Smashing Pumpkins to reissue classic albums

The Smashing Pumpkins will reissue their classic recordings during a three-year program that kicks off in the fall with expanded versions of three albums including their 1993 breakthrough "Siamese Dream," frontman Billy Corgan and EMI Music said Tuesday.

Also due out then will be their 1991 full-length debut "Gish" and the 1994 rarities collection "Pisces Iscariot." An exact release date has not been finalized.

Next year, Corgan and EMI will reissue the 1995 double album "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness," the 1996 five-disc boxed set "The Aeroplane Flies High" and 1998's commercial disappointment "Adore."

In 2013, the 2000 swan songs "Machina/The Machines of God" and "Machina II: The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music" will come out as one package. A hits package, presumably featuring such modern-rock radio staples as "1979," "Cherub Rock" and "Today," will also be released in 2013.

"What makes the deal with EMI groundbreaking is the band has secured the right to all unreleased materials and will be in charge of any additional releases based on our discretion," Corgan, the band's singer/songwriter/guitarist, said in a statement. "In essence, the band has the keys to the warehouse and can release whatever we want, when we want it."

The statement did not detail what bonus material would be included on the reissues.

Corgan is the only original member left in the Pumpkins, which he founded in Chicago in 1988. The band broke up in 2000, and Corgan reactivated the franchise in 2006 with a revolving cast of players and considerably less commercial success. The band is contemplating a tour in August, and plans to release a new album online in September, the statement said.

It was not immediately clear to what extent the former members of the classic lineup -- guitarist James Iha, bassist D'arcy Wretzky and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin -- would be involved in the reissue process.

I'd guess ZERO since Corgan is such a micro-managing douchebag.

This has the potential to be pretty awesome assuming the vault is busted open and considered for bonus material with these.

Thread title is misleading. Seems they are reissuing all of their albums. ;)

Will be nice to own a decent copy of Machina II finally. My bootleg from back then sounds horrible and I never "upgraded".

Fairly priced and remastered well, I'll probably pick up all of these aside from the Aeroplane box and the GH.

Adore was a GREAT album, fuck the haters (no sarcasm, I really do like the album). SP is my favorite band...shame that it's come to this after the heights they reached in the 90's.

The Smashing Pumpkins are to go into the studio next month to record an album.

Titled Oceania, it’s being described as ‘an album within an album’, as part of the 44-track project Teargarden By Kaleidyscope.

The 10 songs on Oceania are to be released online simultaneously later in September. However, next week, the Pumpkins will be making new song Owata available. News on how you can get this as soon as we have it. The band have also done a deal with EMI for the reissuing of their entire back catalogue. This will start in the autumn and continue into 2013.

The original issues sound fine to me. I probably won't be upgrading.

Yeah, they will be brick-walled, loud wars remixes no doubt.

Unless they release some of the acoustic stuff off of 'Siamese Dream' as extras, I won't be interested.

I like Adore alot as well. It is much better than either of the Machina albums.

Is this to fund the chick's method habit?

I DESPISE "Adore". HORRIBLE!! More evil than Pol P-- OK I've never heard it before.

I don't own any SP albums except a greatest hits somewhere. I always dug their music (what I heard, anyhow) so maybe this might be an interesting way to discover them. Worst case scenario, I could always fail at things like Ronnie.

Billy always said that he'd release everything someday.

However, I own Mashed Potatoes and that with Machina II is pretty much everything.

Hopefully this means the final show at the Metro will eventually see the light of day.

Re: Smashing Pumpkins to reissue classic albums

Personally, I always felt Gish and Siamese Dream were the only things they've done to be placed in the "classic" category. They needed a lot of studio production and Butch Vig was integral to those albums. I don't think Flood was the right choice to produce the third album. There some good tunes on Mellon Collie (hate that fucking title) but lots of irritating, screechy crap too. Adore was pretty good I guess. After that? Fuck no, they can keep it.

I remember finding a bootleg recording of the Metro final show, I burned that to 4 disc. I only listened to it once.

I'm hoping Uncle Fester comes through with some good extras, there are tons of demos and whatnot out there. I'd pay to have some of that stuff on an official release.

Praying for a quality version of "Autumn Nocturne".

Perfect from Adore was a great song especially when they performed it live on SNL in 1998 when Cameron Diaz hosted.

Would be cool for me only if they reissue Mellon Collie and Pisces on vinyl - otherwise, I'll keep my original CDs.

They released both of those on vinyl in the early 00s. Mellon Collie was a 3 LP set w/ 2 additional tracks and re-ordered tracklist and Pisces was translucent green. I ended up selling both for about $170 total back in 03.

This is what I really want. They have enough unreleased material to do at least 3 disk sets of each record. Though I feel like if you want a lot of SP stuff, you can easily get it. They released that 100+ track rarities compilation a few years back on a bunch of different websites and itunes (I think I got if for like $10).
