Re: The Fourth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge *Discussion Thread* May 1-31, 2013

Fortunately, I had some library DVDs with me, so I saw Sweeny Todd (excellent), Snow White and the Huntsman (rubbish), Stardust (sadly just slightly less good than I remembered - but still pretty...

Re: The Fourth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge *Discussion Thread* May 1-31, 2013

Not going to be able to update anything (probably) until early June, because I'm stuck in a hotel that wants to charge nearly $20 for wireless access. So, no Internet. Also, no Amazon, which is going...

Re: The Fourth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge *Discussion Thread* May 1-31, 2013

I wonder if they suffered from the anti-cliffhanger problem: guessing they'd get canceled, they wrapped things up a little too well...?

Re: The Fourth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge *Discussion Thread* May 1-31, 2013

:) The doubly-baffling thing is that it's often laughable even if you only use it to check e-mail!

One of the good things about Chuck (and there were many and more) is that it seemed a little...

Re: The Fourth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge *Discussion Thread* May 1-31, 2013

It's odd, isn't it?! It's a fairly good, clean plot - even if there are lapses - and well executed by the whole cast.

Sounds like I ought to see that at some time... I don't mind the flying...

Re: The Fourth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge *Discussion Thread* May 1-31, 2013

There are a few rather baffling logical lapses in the Tom Cruise film adaptation of Mission: Impossible (1996), over-and-above the slightly laughable use of improbable e-mail addresses and foolishly...

Re: The Fourth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge *Discussion Thread* May 1-31, 2013

Sliding Doors is rather good. I liked the intermingling plotlines almost as much as I was thoroughly sad at the ending (but pleased at the foreshadowed post-ending). It did occur to me when I looked...

Re: The Fourth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge *Discussion Thread* May 1-31, 2013

We have a 14:9 (yes, 14) tiny, tiny TV. So I tend not to miss it!

Also - along with spelling out "in-jokes" to the n-th degree - something of a lost art. Thankfully, this is less likely to be...

Re: The Fourth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge *Discussion Thread* May 1-31, 2013

Some of the best film moments for me are those reference bits that are entirely subtle and/or completely in the background. Bits that you don't notice the first time around, but when you watch it for...

Re: The Fourth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge *Discussion Thread* May 1-31, 2013

I know I've got Rocky Horror Picture Show and Shock Treatment somewhere in my room, but couldn't find them in time for my challenge... :(

Re: The Fourth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge *Discussion Thread* May 1-31, 2013

I can understand that opinion, certainly. What I find slightly odd is that some people seem surprised that a film featuring the same characters from an earlier TV/film series should share similar...

Oh. The perils of a tiny TV, I suppose.

Then that makes... not very much more sense!

Re: The Fourth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge *Discussion Thread* May 1-31, 2013

I thought that I'd seen parts of My Super Ex-Girlfriend on TV at some point, but did not think I'd seen it all... until yesterday, when I remembered almost every scene! It's not a great film, but it...

Re: The Fourth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge *Discussion Thread* May 1-31, 2013

MILD SPOILERS FOLLOW

This month gave me an excuse to watch the newest Bond film - Skyfall - which was good, because I was unable to see it at the cinema, making it the first Bond I've missed...

Re: The Fourth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge *Discussion Thread* May 1-31, 2013

Saw Star Trek: Into Darkness at the cinema, a week after re-watching the 2009 Star Trek at a friends' house, so I thought I ought to watch The Motion Picture and Wrath of Khan first. Unfortunately, I...

Re: The Fourth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge *Discussion Thread* May 1-31, 2013

It's interesting to consider which of those factors would have been (considered) more important to audiences - the purported familiarity of the story or the idea that you'd feel you ought to be...

Re: The Fourth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge *Discussion Thread* May 1-31, 2013

I first saw it about five years ago, but enjoyed it a lot. The odd-ness of it all seemed to have allowed it to remain relatively timeless (clothes & hair, etc., aside).

Re: The Fourth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge *Discussion Thread* May 1-31, 2013

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes was great (obviously), with some particularly good lines. My favourites include: "What kind of dinner party is this?!" and "See - they told me you were stupid!" The trailer...

Re: The Fourth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge *Discussion Thread* May 1-31, 2013

If I can find it, I will. :) The library doesn't have it, so I'll have to have a minor excavation and see if it turns up in my room...

(I think I have the Prince and the Showgirl, too, but if I do...

Re: The Fourth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge *Discussion Thread* May 1-31, 2013

;) I'm unsurprised to not be in the majority with that opinion!

In my defence (not that I need one! :p) I'll offer these points: I saw (2005) first*; and, I prefer a lot of singing (or a great...

Re: The Fourth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge *Discussion Thread* May 1-31, 2013

Also, the Outtakes are hilarious! Nathan Lane can barely keep a straight face at any point, and his laughter is infectious. Better yet is the multiple takes of the same scene, until: "Take 14".....

Re: The Fourth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge *Discussion Thread* May 1-31, 2013

Be sure to watch the trailer, if you can. It's VERY odd! Unless I miss my guess, the first shot is of the writer... now, fair enough, the writer was Arthur Miller, but still: how many film trailers...

Re: The Fourth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge *Discussion Thread* May 1-31, 2013

I only noticed it turn up on Amazon towards the end of last month, and was under the impression that it was actually terrifying, so I didn't schedule it for late at night (just in case ;)) and missed...

Re: The Fourth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge *Discussion Thread* May 1-31, 2013

Watching the re-adaptation of The Producers (2005), and I'll say it: it's miles better than the original. I've seen it before, but on an international flight, so it wasn't in the best circumstances....

Re: The Fourth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge *Discussion Thread* May 1-31, 2013

Finished up almost all of the bonus features this morning, and I'm still incredibly impressed with the effort Disney put into their releases. Occasionally there'll be things I know are missing, and...
