Jesus, Hammett's solos suck. They pretty much bring down the whole album. Did Kirk totally phone these in because he was pissed about James and Lars doing all the writing?

I'll probably do the same soon.
I finally started listening to the CD in the car today after the long holiday break. It definitely sounds better than DM, but the kick is so boomy and forward in the mix. I generally can leave my bass and subwoofer controls in the same place for 95% of metal from the last 10 years. If anything I usually need to give the bass control a bump. With this record I have to reduce it. Lars really has a Napoleon complex doesn't he?
I would have liked for the guitars to sound a little bigger and forward in the mix as well.

Re: METALLICA: "HARDWIRED…TO SELF-DESTRUCT" 2CD/3CD Deluxe 11/18/16
I made it halfway through track 2 before I had to shit.
It's really bad. "St. Anger" has not improved with time. Some decent parts to songs, but overall, it's terrible. And the track "Purify" is just ball blisteringly abysmal.
What did you think?
I'll probably do the same soon.

Fuck this album. Besides Hammett's garbage-grade solos, they have one of the best thrash bass player in Trujillo, and they fucking bury him in the mix, practically taking him out of the album. Assholes.

But yeah it's pretty bad. I mentioned before the kicks are taking up so much real estate in the low end it would be impossible to get a nice present bass in the mix. When are they going to learn hearing the bass makes them sound better? See the black album and even Garage Days.

Indeed ^
That sucks, though, if he's slumming it. I remember when they said that Roberto would be an equal member, as in 25% shareholder, as opposed to work-for-hire like Newsted was.

I mean in the current musical landscape I can't blame these guys for taking a paycheck over artistic freedom. I'm guessing Trujillo's agreement with the band keeps him on a tight leash since Newsted's side stuff seemed to be a sore spot before he left. It's just a bummer we don't get to hear more of what Trujillo can do now.
On a smaller scale the same thing happened with Megadeth's current drummer Dirk Verbeuren (ex-Soilwork). The guy is an absolute monster and one of my favorite drummers. He is so overqualified for Megadeth it's not even funny. But Soilwork, even with 10 studio albums and two decades under their belt, still have to play small clubs when they tour and take 3 bands out with them. At least the guy from Lamb of God felt secure enough in his current position to turn down Mustaine. It just sucks Soilwork lost such an integral piece of their sound for the last 12 years just so Mustaine could add him to his long list of revolving door hired guns.

I'm not faulting Trujillo at all - it's whoever made the decision to diminish his presence that needs an ass-whipping. Why even hire him?
Hammett's problem seems to be his own - I doubt anyone asked him to play shitty, uninspired solos.

Re: METALLICA: "HARDWIRED…TO SELF-DESTRUCT" 2CD/3CD Deluxe 11/18/16
So Trijillo only has credit on one song which was co-written with Hetfield & Ulrich. On the other hand, Hammett has zero.

I don't disagree with you but I don't think Lars or James give a rat's ass about underutilizing Trujillo. They got someone they know can handle their back catalog live which is really the most important thing for them I think.
That one credit is almost certainly for the bass intro on "ManUNkind". So in that sense Trujillo didn't even contribute to the structure or meat of the song. He probably was just noodling around in the jam room and they decided to use it as the start of a song.

I guess there's a clause that states Hetfield/Ulrich write ALL songs and it's non-negotiable. Not even Hammett - granted, he's not technically an original member, but it's a technicality.
BTW, Megadeth's newest album is terrific. They bounced back after that Supercollider nonsense.

I would rank the recent big 4 releases like this:
1. Megadeth - Dystopia
2. Anthrax - For All Kings
3. Metallica - Hardwired...
4. Slayer - Repentless
Metallica and Slayer are basically a tie for me but I dinged Slayer for poor grammar in the album title.

As an antithesis to Metallica's irreverence, Death Angel is a thrash band that seems to be getting better with age.
This is what's it's like to still have the fire after 30 years.

I'm 46, I still play in bands and participate in the NYC punk/hardcore/metal scene.

Slop, thanks for the recommendation. I honestly don't listen to a lot of metal, but this was excellent. I just picked up the deluxe edition of "The Evil Divide". I love it when I get introduced to a new band!
