Old CD's now available on DVD...
I was at the store and noticed that there is a large assortment of music now available on DVD. I have never heard music that was actually mastered for a dolby 5.1 environment other than music on movies.
I can understand how they would master the album against the different channels. I could also see how new albums could be recorded to take advantage of this.
I saw that 'American Beauty' by the Grateful Dead was released on DVD.
My question is this: Will it really sound that much better on DVD than CD when both are played through the same DVD player and sound system?

There are a few different formats...DVD-Audio, SACD, DD5.1 and DTS.
Every DVD-Audio or DTS disc I own sounds awesome. They are encoded at a much higher bit-rate than normal CDs are so they sound much better.
The only drawback is occasionally on some discs you get a surround sound nut in the studio mixing the tracks too aggressively and they sound a bit unbalanced.
If you have the equipment to play them and are into music heavy it is the way to go IMO.
