Prince - Love Symbol album question
I'm talking about album where the title is just the symbol. You guys know what I'm talking about right?
I bought a used CD of the album a couple of years ago and it contained an edited version of Sexy MF with all the F words bleeped out. Is this the only version of the album? Was there a clean version and a dirty version?

Yeah, the O+> album was sold both in a censored and uncensored versions. Considering songs like "Sexy MF" you gotta imagine that he needed to have broader sales with the cleaner language.
It was his first album, I believe, after the much-ballyhooed $100 million dollar contract with Warners, and the beginning of a long and embarassing public dispute over his right to release unlimited music (not to mention the whole "Slave" thing, the name change, the crappy side projects with the NPG).
If it weren't for GOLD and COME, I would have quit being a fan a long, long, time ago.
But I digress: See my above answer to your question.

I remember getting a clean version of that album when it was released because I was 16 and not yet legal to buy the unedited version, even though I heard much worse each day in High School than that album could produce to scar me. I think Prince intended it as an opera of sorts, but it made little sense in that regard.

I actually liked the censored version because it had him doing that little cry of his in place of "fucker". It was funnier.

Say what you want about the album as a whole but "My Name Is Prince" and "7" are two bad ass songs. I never get tired of them. Damn...just mentioning them makes me want to hear them right now.

One of my favorite Prince albums. Morning Papers, God Created Woman, The Continental, and such a bad ass guitar solo on 3 Chains of Gold. I caught a concert for this Tour in the Chicago Theater way back in the day.

I like "Sexy MF," "The Flow," "7" and even "My Name Is Prince." However, "3 Chains Of Gold" just about ruins the album, and most of the rap sinks the otherwise "just okay" songs.
The video movie was pretty poor, too.

I like this album so much I went out and bought the gold-covered special edition.
Trouble is, I don't care for the whole album. Prince went through a phase where he tried his hand at epic/Broadway/operatic pieces (see Kamasutra), and I don't think he was very good at it at all. "Three Chains O' Gold" is my least favorite song on the album, and to be honest, I usually skip it.

Re: Prince - Love Symbol album question
The reason I bought it was because it had the gold embosed jewel case that I believe was limited to the first printing, but I was bummed that it was the censored version.

After reading your post closely you said Jewel case that was gold. The on thing I know of that was like that was the gold jewel case for the Single Gold , which does have the symbol on the cover. but it has nothing to do with the album you speak up. Post pics.

I think he's just talking about the fact that the "love symbol" was printed directly on the front of the jewel case instead of on the insert inside.

Re: Prince - Love Symbol album question
I have always loved the 89-94 years of Prince the best. Sure, I think his 80's songs are the classics and probably the best. But the look and style, the whole package Prince presented along with some cool production of this era always appealed to me more. I wish Prince would release a video collection, there was some awesome videos in this era as well.

I thought Diamonds and Pearls was a pretty good album. I remember buying it when I was 15 and loved the holographic cover . I also associate the title track with Christmas/the holidays, because that was when it was popular and was about giving gifts of love. I know it's NOT a holiday tune, but still.

What I bought was the second image. Only censored. I was under the belief that only early pressings had the gold symbol printed directly on to the plastic jewel case, but I imagine it's not that rare or valuable.

Well as you can see from the pictures. The gold box one was actually limited special edition and it's worth like $40. Now I know what you meant I probably still have the case around here somewhere. I still have the gold box version for sure. I pretty much had everything he put out up till late 90's.
