Primary characters are Ann Romano and her two daughters Julie & Barbara and the building superintendent Schneider.
First couple seasons had her divorce lawyer, David (Richard Masur) who had a crush on her, and a neighbor Ginnie. Both left early.
Mid seasons had her boss and co-workers, including John Hillerman (Higgins from Magnum PI).
Later seasons brought in the girls' boyfriends/husbands. Ann's work rival (Shelly Faberes from Donna Reed and Coach) became a friend/regular. Her mother (Nanette Fabray) became a regular and the son of her deceased boyfriend became a regular when Julie was written out and Barbara grew up (cousin Oliver syndrome).

Some old sitcom themes are just too dated to be of much interest to today's audiences. Could you image someone trying to do a reboot of Three's Company. a guy living with two girls is not that unusal or controversial anymore.

Regardless how this compares to the original - the trailer makes the show look bad. It looks cheesy and the jokes seem too forced and very recycled.

And only watching these shows in reruns in the late 80s and early 90s it seemed like every show in this era had to have a cocky-but-good-natured Italian teenage boy show up at some point in the shows run.

The last few seasons they must have saved $ on Valerie's jeans budget and used blue paint instead. I have no idea how she breathed but I wasn't complaining. It introduced me to the concept of camel toe.

It will cost them a fortune now if they want her to guest star on the show.

Netflix is staging a key One Day at a Time reunion.
Original series star Mackenzie Phillips is returning to the Norman Lear franchise for the streaming giant's revival, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
But there's a catch. Phillips, an original series star who played rebellious eldest daughter Julie in the CBS original, will not be reprising her role. Instead, she will guest-star as Pam, a psychologist and leader of a female veterans' therapy group that Penelope (Justina Machado) reluctantly attends in a later episode. (Watch a first-look video of Phillips' return, above.)
Phillips' casting marks a key reunion with Lear, who was forced to fire the former series star during One Day at a Time's original run.
Netflix's reimagining of the iconic comedy revolves around three generations of a Cuban-American family living under one roof. Newly single mom and military veteran Penelope enlists the "help" of her old-school Cuba-born mother, Lydia (Rita Moreno), and building manager, Schneider (Todd Grinnell), while raising two millennials: her radical daughter Elena (Isabella Gomez) and socially inept son Alex (Marcel Ruiz). Lear, who created the original series, executive produces the revival alongside How I Met Your Mother's Gloria Calderon Kellett and Men of a Certain Age's Mike Royce.
The series debuts Jan. 6 on Netflix.

I guess it would be weird for Julie to discover another building manager named Schnieder.

Add me to the list of folks wondering what this has to do with the original. They didn't even reimagine the same theme song.
There was a storyline in there which caught my attention and could be a very good storyline: the returning veteran coming home and having to readjust to raising her children on her own. Since this appears to be pretty rote comedy, I imagine that will be buried quickly.
I'll just have to stick with "she is HAWT!"

Norman Lear is also considering Limited Series reboots of The Jeffersons, All in the Family, Maude and Good Times.
Norman Lear is also considering Limited Series reboots of The Jeffersons, All in the Family, Maude and Good Times.
Sony Pictures Television is in very early stages of rebooting several classic sitcoms from TV legend Norman Lear as miniseries — including “All in the Family,” “The Jeffersons,” and “Good Times” — Variety has learned exclusively.
The idea currently being discussed by Lear and Sony executives would be to have new actors recreate classic episodes of the shows, working from the original scripts, and package them as short, six-episode anthologies. The scripts would be treated similar to plays being mounted in new productions.
“There is some talk about doing some of the original shows, redoing them with today’s stars,” Lear told Variety. “There is a possibility that we’ll do ‘All in the Family,’ ‘Maude,’ ‘The Jeffersons,’ “Good Times.'”

Justina was Vanessa, Rico's wife, on Six Feet Under. She's good.

For those who really really need something to watch
This premieres today on Netflix. All 13 episodes.
dex14 could probably re-work the thread title a little bit.

I wish they would stream the original series. It might get people interested in the new series.

I heard an interview with one of the stars. She said that Schnieder "is the face of white privilege" on the show. He owns the building with money from his father or something.

Was Bonnie Franklin's mom character also in the armed forces?
The theme song is bad.
Show is ok
Anything with Steven Tobolowski is worth a watch.
Oh and Rita Moreno too

Rita Moreno doesn't exactly look 85. Kinda crazy.
This is actually one of the better "traditional" sitcoms I've seen in a while, mostly the acting -- while still with that broad delivery and audience pauses -- actually comes off way more natural than usual.

I'm really enjoying this! Not any weaknesses that I've been able to pick out thus far. The theme was a little weird at first, but I understand what they were doing with it. They simply had to keep the lyrics, and the music had to reflect the Cuban influence...and of course it had to be done by Gloria Estefan. It's grown on me after a few episodes.
I like the fact that they didn't try to copy the original series too much, otherwise they would have made her Ana Romero, and that would have been corny.
