Truth. It's like somebody at Paramount thought, "I think those guys over at WB have a good model for the DC properties. Let's run with that!" Although that may be a bit harsh. There are a lot of good Trek and Scifi people running the show and writing scripts.

The idea isn't to bring in new Trek fans, the idea is to extort existing Trek fans and get them to use CBS All Access.

From CBS president Les Moonves:

we’re confident that its large, passionate fan base will lead to substantial, profitable subscriber growth.

As I said before, while this may spike CBS All Access subscriptions in the short-term, the show will be heavily pirated so I wonder how much it will effect their overall user-base...

I'm not saying it's a good plan, but that's their plan.

With Netflix getting international rights, I don't see it being heavily pirated overseas, unless CBS does something stupid like delay the episodes internationally. The main problem isn't that it's going to be on a streaming service, it's that it's going to be on a streaming service most people don't already have.

Then Paramount/CBS is pretty fucking stupid. Considering the last Trek series petered out with public indifference 11 going on 12 years ago, one would think they'd be trying DESPERATELY to get as many eyes on their new product as possible.

So I wonder if this will be released all at once like Netflix and other streaming services release original programming or if they'll stagger the episodes.

They start production in September and it hits air in January. No way they will release it all at once. Usually takes about 6-8 months to shoot a TV season.

They'll release it weekly, because they want people to subscribe not binge it all in the free trial period.

I think so too. I'm pretty sure it's got less to do with production to premiere scheduling and more that CBS is hoping to milk fans into paying for their streaming service longer.

And smart people will wait until the season is done, sign up for a free trial, binge the shit out of it and never give CBS a dime. That is my plan.

That's my plan, although I may have to pay for a month for the 2nd season, since they may not offer a 2nd trial.

Also, I plan on signing up for the trial right before the season finale, so I can binge and catch up, then watch the finale as it "airs."

Even though we all know CBS is going to release this weekly, it wouldn't be physically possible to release all 13 episodes in January after only 4 months of filming.

By January they will probably have only 6 or 7 episodes in the can.

True, but their release plan probably informed their premiere date, instead of the other way around.

The comparison of production schedule to premiere date is pretty good confirmation of a weekly release schedule though.

Right but who says that they had to release it in January? It's obvious what they're doing. Giving fans a first taste by airing the first episode on CBS and then releasing it week to week in hopes that the diehards will be gullible enough to pay for the service over three months or so.

Bryan Fuller confirms it will premiere in January.

He also said it won't be episodic.

David Semel is directing the 1st episode. He's a journeyman TV director.

I've scoured many boards and the official Star Trek facebook page and I would say 95% of the fans are furious this is airing on CBS's streaming service and not on TV or a streaming service they already have like Netflix. With the recent announcement that it will be available on Netflix internationally, that has lightened the hate a little for the international fans.

I hope the CGI in that teaser isn't reflective of what we're getting in the new series. ENTERPRISE had better CGI than that.

Anyway, there's definitely a Klingon connection with that vessel (the music implies that as well). I wonder if we'll have our first Klingon captain or a primarily Klingon crew?

Fuller also said today that the new series takes place in the Prime Timeline, although he didn't say when...got to believe it's at least post-TNG though. However the NCC number is pretty low for a ship that would be post-TNG. So did something happen to the Federation and the remnants of it and the Klingon Empire scrapped together a ship built from an old Constitution class vessel and a Klingon warbird? Maybe.

re: Star Trek: Discovery -- from EP Bryan Fuller -- Coming to CBS All-Access in 2017

The Discovery looks almost exactly like Ralph McQuarrie's design for the Enterprise from "Planet of the Titans."

I'm guessing that, from the design of the ship and low registry number, that this takes place between Enterprise and TOS? I think that was the rumor, but this pretty much confirms it.

I believe Fuller confirmed that the design was indeed taken from McQuarrie. I think we'll all get used to the look of the ship. Let's face it, you won't hear many admit it today, but the design of the 1701-D for TNG was pretty negative when it was first revealed.

I'll reserve judgement until seeing the series but that is a pretty ugly design for the Discovery.

Even if the show isn't episodic (much like TOS and TNG) it will probably have recurring themes.
