New Super Mario Bros. Wii thread of old school gaming goodness

Surprised there wasn't a thread yet on this new Wii game:

<object classid="clsid27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" width="437" height="291" id="viddler"><param name="movie" value="http://www.viddler.com/player/3c6f7e50/" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><embed src="http://www.viddler.com/player/3c6f7e50/" width="437" height="291" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowScriptAccess="always" allowFullScreen="true" name="viddler" ></embed></object>

November 11th only a month away!

Will play through single player first of course. But I have a co-worker at my job who loves old school Mario. I'm gonna plan a party where we can all get together and play the game all the way through.

Anyone else planning a Mario party?

Perhaps with enough demand they'll put in a patch for online? Write an angry letter to Nintendo!

Re: New Super Mario Bros. Wii thread of old school gaming goodness

I don't care about the co-op play at all.

It's a freakin' traditional 2D Mario console game for the first time in years. Give it to me, now!

I'm not sure if your is a sign that you know the Wii doesn't support game patches.

I am so getting this for my wife and I to play! Mario games don't need online co-op in my opinion!

They talk about this on the latest Giant Bombcast. Basically saying the game wouldn't be fun without people in the room, because you can actively help or completely screw them over. Playing online wouldn't be the same at all.

Re: New Super Mario Bros. Wii thread of old school gaming goodness

Can't they come up with a new name? My kids have every Mario title from the 64 up (including handhelds) and so many sound the same. While I don't play our Wii, I like the Mario Galaxy title because it was easily distinguishable...'Hey, let's play Galaxy (or Sunshine on Cube)'.

Mario Party was already taken It's meant to be name recognition for the casual Wii owners.

As long as it's geared more towards the single-player experience than co-op, I'm in!

Even if there was online play, i'm sure it would be terrible like Smash Bros.

I'm still looking forward to it, given how awesome New Super Mario Bros. was on the DS. I haven't been a fan of any of the 3D Mario games at all, so a side scrolling one is right up my alley.

ONM review:

http://www.nintendoeverything.com/?p=26180

Final score - 96%

- “timeless Mario magic is present”
- “looks and sounds incredible”
- “starts easy, ends hard as nails”
- would have liked more Yoshi

This looks interesting, but is it just the DS game converted for the Wii or something new? BTW, they let you use the virtual console controller, right?

Re: New Super Mario Bros. Wii thread of old school gaming goodness

This is a brand new game for the WIi, not the DS game that was released a while back just updated for the Wii. It has the same art style it seems, but that's about it from what I can tell. It's the first 2D side scrolling Mario game for a home console since SMW for the SNES back in 1991.

Gimmie, gimmie, gimmie!

Never played those and can't recall them in SMW.

Did you forget about SMW2: Yoshi's Island from 1995, or do you just not count it as part of the series?
