Also, a problem I see with a Raj relationship is that the show goes a predictable route - opposite type characters, even with the moms in the show.

What exactly would the opposite of Raj be..?

I had heard of the term before, but only because there was an article about all the women that were going on about their top "shipper" wishes. Never thought I would see men willingly use the term.

For fuck's sake!

Most of this is copied from the site, but I made a few changes.

TV Tropes: "Shipping"
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Shipping

Rooting for fictional romance to happen.

The term "Shipping" was originally coined by fans of The X-Files, who were divided between "relationshippers" pushing for romance between Scully and Mulder, and "noromos" (no romance) who would rather have No Hugging and No Kissing.

The phenomenon itself existed in practically every fandom long before. The source of the term's popularity? Geek Mythology has it that you can blame people in the Pokémon anime's fandom who rooted for Jessie and James (of Team Rocket) to get together and decided to call themselves "Rocketshippers". This got the term to catch on in that fandom, then people brought it with them to other fandoms.

As far as omnipresent forces of nature go, Shipping is up there with Death and Taxes; an "Example Section" would just be a list of works popular enough to have fans that interact on internet forums.

TV Tropes lists more than 50 different Categories of Shipping. Not 50+ examples, mind you. 50+ different kinds of shipping that examples can be divided into.

I guess since the only time i discuss TV stuff is on these boards, it's where i would get most of my tv related terminology from.

google tells me there's only been about 10 instances (aside from this thread) of that term ever used on this site in the TV talk forum:

https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q...v-talk&start=0

And 'noromos'? fck that!

The term "shippers" has been around fandom at least since early seasons of Buffy. It's not new.

It's never been a problem for me that Sheldon is asexual. I know quite a few Aspies who are like that.

i think i had, and read cover-to-cover (except the Theater section), every issue of Entertainment Weekly from 1998-2002 and never once saw that word printed. Putting in that timeframe in google for EW.com, there is no mention of the word:

https://encrypted.google.com/search?...31%2F2002&tbm=

I'm not going to start buying magazines now nor will i read ad riddled entertainment / hollywood news sites

Being a tv sub-forum, I am suprised by how many did not know what 'shipper' was.

you know, that's gotta be what it is -- a term popular amongst women discussing shows.

all the examples in Count Dooku's post above (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/12604389-post107.html ) are by women, except the one for "We tracked down Orphan Black co-creator John Fawcett...". The one "21 Sweetest Shipper Moments of 2014" is compiled by 3 writers, all women.

I don't think anyone here doubts its existence. I'm just saying that it seems very obscure. 50 kinds or not. There are many kinds of a lot of things that nobody has heard of.

It's about fantasy relationships between characters, so of course it's more popular with women.

I don't watch the show, what was the scene in question anyway?

I'm usually out of the loop on these things, but I've been familiar with the term "shippers" for years.

Perhaps you misunderstood. I did not write: Get in a time machine, go back 15 years, and buy a magazine.

It's also big in the Harry Potter universe. The first time I saw it was in reference to the books.

Only time I ever heard the word was for a box or a job description. Also to describe the cardboard boxing dvd and bluray display stands in best buy, Walmart etc.

Thank you! I wasn't trying to be a dick, I just assumed that since this was a forum where we all whined about fictional TV characters, it was common knowledge.

Maybe, but I can understand why it would be a problem for a person in a relationship with him. Under the terms of psychology, I'm curious, what kind of effects does this have on a personality? The sex drive underlies almost everything a person does in some way or another. I'm not trying to be a contrarian or anything, from a scientific point of view, I'm genuinely curious.

I know quite a few Aspies who are like that.
I've heard it's more commonplace among people with Aspergers. Not myself though. Part of me kind of perversely thinks it'd have certain advantages though.

I naively assumed that among TV fans, it was common knowledge, like how a Star Trek fan is called a "Trekkie," etc.

Leonard had been making out with another girl while engaged to Penny. During the cold open, which turned out to be a dream, Sheldon says that turnabout is fair play and Penny should fool around with another guy to make things even, and points out that he's still single. Penny considers this for a moment, then shoves her tongue down Sheldon's throat. Sheldon reaches out to being using his hands for...
And then Leonard wakes up screaming.

I wonder what that's like for a gay actor? I mean, from the other side, I don't know if I could do that without feeling super-uncomfortable.

Yes, but that's probably because you are a normal, well-adjusted person who gets laid once in a while. Those of use who roam around the Internet lacking anything better to do come across these things.
