EDIT: Blue-Ray said No Before to Porn, But Now May Actually be Released

http://www.heise.de/english/newsticker/news/83552

AVN: Will Blu-ray walk into the anti-porn trap?
Since January 10 the AVN Adult Entertainment Expo, the largest trade fair of the United States' pornography industry, has been taking place at the Sands Expo and Convention Center in Las Vegas right next to the consumer-electronics trade fair CES. Despite the Blu-ray Disc Association having, on account of current forecasts for player sales, only recently at the CES declared itself the winner in the battle to succeed the DVD the decisive thrust in the fight to the death between Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD may yet for all that come from the AVN. There Joone, founder of the company Digital Playground and director of extremely popular HD porn movies, declared that his company would from next week on be publishing movies on HD DVD on a regular basis.

This is a U-turn for Joone, who at last year's AVN event had declared his support for the Blu-ray Disc format. Asked about his change of attitude by heise online the director responded: "Sony wants me to publish my films on HD DVD." He then went on to explain that he had in fact wanted to publish his movies on Blu-ray Disc, but that all Blu-ray Disc copying facilities in the United States had refused to cooperate. The companies had unanimously declared that Sony had threatened to withdraw their Blu-ray licenses should they stoop to making HD copies of pornographic films, Joone said. Even though he would have liked to supply with his movies the predominantly male group of Playstation 3 players he had been forced by events, he declared, to switch to HD DVD. The game console has the ability to play Blu-ray Discs built into it. The director said he was puzzled by Sony's attitude, which, he noted, had also turned out to be counterproductive in the case of Betamax.

As a consequence Digital Playground now intends to release HD DVD products at a rapid rate: Thus between now and the first week of February the company, with "Island Fever 3," "Pirates," "Teen America" and "Island Fever 4," will launch onto the US market as many as four titles. Thereafter up to the end of the year the company will aim to release four HD-DVD titles a month. While "Island Fever 3" and "Pirates" are combined discs with an HD-DVD and a DVD side to them, "Teen America" and "Island Fever 4" are pure HD DVDs. Each disc will probably cost 5 US dollars more than its DVD counterpart.

The movie "Island Fever 3," which was shot on Tahiti and Bora Bora, has already been seen to run flawlessly as a WMV HD-DVD; despite a playing time of 3 hours and 20 minutes its successor, which as DVD is two-disc-edition material, is said to fit on a single HD DVD without any loss of quality. The fairly sumptuously produced "Pirates" has even received an award as the most commercially successful porn DVD of 2006. For more than a year the work, of which a G-rated version was released later, managed to hold on to a prominent position in the US porn DVD charts.

Not knowing the stats on the sales of porn dvds, but I read somewhere that the winner of the format war would be decided on which one the porn industry, being a multi-billion dollar industry that it is, would support.

Sure, porn is a multi-billion dollar industry, but how much of that money is made through DVD sales?

Here you go:

http://www.vinpowerdigital.com/NewsA...f/OTO_June.pdf

" But Adult Video News (AVN), trade magazine for the adult video industry, recently released its first-ever statistical look at the market. It pegged 2005 adult video sales and rentals in the US at $4.24 billion. The Video Software Dealers Association, trade association for home video sales and rentals – not including adult – said US consumers spent $24.3 billion buying and renting DVDs and VHS cassettes. That would mean adult sales and rentals in the US represented 14.9% of all US home video sales and rentals in 2005."

Thanks for the info. That is definitely a pretty impressive amount of money. Seems kind of stupid for Blu-ray not to want their business, but I guess that is par for the course for them (Re: Porn).

Well, the local shop I bought most of my DVD's from in the last 3 years had a huge adult selection. Every Friday when they would make the following week's releases available, many regulars came in and bought a stack of adult discs. Weekly. It also seems like DVDEmpire does a nice amount of business in adult discs.

I'm not sure it's enough to sway the war one way or another, but I think there are still plenty of people out there who prefer their porn to have higher quality video, and not just free snippets of the action. Plus there's that multi-angle feature.

Wow, HD-DVD just got way better news than anything announced at CES. Absolutely shocking that Sony would be so dumb. I am sure HD-DVD welcomed the porn industry in with arms spread wide. This is in my opionion, whether you buy or hate or ignore the adult film industry, a huge development.

I work at a video store in my spare time from my other job, and i can tell ya that at least half of our business is porn. Our very small store spends $300 a week on porn and that's not enough.

Anyways, this is a big victory for HD. I'm tempted to come up with a Blu-ray sexual innuendo joke....

Wow, I didn't realize Blu-Ray had officially won the format war.
Guess I will throw out my HD-DVD player and stop buying and renting discs now

I've seen that quote all over the place and it just pisses me off. Arrogant bastards. I find it funny that BR took the ass kicking that they did last year and have the balls to say that in the 2nd week of January that they have won the war. Sounds kinda like George Bush a few years back on that aircraft carrier.

That's the type of thing that helps me buy that extra HD-DVD disc.

For a company that's made several monumentally stupid decisions as of late, this will come to be known as the final shovel of dirt on the BluRay format.

Sweet mother of fuck, it's like they are trying to kill their stock price on purpose.

Interesting, considering these are some UMD titles:

(Also, Play-Asia sells Japanese adult UMDs).

Adult Entertainment is a beast to say the least. I think the internet has allowed the porn industry to make more money than ever without taking away from home video sales. You would think that after Sony has been qouted time and time again stating that they are avoiding the VHS/Betamax mistakes, they would go back and do this again.

My understanding is that Digital Underground currently has around 150 titles shot in HD by the way.

Bus,

I think some US websites sell them as well. Sony wanted UMD to be an open standard I believe so they really have no say on the content it seems. A few searches brings up the topic.

Why PSP UMD Porn is a Red Herring

Who would've guessed the biggest news from CES came from AVN instead.

I agree. If I was Toshiba I would subsidize software for these companies asap and help them get rolling. This is their trump card now.

Oh, I picked my words, I was trying to get my point across while still making a joke. I knew this crowd would appreciate the wording - hell I know its roughly what everyone else was thinking.

You know these guys who got shunned by Blu-Ray are now going to go out of their way to destroy Blu-Ray and crown HD-DVD king. This should at the very least really spice up the format war. Hell, Toshiba should take out carefully placed ads embracing the adult industry. I know they will not, but I mean they should really take this gift they have been given and run with it.

Crap, you beat me to it (suggesting Toshiba take advantage):

99% of porn is shot on video so I don't see much benefit of it being on HD formats.

I found this pic in the highdefdigest article:

from Digital Playground's website:
DIGITAL PLAYGROUND TO DEBUT PIRATES II TEASER AT AEE
01/08/2007

Digital Playground will debut the first teaser for Pirates II at AVN's Adult Entertainment Expo in Las Vegas on Wednesday, January 10th. Directed by DP's multi-award winning director, Joone, Pirates II will feature an all-star cast and state of the art animation, special effects and graphics. Company president, Samantha Lewis is very pleased, "Pirates has been a phenomenal success and the sequel will be even stronger. I am very excited to show off the teaser that Joone has created. It will run in the Digital Playground booth, space # 7012, on all of AEE's entrance units and a special HD-DVD version will play in the press room."

There are more and more big selling titles (usually the Vivid and Digital Playground stuff) that were shot in HD. More porn outfits are moving to HD since the cameras are relatively cheap now.
