I'm looking to get a PS3 and I've been trying to read as much as I can to make the right decision as to which one to get, the 40GB or the 80GB. I still have my old PS2 so backwards compatibility isn't on the top of my list and I want it for Blu-ray discs more than anything else. My question is if I get the 40GB version will PS2 games from the PSN be playable or does backward compatibility effect both discs and downloads? My local store has one left of each but I was thinking of buying from Sonystyle to get the $100 discount if I buy the 40GB.

I hope you're right, for everyone's sake. But the fact is the hardware has changed since the first 80gb models hit. Right now the latest model has no PS2 compatibility. If the MGS4 80gb bundle is a continuation of that line, all the better.

The 80GB models still have software B/C. The 40GB is the only one that has no PS2 B/C.

And that contradicts what I said how? Actually, that's exactly what I said.
Edit: On second read, this sounds harsher than it is. I'm drunk and pissed, but I ain't mad at ya.

The MGS4 bundle is an 80 GB unit, not a 40.

*sigh*
that = the 80gb line = the one with PS2 compatibility.
Jesus people. The point I'm making is the 40gb came after the "first 80gb" models (the ones with PS2 s/w BC).
The typical trend is to reduce costs on the production line. If the 40gb came after the original 80gb, history shows that's what we'll get.
If there's a "new" 80gb coming, the best I have to go on is that the latest model (40gb non-BC) will just have a 80gb hdd in it.
Never-fucking-mind. I guess the rumor of "similar" is good enough.
I need to pass out.

I really put this down to the fact that Sony must still have a large back log of 80GBs in the pipe, as I'm quite sure that a BC PS3 is not in their future plans.

like the 360s you're describing.

All this bickering about 80 GB vs 40 GB... which has BC and which doesn't.... which will be packed in with MGS4....
....it only leads to one conclusion, Sony has gone through waaaaay too many SKUs. The people on this forum are generally more knowledgeable than the average consumer, and if we can't even keep all the different SKUs straight ourselves, then how is the average consumer supposed to do so?

It would seem that Sony doesn't yet have a pure software BC solution, but at the same time it's rumoured that they will eventually have something available. However this would only be to allow them to sell selected PS2 titles via the PS Store and wouldn't be available for retail disc copies.

The "software" BC model only includes the PS2 graphics synthesizer GPU. It does not include PS2's "Emotion Engine" CPU chip. So it does not have all of the PS2 hardware on board.

I don't think there's an official Folklore thread (I couldn't find it in a search), so I'll ask it here ...
How does the DLC integrate into the game? Is it just added in to various points of the game, or can I go straight to the new stuff from the menu? I'm just wondering if I should buy the DLC before I start playing the game or if I can wait until later.

That's a decent price? Looks like MSRP to me. Where's the pre-order discount? Also, looks like Amazon is taking pre-orders on Final Fantasy Versus 13 already.
