I'm willing to bet it has more to do with the subject matter of the film than the length of the performance. There have been performances with 5 minutes of screen time that have been nominated.

Finished watching part 2 of the extended director's cut yesterday and this has become my number 1 film of 2014. Another excellent film by one of the greatest living directors.

Saw part 1 of the director's cut yesterday (fuck you A Christmas Story) and at this point it might be the best film of the year for me, but that will depend on how I feel after watching part 2.
