arse. I found myself more frustrated last night than joyous...which should never be the case with a Mario game. I'll keep at it though...f'n sliding penguins.

Yeah its frustrating but addicting, I guess I just like to inflict pain on myself.

I didn't have a problem with finishing World 3, what I have a problem with is getting all the Star Coins on those ice boards. Grrr...

I keep forgetting that I can throw a turtle-shell at a coin to obtain it rather than having to touch it.

Yeah, the two biggest keys to get certain hard to obtain, seemingly impossible, star coins are the shell toss and the propeller power.

I'm shocked so many of you dislike the ice world. I've always had a blast in the ice worlds in Mario games. One of my favorite star coins to get was in the ice world, and was pretty clever.

Was it the one where you have to freeze a sliding penguin, ride it over a chasm, grab the coin and wall jump out before falling? That was a good one - I felt all smart when I figured out what to do, and then felt like a stud when I pulled it off on my first try.

In World 6, at one point, Mario lost his hat. It came back when I died, but how do you go and retrieve it?

I was wondering how to get that one. Thanks for the tip

Once you hit 99 lives, Mario no longer has his hat. He gets it back once you die, you have less than 99 lives, and you play a level again.

Imagine what would happen if Princess Peach reached 99 lives and lost something...

Re: New Super Mario Bros. Wii thread of old school gaming goodness

Does anyone know why this isn't available through Amazon anymore? I want to get it for my wife for Christmas, and that was the best option (not that I can't go to the stores or anything..). I just find it odd that it's not available there.

Got this for Christmas, but I'm at my Dad's, without my Wii.

Can't wait to finally play it.

Re: New Super Mario Bros. Wii thread of old school gaming goodness

It's not that hard. I've maxed out my lives at 99 and am halfway through world 6. The only thing that is tough are some of the Star Coins. I think I'm missing about a half dozen so far. I think I have all of them in 1, 3 & 5.

Oh and the Toad levels are a bitch, especially the one in world 2. I still haven't finished that one.

Re: New Super Mario Bros. Wii thread of old school gaming goodness

Got this for Christmas as well. About halfway through the ice world, and so far the game isn't too hard at all. This is SMB we're talking about, after all, and some of the older entries in this series rank among the most challenging games of all time.

I've gotten a good percentage of the star coins so far, but nowhere near all of them. Haven't made a big effort to get the more difficult ones either. Maybe I shouldn't ask this if there's a surprise/spoiler involved, but do they eventually DO anything other than unlocking hint videos? Yes or no answer would probably suffice.
