It's complicated. By the late '20s it is in a long, slow decline. Then in '35, Herriman was allowed to do color pages, and he perks up again. But he died in '44, so it was only a few years before...

Amazon just gave me the shipping notice for the final volume of Krazy Kat. Fantagraphics has been working on that series since 2000. It took them twelve years to finish it.
