I'm hoping this set drops at least $50 before release. I desperately want Mellon Collie, but $150 for 6 discs (5 CD+1 DVD) is silly.

I think someone is forgetting the "Decoupage kit for creating your own scenes from the Mellon Collie universe."

Re: Smashing Pumpkins to reissue classic albums

Yeah, that's pretty ridiculous, although it's probably my most anticipated SP re-release. I can see spending $30 to $40 for the expanded Gish, Siamese Dream and even Pisces, but anything over $60 is too rich for my blood. I'll wait this one out for now.

Re: Smashing Pumpkins to reissue classic albums

I was on the fence about this one when the reissue program was announced - I loved it at the time but it hasn't aged well. However, a lot of the b-sides and outtakes from this era are fantastic so I still thought I could get some value out of it. I'm beyond disappointed that he's only offering the extra material in a $130+ box with extra stuff that we don't really need. That should have been available as an option but there should also be a box to match the first three for those of us who want the music but don't want to decoupage our own album art or read two books worth of Billy's insane ramblings.

There also is no good reason to expand the vinyl to 4 LPs.

Greed won out in putting the set together and I'm out.

If I were to venture a guess, they are going to change the track order from the original LP and have it match the CDs so that it will have 28 songs in total with each record sporting 7 songs. The original release was 3 LPs with 30 songs that were in a different order from the CD/cassette IIRC.

These massive deluxe reissues at insane prices are getting to be too much. Someone wake me up when we get a reasonably priced deluxe edition of Adore.

Initially I thought I'd get these, but there's just too much stuff I don't want included with them. A bonus cd and updated booklet is all need for anniversary/expanded releases. (Bleach 20th for example)

Re: Smashing Pumpkins to reissue classic albums

Damn, I am still waiting on a decent price for Pisces Iscariot. No way would I pay that much for Melon Collie though I will admit it looks really fucking awesome.

I was able to get Gish and Siamese Dream for under $23 bucks. What happened to that pricing?

Re: Smashing Pumpkins to reissue classic albums

so do we get a single disc of bonus tracks with the standard edition? or just a remaster of the original 2-disc album?

Re: Smashing Pumpkins to reissue classic albums

As with previous reissues, Amazon only shows two options: the standard (remastered) edition with no bonus tracks and the fancy-pants edition. It's just that this one overkills with the extras and the physical packaging is why it costs so much more than the others. I might just opt for the MP3 version this time around.

I'm surprised that I don't see the track "Infinite Sadness" on there (unless I missed it). It's the closing track on the 3LP version.

It's been 95% confirmed that they're going with the original CD track list for the vinyl - so why does taking two (short) songs off require adding a whole fourth LP? 28 songs puts 5 songs on four sides and 4 songs on the other two sides, and it can be balanced out to about 20 minutes a side. Completely acceptable. (The 'Gish' remaster has even longer sides and sounds phenomenal.)

Expanding 'Pisces Iscariot' to a double made sense - each side was 27+ on the original which is a bit long. (You want to stay around 22 minutes for optimal sound quality.) This is just silly.

Because 4 LPs are better than 3. Duh! Personally, I think it would be cool if they did 3 LPs with the 28 tracks and a 4th with the 2 bonus tracks from the first set on side A and etching on side b. I got a deluxe set of an album from another band this summer with etching on the 4th side and it is super sweet.

Re: Smashing Pumpkins to reissue classic albums

I thought it would've actually been cool if they included the original Mellon Collie tracklisting with Tonite Reprise, Ugly and Medillia of The Grey Skies inserted into the track order.

Re: Smashing Pumpkins to reissue classic albums

Honestly, out of all the re-issues the thing I'm looking forward too most is the Rick Rubin produced version of "Let Me Give The World To You" and the Adore era version of "Cash Car Star".

Going off topic, but who was that?
I have an EITS album that has etching on the 4th side. It's purdy.

Back on topic, of all the Smashing Pumpkins re-issues, Mellon Collie is the only one I'd seriously consider buying. But if the entire tracklist ends up on Spotify (like the others did), then it'll be easier to keep my money.

The set I got was black vinyl though. You can't see it in that picture, but the etchings are of 5 different animals.

Ah yes. I remember you (or someone) posting about that set in one of the "recently purchased" threads. Looks sweet.

It is really sweet if you like the band (they are probably my favorite). One of the coolest things about the set is that every band member signed something different on each set and it was only $40. They self released the album and only marked the set up $5 over cost.

Re: Smashing Pumpkins to reissue classic albums

As part of the continuing series of reissues of THE SMASHING PUMPKINS’ acclaimed catalog via Virgin/UMe, the iconic alternative band is set to release four separate versions, all fully remastered, of their platinum-selling 1996 box set THE AEROPLANE FLIES HIGH: 6-CD +1 DVD; 5-LPs and Deluxe Digital and Standard Digital editions. The CD/DVD, 5-LP version and digital configurations will be released July 23.

The original THE AEROPLANE FLIES HIGH was a five-disc box set that featured expanded versions of singles from their acclaimed 1995 double album MELLON COLLIE & THE INFINITE SADNESS, including “Bullet With Butterfly Wings,” “1979,” “Zero” “Tonight, Tonight” and “Thirty-Three.” MELLON COLLIE achieved Diamond certification by the RIAA for sales of 10,000,000 discs and digital equivalent per disc (5 million copies of the double album).

These new limited edition box sets of THE AEROPLANE FLIES HIGH feature the original 33 track version—remastered by Bob Ludwig—and expanded to 104 tracks (90 audio and 14 audio-visual) encompassing unreleased demos, alternative versions and live recordings. In addition to expanded versions of Aeroplane’s original 5 discs, a 6th disc contains live recordings from the 1996 Mellon Collie tour, while the DVD content is taken from a July, 4 1997, performance in Belfort, France. Included is a 46-page book with liner notes written by David Wild, plus extensive track-by-track notes by The Smashing Pumpkins founder-singer-songwriter-guitarist Billy Corgan—for the original release’s 33 tracks. The box set has unique packaging with embossed foil wrap & twinkle stock for jackets. To view the full tracklisting of each box set and DVD, go here: http://www.smashingpumpkins.com/albu...-high-reissue/

As David Wild writes, “The Aeroplane Flies High is a trip, and perhaps fittingly for Billy Corgan, it was an exciting, exhausting and scary one that reveals a lot about the Smashing Pumpkins at this point in their musical journey.”

Notes Corgan in the 46-page book: “What I like about The Aeroplane Flies High is that it’s almost the existential backwater of the Mellon Collie album,” Corgan says today. “Listening to the music gathered here is a little bit like seeing what goes on behind the walls of Disneyland. I’ve always been fascinated with places that are very well constructed, and finding out what’s really going on just over the fence. You look over that gate and notice that things on the other side are not well painted—or maybe you spot that guy dressed as some character sneaking a smoke on his break. At least for me, the behind the scenes feel heard on The Aeroplane Flies High represents something revealing not found on the main album. In retrospect, it’s a nice document of how we arrived at the apex of Mellon Collie—and also what standing on that apex did to us personally.”

The Aeroplane Flies High follows 2011’s acclaimed reissues of the band’s groundbreaking first two albums, Gish (1991) and Siamese Dream (1993), as well as 2012’s PISCES ISCARIOT (1994), the band’s third album, as well as their fourth album, MELLON COLLIE & THE INFINITE SADNESS (1995). ***See press quotes below about the reissue campaign which has the full support and guidance from THE SMASHING PUMPKINS who’ve created one of the most acclaimed bodies of work in musical history, selling over 30 million albums. Theglobal catalog reissue campaign will last through 2013; it will encompass all the band’s albums and B-sides from 1991-2000, with other release dates to be announced. The pivotal group’s many hits defined the alternative music era and continue to resonate on modern rock radio, influencing a whole new generation.

As THE SMASHING PUMPKINS get the fully remastered treatment via these reissues, the band is excited to be moving forward by creating new music. They will soon start recording the follow-up to 2012’s acclaimed album OCEANIA (Martha’s Music/EMI Label Services/Caroline Distribution). It was created by the band—singer/guitarist BILLY CORGAN, guitarist JEFF SCHROEDER, drummer MIKE BYRNE and bassist NICOLE FIORENTINO—at Corgan’s private studio in Chicago as a true album experience for listeners to fully immerse themselves in. Itentered the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart at No.4 and earned the No. 1 spot on the Independent Albums Chart. Marking THE SMASHING PUMPKINS’ 7th studio record, it is “an album within an album,” part of their 44-song work-in-progress TEARGARDEN BY KALEIDYSCOPE. The band launched their 2013 world tour in Mexico this past March and is heading to Europe and Japan for summer dates through August 11.
